COVID and the vaccine

Has anyone had COVID, got over it and then had the vaccine?, if so, which vaccine did you have and how did you feel after having the vaccine?

I had Covid 11 weeks ago and last week had the AZ jab.

I was quite rough for 24 hours, fever, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, sore arm for a few days but glad I had it.

Takeitonthechin · 17/03/2021 10:11

Thanks for the reply, I'm 2 weeks past COVID and now have my vaccine booked in within the next few days. I've still not got my smell and taste back fully. I want the vaccine but I'm not looking forward to the after effects.

I believe that you need to wait 28 days after a positive test before you have the vaccine.

Takeitonthechin · 17/03/2021 21:42

I didn't know this, I will certainly ask, thank you for pointing this out

Yes I had the jab yesterday and they asked me before they gave it me if I had tested positive for Covid in the last 4 weeks.

Takeitonthechin · 19/03/2021 16:48

@DarceyDashwood I will certainly bring it up before I have it, thank you

I have. I felt headachy and wanting to lie around the day after the vaccine and not much better the day after that. Then perfectly ok again the following day. But I think that's usual. I had AZ.

letthegrassgrow · 19/03/2021 17:35

But it wasnt 4 week.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/03/2021 17:39

I don't think you can have the vaccine within 28 days of having Covid, I think you'll need to cancel your appointment

You need to cancel so somebody else can have your appointment, as you won’t be allowed it with that timeframe.
Northernsoullover · 19/03/2021 17:41

My partner had to cancel his appointment because he had covid 3 weeks prior.

Lindy2 · 19/03/2021 20:28

The moment I stepped through the vaccine centre door I was asked 2 questions. 1. Did I have an appointment. 2. Had I tested positive for Covid in the last 28 days.

They won't vaccinate you I'm afraid OP. You need to cancel and book for another date at least 28 days after your positive result.

I waited 7 weeks after my positive test before I was vaccinated. I felt fluey for 24 hours afterwards and a bit off for the next 24 hours after that. I was fine after 48 hours and even during the side effects, it was nothing that paracetamol couldn't sort out and nothing like as bad as actually having Covid. I had AZ.

HandyBendySandy · 19/03/2021 21:05

I had covid quite badly back in November, and now I feel uncharacteristically anxious about having the vaccination now - because I'm afraid of the side effects being bad, owing to a stronger immune response. Is that a thing?

I've been studiously dismissing anecdotal evidence on the internet of the extent of side effects, but now loads of people I know directly have suffered too. I haven't booked it even though I've been invited. DH had his today and has felt a bit out of sorts, but generally OK - not even a headache. He did have covid just after me, but very very mildly...

Lindy2 · 19/03/2021 22:55

HandyBendySandy I had side effects for around 48 hours but honestly it wasn't anything that paracetamol couldn't deal with. I didn't feel like doing anything much other than lying on the sofa and watching tv but actually it was quite nice to be able to just chill and do nothing. After 48 hours I was absolutely fine.

I had my vaccine on a Saturday morning so I had the whole weekend to take it easy.

Lindy2 · 19/03/2021 22:58

I had Covid quite badly in January. I definitely don't want it again so the vaccine was important to me even though I should already have antibodies. I need them to stay topped up!

HandyBendySandy · 20/03/2021 07:53

As recently as that @Lindy2! I'm feeling a bit less anxious this morning, I decided to read a couple of threads where side effects have been minimal and starting to feel braver.

I don't know why I'm being such a drip about it, I was really unwell with covid and originally thought nothing can be as bad as that (and I did feel sick with it) - but I was suddenly gripped with fear about being horribly nauseous or sick after a stupid injection, as no paracetamol can help that. It's just emetophobic anxiety though, I need to get a grip. I want us all to be freeeee!!

Lindy2 · 20/03/2021 08:22

I was terribly nauseous when I had Covid - although I was never actually sick. That and awful ear ache were my worst symptoms.

I had absolutely no nausea at all after the vaccine. It was fluey chills and then sweating. Both symptoms I didn't have at all with the actual virus.

Just think how well protected you'll be with antibodies from Covid as well as the vaccine.

SophieB100 · 20/03/2021 08:25

This is strange, because when I had my first AZ jab on Thursday, they asked me if I had tested positive within 14 days. So why are different centres saying different time frames?

Sbk28 · 20/03/2021 08:36

Had the virus in December. Mild symptoms - flu-like, breathing was slightly laboured, light sensitivity, shivers and fever, headache, exhausted for 9 days, with 4 days barely able to get out of bed.

Had AZ last week. One day of sore joints, headache, light sensitivity, shivers and fever. Weirdly similar to the virus symptoms, but milder, and only lasted 24 hours.

PuzzledObserver · 20/03/2021 08:45

I tested positive on New Year’s Eve and had my first jab (Pfizer) just under 7 weeks later. I had a very mild headache and felt a bit tired for a couple of days.

DH had his first jab at the end of December, and in retrospect we realised the stuffy nose he had at the time was the start of Covid symptoms - so he had it while infected. His only side effect was a sore arm.

There are statistics which show that people with previous Covid infection are more likely to have side effects from the vaccine. However, there is so much variation in how bad they are, it’s not something to get worked up about. Some people have very reactive immune systems, it appears to be partly related to age, but also to a large degree genetic. Nothing you can do about it.
