A question for those who have had their second jab recently (or know someone who has)

Did you get the same brand of vaccine as you did first time?

And how did the health authority manage your booking? Were you asked what you had last time? Or did they have supplies of both available when you turned up?

The vaccination programme has been breathtakingly efficient to date, really something to be proud of. But I can't help feeling that it's going to be a challenge to make sure all those already vaccinated get the same vaccine the second time around to complete their course. At my local clinic it seems it's basically that they inject whatever they were sent the day before, at the moment it's all AZ but those having early doses back in January were mostly Pfizer - and it's these people who are now being called back for second doses.

I was so happy to have my first dose of Oxford AZ this week. I won't be as happy if when I go for my second jab in May I am offered a different medicine, which are, after all, made with completely different technologies and entirely untested in conjunction with one another.

Please reassure me that there is some system in place to stop this happening!

I'm an NHS worker and was given the same vaccine. They did check on my card which one I'd had before but I couldn't tell you if both were available that day.

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 14/03/2021 09:22

I think we're supposed to have the same vaccine both times.

SonnetForSpring · 14/03/2021 09:23

Yes same vaccine twice for my dad. I don't think they have decided to mix vaccines yet.

minniemoocher · 14/03/2021 09:25

They had both kinds at the centre I went to this week. Pfizer was only available for those having second doses or whose gp has specifically mentioned that they can't have AZ

Alfaix · 14/03/2021 09:28

I had second jab this week AZ.
Where I vaccinate, we have Pfizer clinics or AZ clinics. The Pfizer clinics are purely for second doses now and every effort will be made to book people in for the same foe the second dose.
It’s all very well organised - GP hub- so don’t worry.
If you had AZ you likely won’t have any problems anyway as there’s loads of that.

ikhdfvj · 14/03/2021 09:30

Relative has had second dose, both Pfizer

Emmacb82 · 14/03/2021 09:36

I’ve had second dose, both Pfizer. They phoned to change my appointment to ensure I had a second Pfizer one as they were due a delivery of the Oxford one.

Roomarmoset · 14/03/2021 09:39

I had Pfizer the first time. I was asked to book my second jab which I had on Wednesday. When I got there I was asked if it was my first or second. If it was your second you were being given the Pfizer again but if it was your first you were given the Oxford.

They had different sections in the building, one for Pfizer and one for Oxford.

Frazzled2207 · 14/03/2021 09:41

In Wales they are now prioritising Pfizer for second doses only. So specifically calling up first dose Pfizer people for second doses but not the Az people. My parents got Pfizer on the same day last month and just got their 2nd doses. My uncle who is same age got Az last month and has appointment for his second in May.
What I’m saying is they are arranging the second batch of appointments specifically around what was given the first time.
I don’t think anyone has been given a “mix” so far though it could happen further down the line

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/03/2021 09:44

In my part of Wales I don’t think centres are getting deliveries of both vaccines.

So we have 4 MVC’s in our health board 2 have Pfizer and 2 have AZ,GO surgeries and mobile vaccination teams have AZ. Second doses are being given at the same location as the first.

DingoWings · 14/03/2021 10:09

This is reassuring, thank you.
I am glad they seem to have held back stocks of Pfizer for those who had it initially.
The second doses of those who were vaccinated just after the timing was changed from 3 to 12 weeks will be underway now. My DDad is due for his in a couple of weeks.

As you say, there is plenty of AZ and it's easier to store too, so I have less worry about that being available. I just didn't fancy an untested cocktail.

I had Pfizer at the hospital (health care worker) they phoned me last week and sorted my 2nd so I had it yesterday and they were only doing pfizer again anyway.

I should add that my local clinic offered all Pfizer for the first month / 6 weeks. Now they only seem to be using AZ.

The hub that I work at know what they are getting the week before. They are now starting the second’s so will text/call whoever needs what they have got, starting at the top of the list again.

DinosaurDiana · 14/03/2021 10:15

You wouldn’t get a mix of the two unless it was approved, and it’s not.
Although I can see a possible advantage of having one of each, and apparently they are trialling it.

SendMeHome · 14/03/2021 10:17

You won’t get a mix of the two. Ive been advised not to have the same one that I had again and it’s causing chaos... it’s all set up to “match” you to the same one.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/03/2021 10:21

Pfizer both times.

RoseWineTime · 14/03/2021 10:23

You won’t get a mix of the 2 but I will as I’m in the trial to test this! My second dose is next Sunday. Both Pfizer snd AZ use different technologies to do the same thing and the general thought is that this may well work better than 2 of the same, as is the case with other vaccines. Preliminary results are due in June.

MissyB1 · 14/03/2021 10:23

Dh had his second on Friday. Pfizer both times.

Alfaix · 14/03/2021 10:27

I would have liked to have one of each @RoseWineTime
Sounds a great thing to be part of.

musicalfrog · 14/03/2021 10:33

Well done for putting yourself out there @RoseWineTime

DinosaurDiana · 14/03/2021 10:35

I would have liked one of each too.

RoseWineTime · 14/03/2021 10:37

Thank you @Alfaix and @musicalfrog Smile

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/03/2021 10:53

I'd been wondering this, as I know there had been potential stock issues with Pfizer, due my second in April so hoping to have pfizer again.
