Has there been an increase in teachers getting Covid since the schools reopened?

I know there are a lot of teachers on MN, are you seeing/have you had a spike?

We've had cases among staff yes.

SpringisSpinning · 21/03/2021 20:23

Wouldn't it take a while longer for this data to work through?
We will know by Easter won't we?

Yes, which was why I thought I would ask teachers on here, who will know what is happening now.

Not in my school but, logically, there must have been nationwide.

I don't think there was ever any pretence that opening schools wouldn't lead to more staff, children and parents testing positive. It's more that the benefits now outweigh the negatives.

sherrystrull · 21/03/2021 20:30

Not yet but plenty of parents and a few children. Our cases in staff have been many but spread throughout the entire of last year.

tilder · 21/03/2021 20:37

More social contact means more opportunity be exposed to covid.

Hence mask wearing and pupil testing in secondary, hand washing, bubbles etc. All to reduce potential for transmission and increase the chance of positive cases being picked up and isolated.

Are they logging cases in school staff for data analysis? If not, it's just anecdotal.

Eaumyword · 21/03/2021 22:07

All year, we hadn't had any staff with Covid. We have 1 member of staff off with it now. 1 parent currently has it too.
Staff test twice a week which is brilliant for controlling spread-our poor member of staff who has it found out via LFT at home and confirmed it with a PCR test. They could have spread it round school had we not been testing.
We internally log all results and log via the government return too, so hopefully they are getting good data.

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/03/2021 07:52

Since half term, our school has had more teachers off than ever. I've got it now.

EnoughnowIthink · 22/03/2021 07:55

Yes, one member of staff down currently. We have 2 year groups out and I suspect we will have significant numbers in one of the year groups over the coming days. I suppose it will take down some teachers too. A case of wait and see.

Scarby9 · 22/03/2021 07:59

I know of four locally that tested positive last week, each with a clear transmission route through from a child in their class.
I don't myself know any non- teachers who have tested positive since Christmas.

Entirely unscientific sample.

It gets very unscientific doesn't it! Our school (staff and kids) all testing negative. Local meat processing plant however...

Why data are so important. Good to know test results are being logged. Shame there won't be a similar teacher dataset before schools went back for BACI (if that term is used for human studies).

Couch2Kitchen · 23/03/2021 23:22

I am a supply teacher and was covering for a teacher and TA who had tested positive just before 8th March.

My nephew's school closed two year groups due to two positive staff cases last week.

My friend's school had 4 staff test positive before 8th March.

All of these were found by LFT, then confirmed by PCR.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 24/03/2021 08:20

A colleague's child's school had to close to all years bar Year 7 on Monday due to a number of positives in staff and students. Now they have completed the track and trace they have 11 groups of around 15 students per group out. Also 6 teachers. We've had 7 positives since returning, so 4 groups out and only 1 member of staff.

None in DH’s secondary school, staff or students. I didn’t think it was in a particularly low rates of covid area but maybe it is.

Cloudyrainsham · 24/03/2021 08:33

Our school of 2000 has had 5 cases, 3 teachers and 2 children.

Icenii · 24/03/2021 17:03

DD been at home since Monday due to bubble burst, and now whole school closed. No idea on numbers or who though. Do schools advertise that?

middleager · 24/03/2021 18:29

It varies, Ice. In some areas the media will pick it up, especially when letters go home. Some schools don't write out to the whole school, some schools telephone, some areas no longer have a weekly paper.

This Twitter account records those that are publicised or that she finds out about via other posters. It's only some of the picture, but if you scroll through her feed you'll see the many news reports and a tally of how many are closed. The real figure will be higher as these are only the ones she knows about.

Two staff cases since January when we started twice-weekly LFD testing.

When inputting my result tonight it asked me for the first time what my profession was (although I've had to say I'm testing due to working in a school since the beginning of our testing), so hopefully they're gathering more data on different jobs and Covid levels.

Hoppscotch · 24/03/2021 19:30

Five staff cases, including me, in the last three weeks.

@Icenii No idea on numbers or who though. Do schools advertise that?

No, parents on the whole won't be told who's tested positive because it's confidential unless you're a close contact. Seating plans determine if your child has been near a case. As staff could unfortunately have been in contact, staff will be told about children and adult cases alike.

As it happens, some of us have taught the same groups (in the same rooms) as each other, despite not actually seeing each other.

Whatamess666 · 24/03/2021 20:07

I'm currently isolating due to positive child in early years. Second isolation since August. I wish my flat was bigger.....

JaninaDuszejko · 24/03/2021 20:18

The number of tests being taken have increased since schools went back so you'd expect to see an increase in cases asmore asymptomatic cases are picked up. The data from 2021 has shown that middle class teachers are not particularly at risk, unlike NMW jobs like care workers and factory workers. The impact on poor children of missing school is much higher. It's about balancing risks, not no risk.

mamaduckbone · 24/03/2021 21:51

We've not had a single case amongst staff or children at my primary school fingers crossed. There have been no cases amongst staff or students at my dc's secondary since they went back the month either, although they did have a handful in the autumn term.
We're in an area where cases are apparently above the national average but I'm not sure how (although an outbreak at the local prison did skew the results a few weeks back)
