When will this be allowed? Can't seem to find out from the government website. My ds and dd's birthdays are coming up in the next few months and I would love to meet my parents, even if halfway. We haven't seen them since last summer because they live a couple of hours drive away but can't work out what stage of the easing measures this will come under. Thanks

Surely 29th March you can meet up 6 outdoors / two households can meet. Or meet at the gym !!
Otherwise 17th for meeting indoors.

ohhmygosh · 19/03/2021 12:35

*17th of May

mrsknottschicken · 19/03/2021 12:36

On the 29th of March the 'stay local' advice will be dropped, I think.

Shibees · 19/03/2021 12:36

I’m pretty sure the “stay at home” message will stop from 29th March.

From 12th April you can stay in a self catering property so I assume this means you can travel.

CaCaLand · 19/03/2021 12:37

I think this is currently to be confirmed.

You can meet 6 people or 2 different households from 29 March.

It would be massively unfair to say that only people whose families lived locally could do this with their families.

I think at that time you can stay in self-catering accommodation anywhere in the country, so if travel out of your local area is allowed for paying activities, then it should also be allowed for non-paying activities logically.

Shibees · 19/03/2021 12:38

Copied from the gov website:

Travel
The ‘stay at home’ rule will end on 29 March but many restrictions will remain in place. People should continue to work from home where they can and minimise the number of journeys they make where possible, avoiding travel at the busiest times and routes. Travel abroad will continue to be prohibited, other than for a small number of permitted reasons. Holidays abroad will not be allowed, given it will remain important to manage the risk of imported variants and protect the vaccination programme. The government has launched a new taskforce to review global travel which will report on 12 April.

BronteGirl · 19/03/2021 12:38

29th March is when the 'stay local' advice will be officially dropped. I will be travelling to see my Mum (about 100 miles away) but we will be meeting outdoors.

ohhmygosh · 19/03/2021 12:39

Have they been jabbed? If they e had their second dose by the birthdays, then I'd just go over to theirs or have them over.

Alfaix · 19/03/2021 12:39

Personally we are planning a few day trips over Easter so if you can drive for an hour and meet halfway at a NT place or similar that should be Ok after 29th?

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/03/2021 12:40

We will be doing stuff like that from 29th March, as far as distance goes as far as I see it as long as you don't stay overnight it doesn't matter. You can only meet outside though, public place or in a private garden, up to 6 people or 2 households

RamblingFar · 19/03/2021 12:42

I know several groups aren't restarting activities until April 12th when wider travel is allowed.

March 29th you can meet up, but as far as I know you aren't meant travel out of area.

ChasingRainbows19 · 19/03/2021 12:43

‘Stay at home’ is dropped on the 29th, ‘stay local’ Is the replacement for that’ll the 29th (assuming because hotels and places to stay over etc aren’t open yet)

From the 12th self catering/caravan etc holidays can resume. So I thought it would be then that much further travel across the country was ok.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/03/2021 12:45

It just says minimise journeys and avoid busy times and routes, can't see anything about stay in own area
WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/03/2021 12:49

We will be booking NT places, we usually travel up to about 40 miles to them. There are also a couple of walks which are about 20 miles away which we plan to do

CaCaLand · 19/03/2021 12:59

Instead of the ridiculous bleating about when we can go on holiday or have an alcoholic drink inside, it is this kind of thing the government should be really prioritising.
Just being able to meet family in a small group outside a couple of hours from home.
Hardly any Covid-19 risk, but still something that the low-hanging-fruit hungry police are intent on criminalising.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 19/03/2021 13:04

@CaCaLand the government does not understand business, does not understand family life. So this should not surprise you. If the accounts are to be believed, most of Mr Johnson's children either want nothing to do with him or he does not acknowledge them.

user1493413286 · 19/03/2021 13:07

I thought 29th March when they end the stay home order ; they might still be advising to stay local but it’s advice not legally enforced

Not that I am one to generally defend the government, particularly this load of idiots, but I think you're confusing the press with the government here. Indeed the roadmap doesn't mention holidays.

The problem with meeting in people's homes is that it is thought to be the highest risk activity (most infections are obtained from someone in the same household) and while you could argue that vaccinated people meeting indoors is now low risk, allowing THAT would make the whole thing unenforceable.

CaCaLand · 19/03/2021 13:11

I think that the OP means meeting outside when OP says 'meeting halfway', unless they own a property halfway.

CaCaLand · 19/03/2021 13:13

If people with local families are Covid-safe meeting outside in a group of 6 on March 29, then people with families an hour or two away should be similarly allowed to meet in a group of 6 outside.

RaspberryCoulis · 19/03/2021 13:16

@mrsknottschicken

On the 29th of March the 'stay local' advice will be dropped, I think.
Unless you're in Scotland, in which case you're locked up for at least another month.
CaCaLand · 19/03/2021 13:20

Or Wales, when they can go to the hairdresser already and there is some meeting up outside already!

CovidPostingName · 19/03/2021 13:31

There is currently no legal restriction on how far you can travel in England if your reason for being outside your home is a legally valid one. The strong guidance is to stay local but once the rule of six comes back on 29th that will be dropped anyway as you can perfectly legally meet half way, as indeed you could right now if it were just two of you.

HolmeH · 19/03/2021 13:55

We are travelling to an outdoor Easter event on Easter Saturday. It’s about an hour away from us at child centred country park full of playgrounds & an enchanted woodland walk. They are opening & accepting bookings .. they certainly aren’t opening for the local village it’s located in are they.. I can’t wait.

29th March, the legality of stay at home is dropped & it’ll look just be guidance. I think they’ll be lucky keeping people apart over Easter personally..

We have booked a self catering cottage for mid April near my in-laws and we’ll finally see them outdoors! Either their garden or we’ll meet them on the beach or for walks & picnics. If it’s pushed back then oh well, we’ll just have to move the date or get a refund. And then in May, hopefully life can be reasonably normal like last summer!
