Isolation question

bookworm29x · 22/03/2021 19:10

Genuine question because I can't 100 percent get my head around the rules.

My friends DS was in contact with a postive covid case. He now has to isolate from today.
My friend is saying he only has to isolate for 5 days and she doesn't need to isolate as she's not showing symptoms? However her son has been poorly with heavy cold symptoms over the weekend.
What are the rules please? She wants to meet up socially distanced outside and I still feel the risks are to great.

Isolation is 10 days from the contact with the person who tested positive - presumably that was 5 days ago, so only 5 left?

If he now has cough, temperature or change in taste/smell, he should get a test and whole household should isolate until results come back - but a heavy cold could just mean snot, which isn’t a symptom requiring a test.

minniemoocher · 22/03/2021 19:17

If he's poorly he needs to test, the whole household needs to isolate, if he's positive they need to isolate for 10 days, if he's negative then only the son needs to isolate

ssd · 22/03/2021 19:17

Surely if her son has symptoms he has been tested, and his family is isolating while they await the results?

ssd · 22/03/2021 19:18

Honestly. People are still asking the rules 1 year on.

bookworm29x · 22/03/2021 19:28

I don't think I explained correctly.

Son was poorly over the weekend with bad cold symptoms. Went to school TODAY came with contact with teacher whose test then came back positive so son sent home today to isolate.

Yes I am still asking the rules. I live in a rural area we haven't had any covid positives that I know of in the area.

Son needs to isolate for 10 days, but unless he gets covid symptoms your friend doesn’t need to isolate. She can’t take him out for a walk though.

Racoonworld · 22/03/2021 19:31

Also if you’re at all worried don’t go.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/03/2021 19:32

If he came in contact with the teacher today then it should be 10 days isolation from today.

Unless he’s displaying covid symptoms himself; his mum doesn’t have to isolate.

dementedpixie · 22/03/2021 19:33

Her son needs to isolate
If he has any of the 3 symptoms of covid then he should get tested regardless of contact with the positive case today. He needs to isolate for 10 days, not 5, even if he tests negative.

dementedpixie · 22/03/2021 19:35

If the 'heavy cold' involves a cough, temperature or loss of taste/smell then he needs to get tested and your friend needs to isolate until results are back

Doesn't matter where you live, everyone should be aware if the covid guidelines by now.

Are you sure you've got the timeline correct? The teacher was in school today, became unwell, took a test and tested positive? Or was it a teacher he saw last week who was off work today unwell and has now tested positive?

Just seems a bit quick for the teacher being in school today, although I suppose they could have become unwell rapidly and taken a LFT? I suppose either way, if you're not comfortable to meet up with the child's mum, then don't!

ssd · 22/03/2021 19:45

What bad cold symptoms was her son poorly with at the weekend??

bookworm29x · 22/03/2021 20:05

Sore throat, cough, runny nose, temp. Yes the teacher became unwell and took a test.

Thank you for the answers I will avoid for ten days as I'm clinically vulnerable and very cautious as I only had my jab 3 days ago.

Her child needs a test and to isolate. I would avoid your friend

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/03/2021 20:09

She sent her kid into school today when the kid had a cough and temp on the weekend?

Surely. This is a windup.

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/03/2021 20:27

Temp is one of the three official symptoms, she needs to get him tested.

bookworm29x · 22/03/2021 20:56

No, it's not a windup why does everything have to be a wind up? Hmm

I'm off.

Probably because we are 1 year into this pandemic with information on what to do and when to test literally being shoved down our throats on a daily basis.

People are getting frustrated with the constant questions about when to isolate when this information is quite literally everywhere.
It is hard to understand how people still don't know what to do when we have been doing this for so long.

RoseMartha · 22/03/2021 21:31

My dc had to isolate due to a couple cases at school and they have been in my kids bubbles. School told me they only needed to be off 8 days because you start counting from when the positive person started to show symptoms.

I didnt have to isolate but because my teen has SN and cant be left I had to stay in too. But I could have gone out if I wanted to.
