Will second vaccine by the same one?

I had the Pfizer one a couple of weeks but I hear there is a shortage of these now. So it is some weeks off but wonder if anyone knowledgeable knows if vaccines are mixed in terms of first and second dose?

Not at the moment no. I believe it’s being trialled.

Yellow85 · 08/03/2021 14:15

The 2 vaccines will be the same. Scientifically they work differently to each other so you’ll get Pfizer again. I assume they’d prioritise second doses if supplies are low.

LemonTT · 08/03/2021 14:16

There’s matched stock held back to do second doses. Obviously not indefinitely especially with Pfizer.

theonlywayisup33 · 08/03/2021 14:24

Ok thank you.
So second time around it will be different. This time, you just turned up and whichever one was in stock, you got it. But second time around, I guess there needs to be a question asked as to which one you had and therefore certain vaccination centres will have to have specific ones in store?
Does that sound right?

No at the moment they say you are guaranteed to get the same for 1st and 2nd doses, so they must be confident they have enough stock to do this with the Pfizer one.

murbblurb · 08/03/2021 15:13

' I hear,' - always babble. The Pfizer stocks are being husbanded to ensure everyone gets the same second dose, so lots more astra zeneca now.

Can anyone “ in the know” give any advice, I had my first back in January ( frontline ) from a company operating within the local GP surgery. They only vaccinate 2 or 3 days a week, so as can imagine they are way behind the main hubs.
My second is due no later than April 11 th have been in touch to see when and how the second rollout will take place. I have had politicians answer, basically they won’t be contacting anyone before April 9 th. I have a feeling many people are going to end up over the 12 week mark.
Am I able to book my second vaccine at an actual nhs hub? The woman I spoke to said not , but with her vaqueness I do know if I believe her.
Anybody able to shed light?

murbblurb · 08/03/2021 16:12

how about trying to book it on the NHS site? Just needs your NHS number. Worth a go?

Cazz246 · 08/03/2021 17:35

The nhs site only gives option to book both 🤷🏼‍♀️

murbblurb · 08/03/2021 19:01

Ah. that's a shame, it all looked to be working so well. Sorry!

There is another long thread running about the practicalities of the 2nd dose and dates etc. Have a look and see.

Several people in the know say that where people had their first via GP led services, those GP led services will have the same vacccine for supply later when required. Apparently they are asked to book people in for 77-84 days later. However, the 2nd dose is a booster, so it doesn’t actually matter if it happens a bit later. You’re right, some people will certainly miss the 12 week point, but apparently that’s not actually a big issue, but they do have stuff in place to ensure things do happen on time.

I guess it wouldn’t be great to be booked in a 2 week UK based holiday over that window of time, but they will have ways of managing that.

It is all planned and. It just left to chance. It’s a massive logistical exercise and it’s happening well and the next phases are planned for. From 15th the mass centres are expanding vastly as both 1st and 2nd doses are needed..and it’s all carefully husbanded for the 2nd dose so people get the right one.

Sometimes receptionists cannot tell you the detail of how it all works. They don’t know the answer to your question or they certainly do t know the big picture planning of it all.

WombatChocolate · 08/03/2021 19:13

And yes, the NHS booking system is different to that running through GPs.

If you book on the national system you book both at once. You’re likely to go to the mass centres. If you book via GP invitations (elderly, group 4, Group 6 and also then anyone remaining from other groups who hasn’t booked via the national service) you just book one and wait to hear about 2nd in majority of cases. You won’t book the 2nd via national system, but via same system as 1st.

The fact people who booked first via GP services doesn’t mean it’s not working. It is.

Thank you @WombatChocolate

You need to go back to the centre you got your first vaccine at because they will have the correct amount of doses allocated to them based on who they did the first jab for. They will contact you nearer the time. Some are just allocating the same time and day of the week that you had first time. Obviously it can be changed if you absolutely can’t attend then. Some surgeries didn’t start until January so may not have decided yet. It’s possible they may send you a text and allow you to book yourself in. It’s quite a logistical problem for GPs. Much easier for large vaccination centres as they just have AZ so more straightforward!
