I had my Astra zeneca jab this morning. Am I worried?

No. I have a background in clinical research and the stats speak for themselves. The blood clot rate across the population that has been vaccinated is actually lower than the expected average. I've read all of the clinical trials for the Modena, Astra Zeneca and Pfizer jab and unless people have actually gone and read and understood the scientific facts and analyses, they really shouldn't be posting damaging rhetoric that will needlessly reduce vaccine uptake.

Good luck to you. Just hope your not in that percentage!

The chance of OP being in that % are ridiculously, ridiculously low, so I'm sure they'll be fine.

Not worried here, either - off to have mine on Friday! Grin

If she is in that percentage, it won't be anything to do with the vaccine. Hope that helps!

I got a blood clot last year, totally out of the blue. Fit and healthy, ran several miles the day before.

Blood clots happen without vaccines!! and yes I’ll hopefully be getting my 2nd AZ vaccine soon!

You're not 'your'

See, my post was way more helpful than yours!!! Grin

No luck needed.

I love the prof on BBC reading out the rare side effects of paracetamol from the leaflet - brilliant & very pointed
As pp mentioned here you can randomly get blood clots for no apparent reason & strokes - I had a young relative in his early 20'syears ago who had a brain bleed & died no sign before no reason apparently very healthy until this happened out of the blue. For the people & family involved overwhelmingly tragic & they will always blame the vax even though it most likely has nothing to do with it.

No doubt someone will be along soon to tie themselves up in unscientific knots as to how it was probably still the vaccine.

somewheresorted · 17/03/2021 18:41

@raviolidreaming 😄

gellico · 17/03/2021 18:41

Sorry if this is a really stupid question OP, but if the blood clot rate is lower than the population average, might that mean that the vaccine actually reduces the likelihood of clots? I just don't understand why it's causing so much panic if it's below the number you'd expect to have clots anyway.

Cookerhood · 17/03/2021 19:59

It's probably just down to.under-reporting. people know it's likely to be unrelated to the vaccine so don't report it as such. Either that or we've found a cure for blood clots & thrombocytopenia (we haven't!)

Windchangeface · 17/03/2021 20:04

I’m more concerned about the vile side effects I’m hearing lots of reports from friends and family of all night vomiting, diarrhoea, sweats, flu like symptoms...etc and all from AZ. Not heard anyone say they had this from Phizer yet

Dementedswan · 17/03/2021 20:07

Considering most of the population will receive AZ this is not helpful.

notrub · 17/03/2021 20:09

Not heard anyone say they had this from Phizer [sic] yet

Probably because:

  1. Pfizer side effects are mostly after the 2nd dose
  2. Most under 70's in the UK have had AZ vaccine - the Pfizer was largely used on the first groups who generally have milder side effects.
WhatNowFrantic · 17/03/2021 20:11

I've had 2 Pfizer vaccines, only side effect was a heavy arm and a headache with the first jab
DD also had 2 Pfizer vaccinations, she had sweats, vomiting and headaches with both.
I obviously couldn't choose which vaccines I had but I would had had no qualms about having the AZ

raincamepouringdown · 17/03/2021 20:12

I fully plan to have mine next week. Would be crazy not to, frankly.

If she is in that percentage, she would have got the clot vaccinated or not.

Are you on/been on the pill? That actually has an increased risk of blood clots, but I don’t see people turning that down.

Flying increases the risk of clots, do you go on holiday or stay at home in case you’re “in that percentage”

Being female and 40 increases your risk of clots. How do you plan on getting round that one?

Sparklingbrook · 17/03/2021 20:19

Nobody I know that's had the AZ has had anything more than a headache/feeling a bit hot as a side effect.
I'm getting mine tomorrow and going straight back to work.

My husband had the AZ yesterday and today feels a bit rubbish nothing that aspirin and an afternoon kip couldn’t fix I’m having mine on Friday and have made no plans for Saturday incase I feel rubbish too. It’s absolutely nothing compared to the awful illness

Cherrysherbet · 17/03/2021 20:30

When I am lucky enough to receive my call, I will gratefully take the Astra Zeneca.

In Germany they are worried because the 7 cases are a rare form of thrombosis.^^ I'm just reporting, because I hadn't realised this and it is interesting. I'm not an anti vaxxer!
^
Spahn^ (German Health Minister) confirmed that there have been seven cases in Germany where a blood clot has occurred after someone has received the vaccine. Three of the cases were fatal.
The thrombosis identified is a rare type, which made the relatively small number of cases suspicious.
“Last week it looked as if the problems that had occurred were ordinary thromboses. They are quite common,” Anke Huckriede, professor of vaccinology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, told Science Media Center. “Now there is apparently newer information that it is a very rarely occurring form of thrombosis, of which some cases now seem to have occurred shortly after vaccination.”
On Tuesday, the PEI clarified that six of the cases were of sinus venous thrombosis in women aged between 20 and 50.
“Two of these cases, tragically, were fatal,” PEI head Klaus Cichutek told Die Welt.
A further thrombosis case was identified in a male of unknown age.
“We did a further analysis and saw that for a number of about 1.5 million vaccinations, the number of these cases is above the threshold of the normal occurrence,” Cichutek said.
Spahn said that while this is a “very low risk” compared to the 1.6 million jabs already given in the country, it would be above average if confirmed to be linked to the vaccine.
According to Spiegel, this type of thrombosis occurs normally in around around two to five people per million in a year.

@Jemenfouscompletement Yes what I've been reading the Dutch press is that its not the blood clots that some find concerning but the combination of blood clots and a drastic drop in red blood cells. They all say blood clots are something that can happen with vaccines but this combination with a drop in red blood cells is not something they expect to happen.

Also they are not saying that AZ is to blame for it, just that all the patience had the AZ vaccine recently. It could be a combination of AZ with something else, or bad handling, or a bad batch I guess. This is why they are investigating.
