How much protection do YOU think the vaccine (AZ) gives you?

Just that really! And when does it start working?

OP posts:
Dementedswan · 25/03/2021 14:12

Give that a try please 🤣

knittingaddict · 25/03/2021 15:37

How the hell would I know and why does my opinion matter one iota. I've had the AZ jab and that makes me happy. Does that help?

Mutter, mutter, mutter.

Dementedswan · 25/03/2021 18:37

@knittingaddict because some people are interested in how efficacy is calculated etc and also because they have had the AZ jab and are wondering how protected they are?

Not dissing the jab, everyone is grateful for it, but people understandably are curious.

littlewhitestar · 25/03/2021 21:06

Actually @Dementedswan, forget odds, I think the easiest way to explain efficacy is:

If a vaccine has 95% efficacy, that means, in the clinical trial the risk for the vaccinated group was 5% of the risk for the unvaccinated group.

This video might help but he uses a different equation to calculate efficacy:

VE = 1 - x/y
where x = risk for the vaccinated group
y = risk for the unvaccinated group

Whereas I used:
VE = y-x
y

They are the same equation, just written differently.

Oops, forgot the video:

So 76% is not great compare to Pfizer etc Sad

anyoldtime · 25/03/2021 22:33

I’d prefer 95% Pfizer.

littlewhitestar · 25/03/2021 22:35

@Dementedswan

Well 76% is less than 95% Grin

It's more complicated than just vaccine efficacy though. It doesn't take into account how effective the vaccine is at preventing serious disease, just the risk of actually getting it. I would concentrate more on data saying that AZ is 100% effective in preventing serious disease.

RebeccaCloud9 · 25/03/2021 22:35

I had the AZ vaccine just over 3 weeks ago. I came down with covid just under 3 weeks ago.

But, my dh didn't have the jab and is much more poorly than me, just isn't getting better. I normally get more poorly than him if we get something at the same time.

RebeccaCloud9 · 25/03/2021 22:36

Argh no, came down with covid just under a week ago! So nearly 3 weeks after the jab.

anyoldtime · 25/03/2021 22:39

What are your symptoms RebeccaCloud9 having had the vaccine?

BoomTastic1 · 25/03/2021 22:52

100% protection against death and severe covid. That's all I care about.

RebeccaCloud9 · 25/03/2021 23:02

@anyoldtime first tiredness, then vomiting, then sinuses and aches and pains, then upset tummy. Smell and taste went for a bit but back now.

changi · 25/03/2021 23:06

This is quite an interesting read. It makes the point that comparing vaccine efficacy is not possible unless the tests are head to head.

I haven't had a high temp the whole time. Dh has had a high temp plus chills, not able to maintain the right temp.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2021 23:15

I don't care about catching Covid now I've been vaccinated 🤷‍♀️

I now won't die for DEFINITE (no one has)

I have an incredibly small chance of being hospitalised or having serious affects

I will get possibly very slightly ill - that's fine, I've not been ill for 15 months, not even a sniffle - so about time I caught something again and gave my immune system something to do

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 25/03/2021 23:24

Much like the influenza vaccines and all of the others that are available, considerably more than not having one.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/03/2021 01:55

A bit. Two people in my bubble have had one or two doses do they are protecting me. Presumably some of the kids teachers have had some.
Personally, none. I had the Pfizer!

Dementedswan · 26/03/2021 08:10

Ah no @RebeccaCloud9 I hope you and your dh are well soon.

Yes. I think I'll concentrate on that 100% Smile

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/03/2021 08:14

Thank you Smile
