Travel that is only allowing the vaccinated - what about their children?

Partner and I have both had our 1st dose so by the time we wish to travel we’ll have been fully vaccinated.

We have a 1 year old who obviously isn’t and won’t be vaccinated, what do we think will happen in this scenario?

I am guessing that children under a certain age will be exempt.

I doubt they will ban all under 16s, it will be likely they will require a negative test before entry for them, possibly one before going back to the UK too.

Donotfeedthebears · 17/03/2021 10:40

It’ll be interesting if they introduce vaccine passports domestically if booster shots are needed. It’s going to be a logistical nightmare to continually vaccinate the population and you’ll be out of date quite easy or months behind in booster shots as there would be huge backlogs

“Sorry love, your passport is out of date, no pub for you!”

minniemoocher · 17/03/2021 10:47

It may vary, Greece and Spain have indicated they will accept 2 vaccines (plus 3 weeks) or 2 negative pcr tests but that could change

minniemoocher · 17/03/2021 10:49

@caringcarer

Virgin is over 18's anyway, some TUI ships are over 18's too, saga is over 50's!

lljkk · 17/03/2021 10:53

Absolutely no one who has not received both vaccines can board the ship

I wonder if they will have problem recruited eligible staff. June seems awfully early for everyone to have had both jabs.

Caspianberg · 17/03/2021 11:01

I have no idea. I live in a different Eu country, and they are only vaccinating over 80 and healthcare workers so far. So general population won’t be vaccinated for years, I’m not sure they are even planning on ever vaccinating under 50/60. We have a baby as well.
I would like to go back to the uk at the end of the summer as it would have been 2 years since seen family

@caringcarer

P&O cruises have just released only vaccinated can go on their cruises from June. I heard a spokesperson on radio this morning say children will not be allowed to travel on these cruises. Absolutely no one who has not received both vaccines can board the ship. They said it is because on a ship people are in close proximity and also they tend to have a more elderly population taking cruises. Apparently Virgin cruises too. Other cruises are expected to follow suit. For same reasons.
I saw this. What about those who genuinely can't have the vaccine (not because they have chosen against it)?
Violetlavenders · 17/03/2021 11:35

Greece and Spain have indicated they will accept 2 vaccines (plus 3 weeks) or 2 negative pcr tests

That seems sensible. Those who haven't or cannot have the vaccine, can provide a negative PCR test.

I suspect once more data comes out of Brazil on how much of a disaster they are experiencing and our numbers start going back up with schools open, foreign travel will be extremely limited this year. So I wouldn’t get too worked up over this. Anyone foolish enough to have booked a foreign holiday for this year since the pandemic began must have understood the risk they took doing so.

Frazzled2207 · 17/03/2021 12:36

@pennylane83
Good point - cruise ship workers will be the younger end of the age spectrum. They won’t be vaccinated which makes a bit of mockery of only letting vaccinated people on the ship

Delatron · 17/03/2021 12:43

I think many counties will accept either a vaccination or negative tests. So children can have the tests. They can’t have another year of no tourism. It’s interesting that already countries are setting out their stalls and welcoming tourists from mid May.

What the conditions of reentry to the UK will be remains to be seen but we’ll probably know more in April.

PinkDaffodil2 · 17/03/2021 12:44

Rates amongst children here will presumable go up the next few months as we unlock, so I’d expect most countries to require vaccines / tests / quarantine.
Travel insurance is going to be tricky too if you’re not vaccinated, I guess it would need to cover you delaying your journey home abs quarantining abroad as well as any medical attention.
We have a one year old and are planning domestic holidays this year, but I’m happy if my parents etc can go abroad and keep the resorts in business.

PinkDaffodil2 · 17/03/2021 12:46

Also it would suck if they change the rules about re-entry to the uk shirk you are abroad in response to a new variant. If there is mandatory quarantine on return from some countries I wonder if being fully vaccinated would give you an exemption.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 17/03/2021 12:48

We’ve written off the idea of going abroad this year entirely, as DD is 3 so clearly not going to be eligible for vaccination any time soon. I don’t know whether any exemptions would be brought in even though they make sense. Views expressed on the threads about, for example, P&O, make people’s views about children and young adults quite clear. I’d hope the holiday industry would lobby hard for exemptions for children because I can’t imagine they could get to anything near profitability again if no families with under 18s were able to travel.

lurker101 · 17/03/2021 12:48

@lljkk someone mentioned on another thread, and I think it’s highly likely, that the vaccination requirement will be mainly so that the ship can dock and passengers can disembark. They can provide the countries they are docking with confirmation that all passengers disembarking have been vaccinated. The as yet unvaccinated staff would be required to remain onboard at the docking countries requiring vaccination I imagine. However as time goes on, many of the staff will be able to get vaccinated privately, or as they become eligible wherever they are resident.
