Great news! Thanks for posting. Hopefully we will follow the same path.

HolmeH · 22/03/2021 10:15

That is really good news, they’ve recently opened back up quite considerably as well!

Haffiana · 22/03/2021 16:07

Interesting to read the comments at the bottom of the article which are mostly antivaxxers of course.

So similar to the antivaxxers on this board, but with changes in who, what and which government is benefiting from the Great Conspiracy. Just shows that all Conspiracy Theorists think along the same rigid paranoid tramlines, whilst imagining themselves special and enlightened, of course...

palacegirl77 · 22/03/2021 16:24

Fingers crossed we follow suit!

doireallyneedaname · 22/03/2021 16:47

@Haffiana Didn’t you know it was a worldwide plan? Grin

It's a slap in the face for all those claiming "We'll just have to live with the virus forever now", although no doubt they'll find SOME reason why Israel is special and we can't do the same here.

A worldwide plan to influence the Israeli elections! Grin Grin

Racoonworld · 22/03/2021 19:50

@notrub I think we’ll have to live with the virus forever. As in it won’t be eradicated and will be around in the UK, but we will accept it and live a normal life, not continuous restrictions. If the vaccines work like they seem to have done in Israel and put cases go that low then great!

Kendodd · 22/03/2021 19:53

I actually think that's still quite a lot considering Israel's small population. I haven't read the article yet but does that number include the Palestinian (unvaccinated) territories?

Kendodd · 22/03/2021 19:56

Perhaps.

I did hear a virologist on the radio a little while ago though who said this might not be true, in that covid won't disappear but it could become like measles, almost gone.

That's not actually scientifically plausible.

Either the virus is as common as a cold, or it's locally (mostly) eradicated. Vaccine or no vaccine, without restrictions like we have now, R will be >1 meaning that the moment community infections develop, they spread until you have mass infection.

The vulnerable are currently protected by 2 things - vaccines, and low probability of exposure - the latter is the more significant of the two - remove that WITH mass infection and a lot will die.

Israel have demonstrated it's possible to use vaccination to drive cases down to a trivial level that can be mopped up with T&T. There is no half-way ground here.

If you haven't bothered to read the article then presumably you don't really give a shit. Hmm
LilyPond2 · 22/03/2021 23:16

@notrub Are you saying that even if the vast majority of the adult population is vaccinated, R will still rise above 1 without restrictions on gatherings? What is your basis for saying that?

PrincessNutNuts · 22/03/2021 23:20

Let's hope the U.K. sees the same result once we get going on second doses and finally finish vaccinating the most vulnerable.

lljkk · 22/03/2021 23:21

Use vaccination to drive cases down to a trivial level that can be mopped up with T&T.

Does that mean that all cough, fever or anosmia in future means you must isolate until you have a negative test result or (10 days) past the likely point of being infectious to others? Including small children with those symptoms... will that be a forever policy?

Not sure how people with COPD, asthma or Cystic Fibrosis will cope.

RedcurrantPuff · 22/03/2021 23:31

Amazing 🤩

RedcurrantPuff · 22/03/2021 23:35

I can see that the R number might not go below one just with vaccines. However if the vaccines mean the effects of the illness are much less serious will it be that big a deal, if it’s not causing hospitalisation, but instead just causing mild disease?

I see SI with symptoms being around for a long long time. A propos of nothing but my own opinion I have to say.

HolmeH · 22/03/2021 23:54

Self isolating maybe but if you’ve been vaccinated, I’m praying close contacts don’t need too! It just doesn’t work in education 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'd like to know that too if poss.
MarieDelaere · 23/03/2021 00:03

^^ As in, I'd like to know what's happening in the Palestinian territories, given that the article doesn't mention them.

LilyPond2 · 23/03/2021 00:06

I believe the issue is that every person who gets the virus provides another opportunity for the virus to mutate. Whilst many mutations may be inconsequential, the nightmare scenario is a mutation that renders the vaccine less effective.

Namechangesensitivemoney · 23/03/2021 09:53

That's wonderful news

Makes me think of how things could be if most people were vaccinated everywhere.
