No thyroid/pregnancy - vaccine?

Leafy2018 · 10/03/2021 18:42

I'm 19 weeks pregnant, 36, don't have a thyroid due to removal several years ago. Today I had a text to ask me to book my vaccine.

I'd love to have my vaccine - I worry hugely about being severely unwell with it due to my pregnancy and my children being at school so the risk of them bringing it home. But is being euthyroid putting me at higher risk? And if so, does the risk of Covid outweigh the risk of having the vaccine whilst pregnant?

I did once have the flu vaccine and ended up with actually flu for three weeks (I understand this is more likely coincidence - as vaccines aren't live) - but I've had it since and been fine.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. X

I had my thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer in my 20s and have had the vaccine, but I’m also asthmatic, so wasn’t sure which reason it was! I would probably speak to your doctor for advice? I didn’t think they were routinely offering Covid jabs to people who are pregnant? (Could be wrong!)

I had my thyroid removed some years ago and my jab recently. All fine. Just minor side effects the next day but fine thereafter.
Don't know about the pregnancy part though.

Thanks both. I would absolutely take it now if I wasn't pregnant. @Eaumyword did you get clarification as to whether you were considered more at risk with not having a thyroid? I haven't read about that being the case but maybe it's just anyone with a long term condition that they take medication for?

Hi Leafy. No, my thyroid or lack of wasn't an issue for the vaccination. I think the reasoning is that our medication isn't immune suppressing unlike some other autoimmune conditions that were on the at risk list.
I was quite worried previously about that side of things and would it affect my now well managed Levothyroxine medication regime.
I can confirm certainly for me, all is perfectly fine and there has been no issue with interference with meds. I feel really, really well and calmer now I've had the jab for sure!
There were some helpful threads in Jan/Feb on here about similar thyroid worries and whether it might disrupt medications or cause flare ups and the consensus was that it would be ok.
I really hope that helps to reassure you a little Flowers

Hi @Eaumyword

Thank you so much for your helpful reply. I've just spoken to my doctors surgery and the receptionist said they'd had many pregnant women coming for their vaccine if they were called. I'll speak with my GP about it and make a decision. I know I'd feel a lot calmer if I had it too. As long as worry about Covid wasn't replaced with worry over causing harm to the baby.

Glad to hear it hadn't affected your thyroid management though.

Thanks for the reassurance xx
