Reaction to vaccines?

I never seem to have any reaction to vaccines so far. Probably means I have a crap immune system! Does that mean I’m less likely to have a reaction to Covid vaccine? Deciding whether to try and schedule it on day where I’m off from work the next day.

I don't know how much correlation there is between your personal immune system and whether you react, but I would schedule for having the day off afterwards if that's possible. I felt rubbish for 24 hours, as if I had a bad cold but without the nose and throat systems. Nothing unmanageable but I'd rather not have been at work.

LApprentiSorcier · 12/03/2021 12:23

nose and throat symptoms, not systems.

partyatthepalace · 12/03/2021 18:33

There is no correlation between how well a vaccine works and a person’s reaction. It isn’t known why some people react and some don’t.

I don’t usually react to them and I didn’t react to this one, so hopefully you won’t.

Cloudyrainsham · 13/03/2021 00:50

I’ve got a great immune system. I never or very rarely get ill, a cold every few years. I had no reaction to the covid vaccine at all. A very slightly tender spot on my arm.

Mooselaurels · 13/03/2021 08:18

I had the vaccine yesterday and dear god I feel like death right now. Very rough night. Kept going hot and cold, very tired, headache, arm hurts, generally feel like crap.

I had Covid in January, and apart from breathing issues the vaccine reaction is about on a par with how ill Covid made me. I'm hoping it wears off soon!!

LApprentiSorcier · 13/03/2021 08:21

Sorry to hear this, Mooselaurels. It only lasted about a day for me.

OatcakeCravings · 13/03/2021 08:22

I had the vaccine yesterday and I had no reaction at all, not even a sore arm.

Haspotential · 13/03/2021 08:26

I reacted badly to last 2018 flu vaccine and the previous years, but didn't react badly to 2019 flu vaccine (apart from sore arm for 48 hours). The other years I felt like I had flu.

I'm dreading the side effects but will get the vaccine when called up. Make sure that you have adequate paracetamol and take to the bed maybe! Good advice to take it on a Friday or otherwise, book next day off work.

Haspotential · 13/03/2021 08:26

@OatcakeCravings

I had the vaccine yesterday and I had no reaction at all, not even a sore arm.
Was it the Pfizer one?
YukoandHiro · 13/03/2021 08:27

@Mooselaurels - it only lasted 24 hours for me

DinosaurDiana · 13/03/2021 08:28

I’ve never had a reaction to any vaccination, travel/occupational/annual flu, so I was very surprised to find myself feeling crap and sleeping the next day away.

confusednortherner · 13/03/2021 08:30

@Mooselaurels I feel for you I had the Pfizer 2 weeks ago and first 24 hrs I felt terrible! Gradually wore off over next few days but the swelling under my arm could still be felt for a week. Hope you feel better soon

HeadNorth · 13/03/2021 08:35

When my mum (late 70s) had the vaccine she was pretty ill for a few days afterwards - bad flu like symptoms. Was fine by about day 4 or 5 afterwards and no long term effects. I think her mistake was to try to keep going as normal - when she has her second jag she will make sure she rests properly afterwards. Still a huge relief she has that protection now.

OatcakeCravings · 13/03/2021 08:38

@Haspotential no it was the AZ one

Notonthestairs · 13/03/2021 08:42

I had the AZ yesterday. Mild headache last night but I didn't need paracetamol. So far so good.

Karwomannghia · 13/03/2021 08:45

I’ve never had a reaction to flu jabs and am not often ill but I had a reaction to the Oxford vaccine- like flu for a few hours, chills sweats and aches- not pleasant but thankfully short lived! Be interesting to see why some react and some don’t.

KnottyKnitting · 13/03/2021 09:13

I had mine on Thursday afternoon- slightly sore arm bit of a headache( but I get them a lot anyway) but nothing else. I am rarely ill ( think 1 slight cold every 3 years-and I am a teacher so am exposed to loads of germy children!)

Boiledeggandtoast · 13/03/2021 09:37

I had mine yesterday. I felt fine when I went to bed but woke at about 1 am feeling sweaty and aching. I still feel fairly awful, but I'm hoping it's short-lived. For context, I haven't even had a cold for about 3 years and I work in a primary school so plenty of exposure to germs!

minniemoocher · 13/03/2021 09:45

Had mine yesterday (AZ) sore arm and feel fatigued. I would suggest having it when you have a day off the next day, I don't fancy driving to be honest but will walk up to the shops (10 mins) later

TwoHoots74 · 13/03/2021 11:10

I had mine yesterday (AZ) felt ok initially then 8 hrs later I felt like my whole body ached, sore throat, lymph nodes were up, headache, nausea and couldn't warm up. But then all through the night I've had a temperature. Still feel awful today headache, sore arm fatigue etc. I can't be bothered to shower even. That's so not me.

I never react to flu vaccine and never have colds or flu either. This has just wiped me out.

Midlifephoenix · 13/03/2021 11:18

Schedule it for a Friday then you have the weekend to recover. Most of my friends had minimal side effects. I had awful headache and felt a bit fluey for 48 hours but then back to normal.

DinosaurDiana · 13/03/2021 12:12

A practice nurse told me that there is some thought that the people who had reactions have had Covid.
I suppose that the only way to test that is to ask every one, that has had a positive Covid test, whether they felt unwell after their jab.

CthulhuChristmas · 13/03/2021 12:25

I had the AZ vaccine on Thursday afternoon. Felt fine afterwards but woke in the middle of the night with fever, chills and muscle aches. Didn't sleep much after that. Friday was the same, along with extreme fatigue - much more than would be normal after a disturbed night. Slept 11 hours straight through last night and feel absolutely fine this morning.

It was awful while I was going through it - comparable to the last time I had flu. Over much more quickly, though, and I'm still pleased that I had the vaccine. I'm glad that I'd arranged things so that I didn't have to do anything on Friday and could stay in bed!

justanothername2 · 13/03/2021 13:19

I’ve had flu vaccine for years. During pregnancy I also had the whooping cough vaccine (combined with polio and tetanus)

I travelled to Africa a few years ago and had several vaccinations to go.

Didn’t react to any of these.

Had the Covid vaccine yesterday (Oxford)
I’ve had a high temp, shivers, aches and headache 😞

Mooselaurels · 14/03/2021 14:07

After feeling totally wretched for approx 24-36 hours after having the AZ jab, I'm pleased to report I'm feeling absolutely fine now - slept like a log last night and now all I'm left with is a bit of a sore arm.

When it's time for my 2nd dose I'll book it for a Monday so if I'm poorly again I can at least take a day off work Grin
