How do you prove you are a carer for vaccine purposes?

Claymorekick · 23/03/2021 20:55

I am a unpaid carer for my dad who is classed as CEV and, according to the government website, I would qualify for a vaccine as I do a lot of the tasks for him that it quotes. However, I don't have any official proof and no idea what proof the vaccination centres require.

Any advice on what I could show to prove I qualify?

I think you have to be registered through your GP as a carer and they will invite you rather than booking online.

Smarshian · 23/03/2021 20:57

You can now book online. You just tick the box.

ChlamydiaSexPond · 23/03/2021 20:58

Just book it via the website and go along to your appointment. They aren't asking for proof (I'm a vaccinator)

Claymorekick · 23/03/2021 21:01

@ChlamydiaSexPond they are where we are - I tried just booking an appointment, turned up and got turned away and told I needed proof but they couldn't really tell me what that was. I have tried my fathers GP but they won't do a letter.

Am at a loss Hmm and I just want to try and protect my dad Sad

That is unfortunate . Tweet your local MP?? Call a carers centre?

partyatthepalace · 23/03/2021 21:09

Ask you GP if they will do you a letter - if not can your GP book you in?

Otherwise I would just rebook yourself go back and stand firm (if you need to - but you probably won’t get asked this time) - they can’t ask for proof if they can’t say what it is - and if you make a fuss they will give it to you rather than have a row.

busface999 · 23/03/2021 21:11

Your Dad's shielding letter then a letter from him setting out what caring tasks you do? Seems ridiculous. I hope your first vaccine when you were turned away didn't go to waste.

Witchlight · 23/03/2021 21:13

Contact your GP. Explain to them the situation and ask that they put a note on your file and email you a copy.

If your Father is CEV, he will have been vaccinated early. Take the Copt of his card and the notes on your record.

The GP notes you are a carer and they can deduce he’s CEV from the date of his vaccine.

Me too..there was no one else waiting to go in and just a very officious security guard who would not budge. So frustrating Confused but I don't want to be put in that position again.

Thank you for all the suggestions- they are really helpful and will see what I can sort out tomorrow.

I care for my parents and have to go in their house so I am going for mine tomorrow ..., I am not putting them at risk ... I mentioned it to the doctors surgery today but I dint think you need proof

ChlamydiaSexPond · 23/03/2021 21:36

Oh wow, really? We've been told not to check, that's the job of the website, and just to crack in and vaccinate! Maybe try booking again at a larger vaccine centre. I work at a vaccine hub that has the capacity to deal with 1000s a day. No time to ask questions Wink

I work across a few locations with informal caters. All the local vaccine centres have accepted a copy of the cared for persons PIP/DLA/Attendance Allowance or shielding letter plus a letter from that person advising that the carer does provide care for them and that they would be left vulnerable if the carer could not continue.

Justonemoreepisode · 23/03/2021 21:46

I’ve heard of quite a few stories of people being turned away without proof so you are not alone.

Dolciedolly · 23/03/2021 21:53

How can you prove if you don't get paid take your limping dad with you ffs

Really? That’s odd because Carers.org specifically says you do not have to provide proof you are a carer. This is because so many people (including young people caring for their parents) are not registered in any way. The criteria is caring for someone who has been either vaccinated or offfered a vaccine - some won’t have taken the offer up of a vaccine themselves but would be vulnerable if their carer became ill, so a carer wouldn’t necessarily have proof of the vaccine date either.
elliejjtiny · 23/03/2021 22:07

I am registered as a carer with my GP and I got a phone call with a date and time for my vaccine. I took my carers allowance letter but I wasn't asked for any proof.

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/03/2021 22:07

The issue is every Tom Dick and Harry will claim they’re a carer to jump the queue so I suppose it makes sense they’re asking for proof and rightly so.

MayDayFightsBack · 23/03/2021 22:09

My DH had his done today and didn't require any proof.

Claymorekick · 23/03/2021 22:14

It looks like it varies a lot then - depends when and where you go.

I do understand that they need some control to ensure that people aren't playing the system but there does need to be some clear guidance on whether proof is needed and if so, what that needs to be Hmm

You don’t need proof. My centre (South midlands) are just relying on people doing the right thing. You can just go ahead and book online.
