Loss of smell but snotty

I'll take a test tomorrow, but I'll be anxious tonight so help me out...

I had a vaccination about a fortnight ago (CVul). I had covid 19 last year and felt awful but avoided hospital.

On Thursday I developed a cold. Snotty nose etc. The kids are also snotty. Today I've been less snotty but I've completely lost my sense of smell. Completely. I stuck a bottle of vinegar under my nose and there was nothing at all. Normally if I have a cold I can still smell something.

I've had the first vaccination so it's likely just a cold right?

Likely to just be a cold. Even if its not, the vaccine is likely to limit it to just a mild illness. Try not to worry, I'm sure your test results will come soon :)

Unfortunately you cannot be sure it’s just a cold without going for a test. I had exactly this back in January snotty with a blocked nose, I could barely smell anything I could just about smell my olbas stick when I shoved it up my nose. My covid test turned out to be positive and I had had my first vaccine just under a month prior to being unwell.

Whatever it is I hope you feel better soon. Fingers crossed for it being just a cold 🤞

Vaccination doesn't stop you becoming infected. It simply speeds up the immune response.

Rest assured that even though you may develop symptoms (most vaccinated people don't), it's highly unlikely to become serious.

Thank you. It's still the same this morning. I can't even smell vicks vaporup and I've always been able to smell that when I have a cold. I'm more worried that if I do have it, I'll have passed it on to DH. I was also in the office one day last week. Ah well, cross that bridge if it comes to it. A friend is a nurse and is going to give me one of her lateral flow tests this morning so I can get an instant result

You need to book a proper test if you have symptoms. Don’t rely on the LFT.

Thatwentbadly · 14/03/2021 06:52

Lateral flow tests are not suitable if you have symptoms because they are not accurate enough. You also need to isolate, as does the rest of your house, until you get the rests of a the lab test.

A nurse? You would think she would know better!

Book yourself a test and self isolate!!

Imfedupwithallofthis · 14/03/2021 07:11

I am surprised that your nurse friend is going to give you one of her lateral flow tests. She must realise that a) they are not suitable for those with symptoms and b) that the tests are for her use only.
What will you do if the test is negative? What will your family do? The answer should be isolate until PCR test result available and negative.

It is unlikely to be a cold if you can smell nothing at all.

ChameleonClara · 14/03/2021 07:14

You must do a PCR test.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9351369/Ex-health-secretary-Jeremy-Hunt-test-positive-coronavirus.html so sorry for mail link, I did try hard but the only other one was the sun which is worse imo! Anyway, yes you could be positive. Protect others, test properly.

legalseagull · 14/03/2021 07:41

I didn't know the tests were any less accurate. Thanks for telling me. I would have got a negative result and headed out for the day! I'll book a proper test now

I've booked a proper test for 10am. I'll do the LFT as well
