How are teachers feeling now?

I've got an awful lot of sympathy for teachers in all this, I feel they've been hung out to dry. But hopefully the vaccine news and cases coming down will make them feel a bit better.
My kids have left school so I've got a general interest. .no bone to grind.

My school got a message yesterday that all staff could get vaccinated at a local doctors surgery that had spares.

Possibly it will help teachers that the government have said vaccination centres can't offer them to the 40-49 group as they will be looking around for who else they can offer spares to, and schools are an obvious choice. Though some will see it as daft to vaccinate teachers in their 20s before non teachers in their 40s.

Though some will see it as daft to vaccinate teachers in their 20s before non teachers in their 40s.

Equally, some will see it as daft at those working from home being vaccinated before people working in close contact with many others.

Either way, it’s scandalous that vaccines are having to be thrown away unused every day, so it’s great if spares can be used and I hope you get one.

As a teacher in their 40s with Psoriasis-I would be very grateful for a spare right now!

Thank you and I hope you get one soon too (this is my new username).

I have asthma and got one last week - not for having asthma but for being 55. It's a relief to my colleagues though.

Fine. Absolutely love having all the children back. Going to work is a really lovely thing again.

Overall I've found that friends who teach primary have found it more manageable, especially upper primary where you are past the nose-wiping stage. Not saying it's been easy by the way before pitchforks appear but the primary teachers I know seem less anxious because the schools are smaller, they are in their own room so have more control over their environment and the parents have been genuinely grateful even if they have been stressed.

Secondary is where the big exodus will come from. The conditions this year have been horrendous (and they were in steady decline pre-Covid) and anyone who was already weighing up the pros and cons of staying or going will have added a lot of blocks on the cons scale.

So many teachers have been shocked by the utterly vile commentary on teachers on social media etc. Ironically the worst offenders will have a MN feed that looks like:

Apr 2020: Get back to work teachers lying in your gardens getting a tan getting paid you should be furlocked its discusting
Feb 2021: Schools should be open its discusting why do teachers think they are so special wanting masks and vaccines they should quit if they r so worried!!!
Mar 2021: My son isn't wearing a mask he isn't a sheep its discusting asking him to wear a mask and be tested covid is a hoax anyway also bill gates is a lizard my auntie's best friend's budgie saw an interview on you tube its all the grate reset
Feb 2023: AIBU my son is doing GCSE this year but he has no maths or science or history or technology teacher just a different supply teacher every week fifteen teachers have quit from his school its discusting why are there no teachers it's an easy job?

RaraRachael · 25/03/2021 14:22

I've relieved to have broken up for Easter holidays today and for the fact that we have never had to send classes home once we've reopened. It's stressful enough teaching kids sitting in rows with no room to gather them at the board or screen. The last thing we needed was to have to drop down a class and everyone end up with even more pupils in their already cramped classrooms.

QuidditchQueen · 25/03/2021 18:43

School’s out for Easter!
We’ve had no cases - time to stop the ridiculous masks snd distancing.

Spot. On.

Yes, I agree with this. I think there's been more respect shown now to the staff then before.

Yep. People can be incredibly stupid.

School’s out for Easter! My KS3 have had half the class missing. Many many children isolating or Covid positive! Keep up with the masks/hand washing/sanitising everyone!
Piggywaspushed · 26/03/2021 14:50

We had the entire sixth form sent home quidditch.

Nice for you but it is not the picture everywhere by any means.

phlebasconsidered · 26/03/2021 15:37

@QuidditchQueen we have 2 reception classes out, and a year 5 too. 4 staff ill. 8 children.

My kids secondary school has a year 9 bubble burst.

Parker231 · 26/03/2021 17:03

At the local primary a year one bubble has burst - five children with Covid, a teacher, TA and some parents.

OverTheRainbow88 · 26/03/2021 18:25

Are the bubbles bursting from LFT which are then confirmed by PCR tests?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/03/2021 18:32

Bully for you. My nephews massive school is 1/2 empty. My school has well over 100 kids isolating.

Fortunately for me, I’m leaving. Had enough of it all.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/03/2021 18:34

And it’s just been announced on the news that the biggest rise this week is in secondary age children.

No masks and no distancing eh? What a great idea😏

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 26/03/2021 19:07

Half of my Y7 classes were sent home yesterday due to a student being sent in with symptoms and then going on to test positive! Others tested positive in turn. Some of Y9 sent home today. Wondering about the likelihood of them actually isolating over the easter holidays. They are in a very deprived area and it's more than likely that at least some of them will be let out on the streets to do what they like and mingle with the public. I'm physically and emotionally knackered but overall I have much preferred being back and teaching face to face.

FrippEnos · 26/03/2021 19:25

If only all schools were like yours.

Then the biggest rise in cases wouldn't be in teenagers.

Try thinking before you post.

Parker231 · 26/03/2021 20:06

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow - it was a stupid idea to not make mask wearing mandatory. No mask = no schooling.
