glasses dependent child struggling with mask in school

Hi
My son has very poor eyesight and can hardly focus without his glasses on. We've tried all of the masks (foam bridge support, wire etc) but he is really struggling in school with mask steaming up his glasses. Is there any exemption for children in schools do you know. He is happy to wear them walking between classes but struggles with reading
Thanks

www.uksportseyewear.co.uk/anti-fog-gel/ This gets good reviews.... and could solve the problem?

TooStressyTooMessy · 11/03/2021 21:45

Has he tried any type of anti fog wipes? Or the gel recommended above? I find anti fog wipes have made a huge difference to me (glasses wearer, have to wear a mask all day at work).

Have you tried the plastic mask clip thing for the nose?

Think they are on Amazon?

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/03/2021 21:47

Yes I've tried these wipes and was impressed:

My DD1 is registered blind and has about 10 per cent overall sight but no peripheral vision. We’re not anti-maskers and want to be as compliant as possible to the legislation and guidelines but masks were so detrimental to my DD that I contacted the RNIB who wrote an exemption letter to her secondary school. If your son’s eyesight is so poor does he have QTVI or SENCO involvement who could help navigate this issues at school?

He isn't so bad that he has SENCO involvement but wouldn't ever be without his glasses unless asleep. I've ordered some anti fog stuff Thanks everyone

Smear a teeny amount of washing up liquid on the lense.

Let it dry.

Problem solved.

BentBastard · 11/03/2021 22:10

My son uses anti fog wipes which he said work surprisingly well for him.

I was also worried as he has a fairly strong prescription and can't function without.

bellagogosdead · 11/03/2021 22:11

I find it's taking masks off and on again that causes fogging. If I just keep the mask on it stops happening.
But. I am not in a classroom with loads of teenagers breathing! I expect it makes a difference.

Smallinthesmoke · 11/03/2021 22:15

How old is he? If he is 12 plus, you could think about contact lenses? Actually I think that even younger children can wear them if they are the sensible sort.

glugg · 11/03/2021 22:15

Would a neck buff thingy work, if he's allowed? I've found it fits much more snugly across the nose than any mask I've tried and my glasses rarely steam up. I tacked it up a bit so it was a tighter fit but it's still comfortable. I've not found a single mask that my glasses don't steam up with.

PickAChew · 11/03/2021 22:16

Be careful putting stuff on the lenses if he has coated lenses (which thinned lenses very often are). It can completely trash them.

Oh now you've worried me as my dons lenses are thinned. Would anti fog wipes be a problem?

TooStressyTooMessy · 11/03/2021 22:19

PickAChew makes a good point. I got my wipes the first time from my opticians so am hopeful they will be ok with my coated lenses but yes, some stuff may not be ok to put on them.

Bagelsandbrie · 11/03/2021 22:21

I am extremely short sighted (-9.50 both eyes) and cannot wear a mask with glasses. I’ve tried everything, all the tips mentioned here and the washing up liquid thing. It makes the lenses smeary. When you’re very short sighted any little change makes it very difficult to see. Thankfully I can wear my contact lenses most days so I avoid the whole exemption issue but for a child that cannot do this I would absolutely push the medical exemption route.

TheSockMonster · 11/03/2021 22:29

Possibly not very practical, but a surgeon friend said he tapes his mask to his face all the way along the top to prevent his glasses steaming up during surgery.

Lonecatwithkitten · 11/03/2021 22:33

I have to wear a mask all day and I can not see anything without my glasses.
I tie knots in the ear loops of my mask to bring the edges together and tuck the folds into the mask in put the mask on first ensuring that it is well up the bridge of my nose. I then put the glasses on top of the mask.
The only time this fails is when I repeatable have to go from the warm building outside to talk to clients. Inside it's perfect.

Soontobe60 · 11/03/2021 22:36

I got the anti fog wipes from the opticians in Morrisons - game changer! However, it is quite disorientating when Ive got my mask on, it does affect my eyesight in a weird way.

Nc967125 · 11/03/2021 22:39

Someone advised me to push my glasses a tiny bit further down my nose - literally 0.5cm. Feels strange at first but I can see fine and they don't fog. I also use anti fog wipes every morning but dont think they make a massive difference if I'm honest!

ComDummings · 11/03/2021 22:40

Surgical tape to ‘seal’ the mask across your nose and cheeks. Also breathing downwards if that makes sense? Stick top lip over bottom and push the air downwards. Looks a bit silly when you try it but with a mask on nobody can tell Grin

BentBastard · 11/03/2021 22:40

Ah those are the exact ones I got my son! Glad to hear they are optician recommended.
