Why do some people have side effects to vaccine

I’m curious about the science behind this. I had my first vaccine at the weekend and have felt dreadful. Aches and tiredness - not had Covid as far as I know. My 80 year old mother sailed through the vaccine. Why are different peoples immune systems responding differently?

Good article about this in the BBC today:

Whoops, already been posted, clearly didn't read the full thread :D

Teenageromance · 17/03/2021 17:56

@JorisBonson I’ve got a really strong immune system and had side effects so don’t think it is related

@Teenageromance I've had it now so will just ride out whatever comes along! ☺️

To anyone else with a needle phobia, it took a split second and I genuinely didn't feel a thing

This may already have been posted, but this is on the BBC website:

My mum and partner in their 70s had bad side effects. Time off work. They'd had covid 6 weeks before so maybe that had something to do with it.

Grinch48 · 18/03/2021 00:11

My dad had it and a week later he was in hospital
He’s still there now and has been there 4 weeks as of Sunday
Diabetes levels were as high as 35 & as low as 3.5 never been like that in his life .
Can’t use the arm that he had the jab in at all can’t hold a pen or a cup in his hand .
He’s had Pneumonia a few weeks ago and they think he might have again .
He has fluid on his lungs and is on oxygen
Doctor said it’s like he has all the symptoms of Covid but every test he’s had has come back negative
I honestly don’t know what to make of it as he wasn’t in particularly good health with underlying conditions but he just went downhill rapidly after having the jab

thesunwillout · 18/03/2021 12:59

Oh Grinch48 I'm sorry your dad has had such an awful time of it.
You must be very confused and worried about him.
Very strange indeed, I hope he gets the care he needs x

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/03/2021 13:02

Someone on here said France have identified w strain that evades testing. Hope your dad is ok

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 13:23

Then there is the psychological effect:
Some people read a list of possible side effects and promptly get them (or think they do) others operate on a 'I'll find out soon enough' basis and feel nothing.

(That's why I avoided to read the list for my chemo.)

Women typically have stronger immune systems, which is why they often react worse. I'd say I have a very good immune system and I had a reaction to the vaccine (not bad - just felt a bit rubbish for 24 hours). DH had his yesterday and has been absolutely fine. Blood group is also a possibility as he's O+ and I'm A+.

YogaLite · 20/03/2021 09:42

@zafferana, that's interesting, thank you.
The latest blood clot cases are apparently also mostly happening in women.

Gladioli23 · 20/03/2021 09:45

As well as the article they did a great inside health episode on this on radio 4:

DorisDay88 · 20/03/2021 10:15

Has anyone suffered palpitations after the vaccine? I had mine yesterday, had an almost immediate chemical taste in my mouth then around 30 minutes later my lips started tingling
Then the palpitations started , lasted all night and still got them
Otherwise no other symptoms apart from a numb tongue
Anyone else?

BigButtons · 20/03/2021 10:31

I am 53 and I had the AZ on Thursday at midday. I am otherwise in good health.
Within half an hour my arm was semi numb and I was no longer alert enough to drive. I was shocked at how violently my body reacted. I had all of the commonly listed symptoms and also got electric shock type pains in my limbs- really really horrible- which made my whole body go into a couple of seconds of convulsions each time. The convulsions are mostly stopped now but come randomly.
I could not walk or lift my arm and had to be helped to the toilet. It was bad enough to make me cry- a lot. I felt scared tbh.
I reported this on the yellow card thing.
I am feeling better today , but still feel very weak and exhausted.

Call 111. Some of these symptoms can be clot related too.
BigButtons · 20/03/2021 10:38

Really?😱

Zig4zag · 20/03/2021 10:59

@Teenageromance

I’d say I had a strong immune system - not had a cold or flu for years. So why would I react strongly to the vaccine?
This doesn't show a strong immune system. This shows lack of contact. Immune system would be getting it but getting over it quickly.
Oblomov21 · 20/03/2021 11:15

It's wierd isn't it? I think I have a strong immune system, am never ill, and has practically no symptoms after Pfizer only a sore arm.

VienneseWhirligig · 20/03/2021 11:23

I was wiped out with flu symptoms for 2 days, and my arm still hurts 2 weeks on. I'm glad I had it though. Weird thing is, one of the medications I take daily has become ineffective since the day after the vaccine. It worked perfectly before and now I take it and it is as if I have not. I've reported it on the yellow card scheme but its not one of the ones you are asked about when you have the jab.

thesunwillout · 20/03/2021 11:50

Yeah my arm just got more bruised as this week has gone on. It's a week tomorrow.
Have had inflammation, fatigue, headaches, nausea.
All at different times and my god the sweats.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2021 17:38

If inflammation or the vaccination caused symptoms then a lot more people would have had serious problems associated with the vaccinations. In almost all countries young, male and female health care workers receive the vaccination so it’s not even correct to say being young and female causes serious side effects.

It’s not even linked to any one covid vaccine - all the vaccines have had some form of reported serious clotting problems. So it’s most likely a side effect of getting coronavirus - and if that’s the case then these people might have had worse symptoms with the disease.
