How many have tested positive from self administered test?

After reading how difficult it is to do "properly" yourself , and how much less accurate they are as a result , I'm curious how many of you have had positive results from home tests or those done entirely yourself?
Just sent one off and not convinced I did it well enough. Feel so grim. Achey ear, achey head, snotty nose, sore throat cough and warm to touch.

I tested positive with one of the "proper" ones i.e. not the LFT. I would have thought if you messed up the throat (which I find is the trickiest) then the nose part would have been fine.

I'm not 100 percent I got the tonsils but I got below the uvulva (dangly bit) and nearly threw up. Could only manage a few seconds a time so repeated it 4 times. Yuck

But have heard people say the nose swabs go so much higher when done by professional than the home kits advise.

I’ve had 6 PCR tests (coughing asthmatic with kids in nursery/constant colds), all self administered in the car or walk in centre.. I tested positive in December.

I didnt think any test centre did anything different - they are all self administered aren’t they? No-one does it for you. And there’s been millions of cases so yes, clearly people get positives doing it themselves..

Oh, I assumed they were done for you in test centres, not sure why. What were your symptoms?

Yeh I did my own and tested positive. I think I did mine pretty well. Went as far in as I could manage and had quite a few bursts at it as could only manage a couple of seconds at a time as it made me retch.
I also swabbed the kids (3 and 5) who also tested positive from the very pathetic attempts i did on them. I didn’t make them retch or make their nose hurt obviously. Their eyes watered a bit. I asked them to cough before I did it. Don’t know if that helped cough a bit of covid up higher into their throat or not!!

dd1 did. She's 17.

Wasn't her first time. She had done some pcrs and some lf's previously.

XiCi · 23/03/2021 15:21

Yes did my own LFT which was positive, followed up by PCR which I also did myself, again positive.

My 10 year old has done many herself (ONS survey), its not difficult.

ScottishStottie · 23/03/2021 15:24

Op, yes theres the option at test centres to get someone to do it to you. I chose that option when i got tested and was positive last october.

I agree with you that the self tests cant be as accurate. Theres no way i could have physically swabbed either the nose or throat to the extent that was done to me.

raviolidreaming · 23/03/2021 15:25

I got below the uvulva (dangly bit)

Don't the instructions still say to swab the tonsils/ where your tonsils would have been if they've been removed? Why did you put it down your throat?! Sad🤢

ThePricklySheep · 23/03/2021 15:27

My DD and I both got positives from fairly shoddily performed tests. I only managed a quick swipe of the tonsils, followed by a decent nose swab though.

ExpulsoCorona · 23/03/2021 15:29

My 12 year old DD swabbed herself and got a positive both on her LFT and on her PCR (did that one herself too).

Purplewithred · 23/03/2021 15:31

I got positive from a self administered PCR, but I'd had a previous one done by staff and if I hadn't had that I know I wouldn't have gone far enough up my nose - I just wouldn't have realised how far it needed to go.

Whole boxful of lateral flows all -ve, including the ones from the day before and the day after my +ve PCR test. Identical technique from me.

Why were you swabbing there?!
Astressedmumoftwo · 23/03/2021 16:28

I did the tonsils where they were on the diagram (I also googled for a clearer one)

This is the diagram I used 🤷‍♀️ to the side of the uvulva slightly below?

My kids have done loads for school. They only have to do the nose. All tests negative.

ThePricklySheep · 23/03/2021 17:55

Where do you think you swab, @FloraFauna27 ?

The tonsils. Below the uvula sounds like the back of the throat. The tonsils are to the side of it.
JanFebAnyMonth · 23/03/2021 18:14

The "self administered tests are less reliable" is actually referring to the fact that you have to process the sample - the tube, liquid, drops, reading result - not the swabbing.

raviolidreaming · 23/03/2021 18:34

Indeed. If you still have your tonsils, most people can see where they are.
