Horrible taste/smell months later

Anyone else? I had Covid in December, lost all sense of taste and smell for quite awhile, then it all came back fine except I don't think my sense of smell was as good as before.

Then a couple of weeks ago I had a cheese toastie and it tasted vile. I thought something was off with it so didn't eat it. Then a few days later with a couple of McDonald's fries I nabbed out of DCs happy meal. It's a really terrible rotting/off taste that I can't describe. I'm slowly noticing it appearing in more foods, some faintly/an aftertaste, some strongly. Chips is a massive no no, smell and taste gross. Last night my cod which I did really simply in the oven with a little butter had the taste faintly, and this morning a fried egg was a bit bad Sad

I'm thinking fried or fatty foods is the issue, doesn't seem to matter if it's veg oil, olive oil, coconut oil or a tiny knob of butter. I'm worried it's going to keep getting worse until everything tastes bad. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had Covid at New Year. I dont think my smell and taste are back to normal. I can just about taste tea now but coffee smells literally like shit. Thankfully I can taste it a bit better Grin

I cannot taste subtle flavours of anything and chocolate does not taste as good. Burnt toast smells like gas, I keep thinking we have a gas leak but its just the toaster, DH and DD like their toast very well done.

Its not good but I am hoping in time it all comes back.

Couldn't eat my dinner, just too much of the flavour. DH suggested plain scrambled eggs as a neutral option. I really, really like scrambled eggs, favourite comfort food as a kid. But the smell made me gag, both rotting and metallic. I tried to eat it holding my nose but within a few seconds of the first mouthful I couldn't.
The bad taste seems to be staying in my mouth even after brushing my teeth. I guess the impact on my appetite should help me lose the last few pounds.

Oops pressed post too soon.

Sorry you're having a similar experience. Weird how it's just some things isn't it!? Can you drink coffee despite the smell or is the smell and taste linked?

Same here - positive in December, now completely well but it's so weird how it's affected my sense of smell. Coffee smells disgusting, something like mouldy vinegar, I can't smell the 'nice smells' of perfume, just raw chemical, and toast smells disgusting. I really hope it goes back to normal, as it's much more of an unpleasant side affect than it sounds, and actually gets me down a bit sometimes.

It's a common, or at least not-unheard-of after effect - google Covid and parosmia.
I'm in a FB group for people who've developed it and timelines are all very similar - Covid towards end of last year, back to normal then a few months later hit by the Covid smell.
Mine started with a constant smell of burning and then onto so many things smelling and tasting very strange - a sickly sweet chemical smell.
Once you learn your triggers, it gets easier.
I find that anything spicy or vinegary is much more palatable, and I also have a stash of Vicks inhalers round the house to clear the Covid smell for a while.
I've also found that smell training seems to helping.

There might be some useful info on the website Fifth Sense. I’m anosmic most of the time which, to be honest, sounds preferable to what you’re experiencing. Mine is autoimmune related rather than COVID. Good luck.
