Ibuprofen or paracetamol

LadyAgripina · 16/03/2021 15:49

I had the AZ vaccine yesterday at 3 o clock, have paracetamol before and after and have a good night. Now I feel rough, like fluey, shivering, horrible headache, redness, joint pain and sleepy. can I have ibuprofen instead of paracetamol? The paracetamol I took today is not doing nothing and normally I take ibuprofen. Even when the AZ site mentions both it seems ti be a consensus here on paracetamol. Why? 🧐 Thank you

Can take either

FlyingBurrito · 16/03/2021 15:53

If I felt that rough I'd have already taken what ever painkiller works best for me, I wouldn't consult the world

Get off the internet and swallow some pills Grin

Hope you feel better soon

I can assure you that neither will alter your colouring Grin

Sorry, couldn't resist, although I have no idea what the Italian reference means

Paracetamol reduces the detection of pain receptors and brings down fever. Ibuprofen reduces swelling (and therefore reduces any pain which is attributable to swelling anywhere e.g. your joint pain) and can also reduce fever to some extent. You can take both if needed - I tend to alternate between the two, having a dose of one or the other every 2.5 hours if really poorly, as that makes the total of 7 doses (between the two drugs) cover all of the "awake" part of the day until it is bedtime again.

Ibuprofen is anti-inflammatory. By binding COX receptors it reduces prostaglandin production. As prostaglandins are involved in immune responses this is why people say to take paracetamol rather than ibuprofen. However, taking a few ibuprofen is unlikely to stop the vaccine working and if you're suffering and paracetamol isn't working then go ahead and take some.

@JS87 thank you! I already had Grin
