So....when can I go to Wales?

From the UK - it's not for a holiday, it's to sort out a house belonging to a deceased relative. It's been sitting empty for several months, and we need to go through it before we can get the house clearance people in. Grateful for any advice!

I'm not in wales but not far from the border and my family is on the other side.
In the UK the stay at home rule because stay local on the 29th but there is no stipulation as to how local this is.
Meanwhile 'stay local' in wales is due to be lifted on the 27th March but I don't think there is official confirmation of this yet .
So I intend to travel across the border next week to see my parents outisde but it's a bit different because we're both quite close to the border.

In terms of what you are doing though, I would press on as I'd argue it's essential. My parents have been crossing the border several times for hospital appointments so all legit and have never been stopped. There have however been reports of being people stopped at tourist attraction car parks.

Ps it's always been a bit wishy washy in terms of when can you cross the border because so many people have to do it for work reasons etc and they can't really stop it.
Once in wales, obviously just respect the local rules. Currently there is planned to be a significant opening around 22nd April so might be easier to wait until then.

Thanks for this. I'm a teacher, so hoping to do what I can during the Easter holidays which start for me on Good Friday. So I will look like a tourist unfortunately!

Why do you think you can't go now? Like you said, it's not a holiday. Probate has continued through lockdown so has the property market. We're in England but buying in Wales and have had to go back and forth for viewings a number of times.

Frazzled2207 · 23/03/2021 11:42

I agree you could probably go now but am guessing as a teacher and being some miles away it might not have been easy.
From next week onwards I think it will be easier for you but I think what you're suggesting has been legal the whole time.

I suppose I'm thinking that just because I can doesn't mean I should - trying not to travel unnecessarily.

Thank you - I thought about going for February half term but decided to wait until Easter in the hope that Covid would have been retreating.

Sorry for your loss Flowers

I think if you're taking that approach, you're looking at now or - quite literally - never! Case rates in most of Wales are extremely low, and as I understand it things are looking more positive in hospitals. Current average death rate is 4 a day. I don't know if things will get significantly better in summer, as any further improvements will be balanced by people out mingling, lockdown relaxing etc. With any luck, things will just stay steady. It's something you need to do, and I'd say it makes sense to do it now before tourism opens up and everything is up in the air again.

Hi. I'm in Wales and I think that if the purpose of your visit is to sort the house out, then it would count as 'essential' and therefore shouldn't be a problem. If the purpose of your trip is to visit multiple beauty spots/go mountaineering/have your hair cut etc, then you'd be taking the piss!

Most people in my area are still quite cautious and it feels like we've had quite a hard lockdown with the no travelling rule, so it would be worth explaining to the neighbours if possible. And follow the guidelines once you are here!

wandawombat · 23/03/2021 13:06

Prepping a house for sale is OK. The Welsh Guidance is online & pretty clear, if I remember correctly.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/03/2021 13:08

If you're worried what people might think, you could make a little notice to display in your car window.

Hi, I have a static caravan in wales and our site has told us in writing that we can go for the day fter March 29th, and we can return for overnight stays from April 12th.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/03/2021 13:53

Bluestone Wales where I often go on holiday seem to think it might be the 12th April. But I guess we’ll see!

I think it’s a difficult situation to have restrictions from travelling to different UK nations - especially for those who lives near borders (which isn’t me) - and we should try to avoid this if we can.
