Lockdown is over

So I have spent most of the last few months sitting in my tiny loft room working away on my laptop all week and then the weekends trying to entertain a bored toddler in the house or parks in our vicinity.
Today I had a day off and thought I'd go wild now case numbers are down and drive 7 miles to meet my friend for coffee near hers. I encountered really heavy traffic both there and back and loads of people around generally. Stopped at the garden centre and everyone was just milling around like the olden days.

Everyone has quit lockdown and nobody told me! 😂 feel like a bit of a mug

Yes it’s been over for a few weeks dear.

Kellen · 10/03/2021 15:33

Sounds like everyone was just doing what you were doing. Hope you had a nice time! Smile

I had a great time! No judgement but I'm now thinking everyone's been doing this for weeks without me knowing.... Or maybe everyone did the same as me and sacked it off on the same day 😃

Traffic here has been the same throughout lockdown because people are going to work and the number of people about dependent upon the weather. Have seen few obviously breaking the law. Driving to exercise has always been allowed.

Bordois · 10/03/2021 15:43

Well, yes. You've been able to meet up with another person outside since Monday so it stands to reason that there will be people doing that, the same as you have.

notrub · 10/03/2021 15:43

"Today I had a day off and thought I'd go wild now case numbers are down "

What, in the hope you can help drive them back up again??

ps I think you were being sarcastic...

Lots of people though genuinely think this.

Yeah OP driving seven miles to meet her friend is going to cause a massive spike of infections Hmm
Onedaysomedaynowadays · 10/03/2021 15:48

Yeah pretty sarcastic. I'm not sure a coffee with a friend and picking up some bulbs from the garden centre counts as wild but it felt pretty crazy to me after living under virtual house arrest for so long 😂

My swimming pool is still shut -- nobody told them they could open.
I still have to mask up in indoor spaces -- nobody said I could stop.
Big plexiglass everywhere in the corner shop & post office -- nobody said it could come down.
My son isn't allowed in school (until tomorrow)
DS still has to mask up all day in school & on the train
My office still locks me out
Uni age DD can't legally travel back to visit even if she wants to (she wanted to last weekend)
Still illegal to go on holiday
People from red list countries still have to pay £2k for hotel quarantine
Shop after shop is still closed in town
DH isn't allowed to legally visit his elderly parents
Care home visits just started again, and look like this ^

It's very weird indeed how "Everyone" also hasn't found out what OP is sure she discovered for absolute certain today about Lockdown being over with.

Lockdown is over
MsFogi · 10/03/2021 15:58

This lockdown never really happed - everyone has just got on with their lives but without the shops etc open as far as I can see.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 10/03/2021 16:02

Where we are secondary schools are gradually opening however students only go in after a negative LFT carried out in school. This means it's pretty much one student per car to get to school for that first test (as year groups are tested together) whilst this happens so certainly here, that's s going to account for a spike I traffic. Once all are tested next week it's all on the bus as usual so I'm guessing much of that traffic will be out of the picture.

That's what it looked like today 🤷

I’m still in lockdown !
Well I hope when things don’t get lifted your all happy 😊
What’s the point of going out when nothing is open ?
Traffic is increasing because people have to go work or school ect .
We have literally been living like this for ages what’s a few more months to make it safe to open up ?
I think it’s people that have been vaccinated that feel they can do as they like and there on but that’s not the case really x

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/03/2021 16:08

I don't feel like it's over. Nothing fun is open.

DianaT1969 · 10/03/2021 16:10

All non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, beauty salons, restaurants, pubs and coffee shops are still closed.
So I'm not sure why you're saying lockdown is over?
Unless driving a few miles for exercise with a friend and a takeaway coffee is your idea of a good time and normal life?

llijkk - just wanted to say in case you didn't know and it's still helpful for you and DD - she can travel there and back (or from there and back, depending where she is, if that makes sense) as of Monday in you're in England - students can go home.

Sorry if you already knew or that doesn't apply, but it's cheered me a lot this week!

HereComesATractor · 10/03/2021 16:11

Remember that many children have been back in school this week, especially since their covid tests have been done, so it may be the first time many people have been able to do things like go out for a coffee or to the garden centre where in previous weeks they were homeschooling. So it’s coincidental that you chose the same week/day, but it may not have been as busy previously

lljkk · 10/03/2021 16:13

Thanks Merrick :)

Pastanred · 10/03/2021 16:13

I agree

I’ve worked throughout
Met friends inside and out
Been to family and friends for tea
Kids played out daily since Xmas

So has everyone I know 🤷‍♀️

And no one I know has had covid since the first wave and most people I know are tested in work weekly so can be pretty sure we’ve not been transmitting it

People who’ve been sat at home for months are indeed the definition of mugs

EvilOnion · 10/03/2021 16:20

"I think it’s people that have been vaccinated that feel they can do as they like"

I've been vaccinated and tend to agree that lots do have this attitude, I heard a woman at school yesterday saying she was glad to be rid of her mask as she chuckled it in the bin because she was "away for her second Jag" 🤦‍♀️, but there are many, many people who disagree with lockdown as a whole.

I probably go out more than I should be doing but I don't do anything with anyone - we've worked the whole way through so thankfully we've had some sort of normality but I can understand why people need some normality now.

As long as they're not in massive gatherings or parties (which it doesn't sound like OP was) who really cares at this point?!

unfortunateevents · 10/03/2021 16:26

Well, people will have been doing the same as you and thinking that a trip to meet a friend or pick up something in the garden centre won't hurt so not sure why you were surprised that traffic was heavier! Also, now that schools have reopened there is going to be more traffic with pick up and drop off and more parents driving students rather than have them on public transport. Also some parents who have been wfh or furloughed mainly due to childcare will now be back in their office or visiting clients or whatever.

Lotusmonster · 10/03/2021 16:27

It was never government policy for you to stay in a loft room 11 hrs a day!

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 10/03/2021 16:31

Not In my house, we are caught up in the false positive saga.... the whole household having to self isolate and lose income needlessly. No one has covid, we have nothing to spread.

lljkk · 10/03/2021 16:41

@Pastanred, why do you think no one has reported all those people & yourself who ignored the laws & so on constantly? It feels like MN is full of people desperate to grass someone up. Do you think you were lucky?

I am pretty sure my cousins are socialising a lot more than the FAcebook suggests (they live somewhere that socialising is legal, mind). But they may have edited social media to minimise grief they get. They normally see each other indoors for hours many times every week, and still live near each other.

I got a snarky comment on Facebook for driving DC to the beach (5 miles away, a week after govt said we could drive to take exercise in May). I feel absolutely totally spied upon all the time.
