Blended learning worse than remote

In Scotland with 3 dc at secondary school and have just had communication from school on blended learning starting from next week.

Children will be in school one day a week (quarter of school in at one time so 2m distancing can be maintained). As teachers now teaching there won’t be any online classes, just work set for each class.

So less live learning than they’re currently getting. So disappointed, especially for those studying for national qualifications.

Blended learning had always been a suboptimal solution in my opinion. It's the worst of both worlds. I think they are better off all either in school full time or out of school full time.

katieloves · 08/03/2021 19:35

Is that that for all the years at secondary including exam years? Sounds absolutely appalling especially as motivation for home learning is at an all time low after this long.

Yellow85 · 08/03/2021 19:36

I can’t understand why they can’t just live stream classes with some in the room and some at home? Surely that makes more sense?! They obviously have laptops etc if they were previously doing remote lessons.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 08/03/2021 19:37

My ds had a mixture of live and pre recorded lessons he said there was no difference in the content and actually preferred the pre recorded to do at his own pace

helpfulperson · 08/03/2021 19:37

It's only for the two weeks until the holidays. The hope is that by the summer term everyone can be back in with no social distancing

katieloves · 08/03/2021 19:38

It’s actually made me feel quite angry. I think it shows no regard for the kids well-being or education whatsoever, it’s an absolute p* take. I’m so sorry for your dc.

I feel the same - all 3 in secondary school in Scotland, all in one day for 2 weeks then full time after Easter

What is the point of that?!

They are worried that they are going to be on their own in class 😥

It's being done alphabetically 4 says a week & extra day for practical work for exam years

I wish they'd all go back next week or just go back after Easter full time (what's the point of 2 days - then full time after Easter )
Actually how are the teachers meant to facilitate lessons in class & online at the same time??

rozzyraspberry · 08/03/2021 20:05

I agree Mrs Redfly - they’d be better off continuing with online learning until Easter, rather than one day in school and 4 days set work with no online classes.

Cases in our area are now less than 40 per 100,000 so lower than many areas back full-time 😭

@rozzyraspberry @MrsRedFly do you mind saying which LA you are in. Our school is hopeless at communication so we have not heard yet, just wondering if it is a Scotland wide thing or they are leaving it to individual LA / Schools

rozzyraspberry · 08/03/2021 20:45

We’re in fife - I think it’s being left to the school/LA how to apply the blended learning.

It is crazy, it would be so much better to leave them doing full remote learning then go back after Easter. It is going tobe much more disruptive doing 1 day in and the the rest of teh days at home without any live input

Woolff · 08/03/2021 21:16

they’d be better off continuing with online learning until Easter,

Why would some face to face teaching be detrimental?

If independent work is set after specific targeted input, they should be able to do it independently. That's still learning, even if their teacher is with another group.

ChameleonClara · 08/03/2021 21:22

I think it will be better for mental health than 100% online.

rainbowunicorn · 08/03/2021 22:01

The face to face learning so far in our school has meant them going in for practical subjects that need to be done in school. They do this one day a week. During this time in school they miss all the input from the other subjects and have to try and catch that up without the advantage of having the subject teacher available for the duration of the lesson. This means that if they are unsure or need further explanation they are unable to get it until the next time they have online input from that teacher.
The experience of others may be better but our shool is utterly dire in this respect.

MrsRedFly · 08/03/2021 22:02

Fife as well!
I've one that's been in to do some N5 art!

KatySun · 08/03/2021 22:12

My DD went in this morning for a practical class. She was ill with a migraine at the weekend but determined not to miss her chance to go in. I am quite glad she is getting the chance to go in again in the last couple of weeks of term, to be honest, rather than staying fully online. They need to see people.

School lessons stopped being lectures delivered from the blackboard about 40 years ago. That's why.
MrsRedFly · 08/03/2021 22:38

The problem is there'll be hardly anyone in school - maybe not their friends as it's done in alphabetical order
