How likely am I to get Covid from DS if I’m vaccinated.

I’m having my Covid vaccine tomorrow.

I’m group 6 due to a BMI of 40.1 Confused

I’m due back to work in 3 weeks and I’m office based.

By the time I’m back at work I’ll have some protection should I catch Covid.

My worry is that my son is starting nursery on Monday.
He’s only going to be going 3 full days but for the next 3 weeks he’s doing settling in days.

He’s 13 months.

The nursery haven’t had a confirmed Covid case since November but I’m starting to panic that now schools are back cases will go up.

I won’t be protected by the vaccine should he transmit the virus to me.

I can’t delay my start date with work as I’ve already done this to accommodate (twice)
and I can’t send my son to nursery in 3 weeks for full days without any settling in sessions.

He’s a lockdown baby and he’s hardly seen anyone.

I’m really anxious and don’t know what to do for the best.

My area has fewer than 3 cases. I had the jab 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I've just tested positive. Quite possibly from my pre school son.

Oh and my lateral flow test was negative.

That's total rotten luck Rebecca Sad. How are your symptoms? Currently shielding but had first Pfizer jab four weeks ago, feel like with two DC's in primary it's only a matter of time until we're exposed.

My pal had her first jab 6 weeks ago and has just tested positive and feeling a bit rotton/no sense of smell. Hopefully its just as far as it will go.

So all in all, need to act like you're not vaccinated as usual I think.

RebeccaCloud9 · 20/03/2021 19:27

I know! But the jab increases your protection even before the 3 weeks, so really hoping it keeps my symptoms lower.

@Racoonworld

You won’t have any protection from the vaccine until 3 weeks after you gave it, so if your DS catches it before then you have the same chances as if you weren’t vaccinated.
False.

Protection against symptomatic infection starts after 10 days (Pfizer) 14 days (AZ) See Figure 1

In ADDITION to this, the risk of serious disease after 14 days is half that of unvaccinated.

i.e. after 14 days you're less likely to get symptoms and if you do, it's far less likely to do you any serious harm.

Well, OP, I had Covid at New Year and am here to tell the tale. My BMI is 40, I have diabetes, and am 57 - presumably that means a lot older than you, as you have a young child.

I looked up my risk factors at the time. Risk of hospitalisation: 1 in 570 (yours will be a lot less). Risk of death: 1in 2,800 (yours will be a lot less).

And that’s if you catch Covid - the chance your son will catch it is low, and it is far from certain you would catch it from him if he did.

So really, OP, the risk of you catching Covid from your son, becoming severely ill, and then dying, is very very very very tiny. Minuscule. You are more likely to win the lottery - buy a ticket now! And see if you can get some help for your anxiety.
