Sorry I just want to confirm something I am 47 and my parents are in their 70's I do all their shopping , cook for them and help my mum with housework , basically been helping to care for them since March 20

My friend said I can get a vaccine as an unpaid carer?

Obviously I have no proof of this but I help my parents a lot

Do you know what I can do ?

You need to either be in receipt of carer's allowance or registered with your council's Carers Support Centre - if you aren't you can register now and then they'll contact you to book an appointment.

Akire · 17/03/2021 20:09

You could also let your Gp know you are an unpaid carer. My surgery always has lots of posters up asking you to do just this. It’s important if you got ill or in hospital and they were left without support and would be u able to sort themselves. Doesn’t sound like they are at that level but it’s good not to wait till that point.

Thanks even if they are a different GP?

Yes because it flags up when you are sick in emergency and should flag them up to SS or someone to check on them. Plus you should be getting flu jab and the like.

You might find this helpful.

It depends on whether your parents actually require support or you’re just being a “good daughter”

DinosaurDiana · 17/03/2021 20:27

Tell your GP that you are a carer.
You do not have to be in receipt of carers allowance.

DinosaurDiana · 17/03/2021 20:29

Have you been on the NHS book a Covid vaccination site and put your details in ?
If your area is ahead you might get lucky.

My DD does everything for me that you list. She does not get carers allowance, nor is she registered with the local authority. She is, however, registered at our GPs as my carer. She is 50 and had her first vaccination yesterday.

All she did was to go into the surgery website and registered herself as my carer. I am cev, so am officially shielding. I'm not sure if your parent is

Wingingit15 · 17/03/2021 20:42

The covid green book classified adult carers as “ Adult carers
Those who are eligible for a carer’s allowance, or those who are the sole or primary carer of an elderly or disabled person who is at increased risk of COVID-19 mortality and therefore clinically vulnerable”

The associated footnote then reads
“ 1 Those clinically vulnerable to COVID include children with severe neuro-disabilities, those who are designated Clinically Extremely vulnerable (CEV), adults who have underlying health conditions (as defined in table 3), and those who need care because of advanced age. Eligible carers should be vaccinated in priority group 6.”

It’s not just “helping out”(my wording not yours!), otherwise you get into very tricky policy arguments around why eg single
Parents who arguably are relied on more shouldn’t be prioritised

Looneytune253 · 17/03/2021 20:52

Depends whether you're just helping them out or they genuinely need the help. Do you have to do any personal care. Do they need carers?

My mother struggles with my father sometimes as he has a condition so I help but i just don't want to "skip" ahead of the q

It is so hard as I go in the house etc

Have your parents presumably been vaccinated? As hopefully there’s a lower risk espec if you keep being careful too. Round here I’ve just seen priority for clinically more vulnerable in the younger age group and there still seem people who barely /don’t go out until vaccinated as at risk themselves but I totally understand wanting one and it may well be ok

You should probably register as carer then anyway unless you’re entitled to bubble

I'm an unpaid carer for my grandparents.
I registered with my GP and I'm booked in next week.
In my area unpaid careers are now eligible, you don't need to be in receipt of carers allowance.

Wingingit15 · 17/03/2021 22:01

It still needs to be for a vulnerable person per the green book above

@notrub this is not true my area are vaccinating unpaid carers who are not in receipt of carers allowance and who aren’t registered as carers with their GP. They are relying on people doing the right thing and not abusing the system.

I quoted the rules - and lots of people seem to have missed the "either or" in that post.

However, nothing stops people abusing the system. The rules are meant to prioritize those who are needed, i.e. where the provided care is essential - but as you say, anyone can log into the website, claim to be a carer, and nobody will ask you differently.

Woodandsky · 18/03/2021 12:39

Do they ask for proof when you turn up for the vaccine though?

I know a genuine unpaid carer who has booked via the website because the gp was no use and I'm worried they will have problems at the vaccine center.
