If my year 11 ds was at a less academic school, would his GCSE grades be higher this year?

DS is probably in the top 3rd of his super selective school. If schools are to rank students this year to award gcse grades, would he theoretically be better off at a less academic school?

If it's like last year the assessed grades should reflect the normal pattern of each school and individual schools will have to make a case if say they think this years kids are a more able cohort than normal.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 16/03/2021 13:12

They are not ranking this year. It is all down to teachers judgement on the evidence. If the results are different to previous years cohorts then they will be checked but if the teachers can justify it, the grades will stand.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/03/2021 13:15

Theyre not ranking though this year.

Why do you assume children at non selective schools are less intelligent than your DS?

AdelaideK · 16/03/2021 13:21

What's a super selective school? Grammar, good comp, private?

frozendaisy · 16/03/2021 13:24

Well I presume you don't know his final grades yet so surely it's difficult to compare what grades are which.

I would email your Head with your concerns I assume the Head will be able to explain the criteria how grades will be awarded this year.

Probably best not to wonder about other schools and just concentrate on your own child. Hopefully everyone getting exam grades this year will get a fair an accurate assessment.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn’t aware that dc weren’t being ranked this year. I was under the impression that if grades were not in line with normal years the school would be flagged and investigated.
I am aware of how that I come across as thinking DSs school is superior to others.
His school is a super selective grammar where dc take the 11+ and they take in dc from the top score working down until full. There are a large number of very academic dc (not saying more intelligent as I think that’s different and comes in different forms).

Yes, I think you're right - if the grades across the cohort seem mad in comparison to previous years, that will be obvious and the school risks being scrutinised/ grades downgraded, etc.

I think he'd be better off at a super selective school. Presumably the school generally produces reams of good results, so no one will bat an eyelid if they area bit better than usual. Whereas more good results than normal in a school that doesn't normally get them will stand out.
