If you've had covid...taste and smell

I'd love to hear experiences from others-hoping there will be positives!
I had covid 5 months ago and my taste and smell have still not properly returned.
In the last week or so it's actually worsened again and a lot of things tasting and smelling rank. Like this really weird off cucumbery yoghurty fermented taste.

Has anyone had covid and subsequently disturbances in smell and taste for this long that have recovered? Thanks!

I had what I’m sure was covid in the first week of last April. I can’t be sure because you couldn’t get a test at that stage unless you were admitted to hospital, but I had all the symptoms including a long lasting fatigue and loss of smell. My sense of taste didn’t go but changed considerably. I am almost, but not quite, back to normal now. I used to use peppers in almost everything, but still can’t stand the smell or taste of them. Coffee was really unpleasant for a while but now smells reasonable and tastes almost normal. Similar issues with red wine. Bread tastes a bit weird. It’s slowly, slowly returning so I’m hoping it’ll all resolve in the end.

Thanks for sharing your experience @cardibach I really hope I reach more normality soon it's so annoying and bizarre what smells or tastes terrible and what's okay

I read a BBC article about this (or something that sounds very similar) the other week. It is called Parosmia

@bettyboo40 yes everything in that article is familiar to me. I wish they were able to say it will at some point return to normal!

Have a look at abscent.org
They will be able to offer support and also tell you how to do ‘smell training’ which I’ve used a bit and which does seem to have some effect.

My taste thankfully recovered but my sense of smell still isn't right! Some things smell completely different now. I had Covid nearly 4 months ago.

My family have all experienced the same @BourbonBiscuits20 a few months after covid we have a weird smell (differs for all) and lack of proper smell and taste. Hasn’t changed for me in 2 months now.

I had Covid last Easter, completely lost my sense of smell for a few weeks. It slowly came back but has never returned to previous full sense. I used to have a really sensitive sense of smell, now it's distinctly below par

cannaethink · 10/03/2021 16:52

I had covid last March and lost taste and smell for at least a month then it slowly came back. Then in August I noticed some things weren’t tasting or smelling right, and it hasn’t improved! For me, oranges, strawberries and coriander taste really chemically. And hummus and onions smell really bad, but taste ok. Oh and I can now only eat Lurpak butter as all the other ones taste mouldy, ffs, why couldn’t it have been a cheaper one!

BourbonBiscuits20 · 10/03/2021 18:56

I've had a look at the Abscent site and I'm going to try that!
Yes even what I can smell is extremely muted. I used to be obsessive smelling the clean washing to smell if it smells fresh and that's one thing that smells absolutely disgusting to me. It's annoying I can't even perform the sniff test to see if somethings just been washed!
