My little boy has had a runny nose and hoarse voice for a couple of days. No fever, he's coughed a couple of times but I wouldn't say he has a cough. I've woken up this morning with a really sore throat, banging head, stuffy nose and feel a bit nauseous. I've been tested just in case - but I'm interested to hear what other people had symptom wise the first day or two. Wondering what my chances are of it being covid really!

Far too much emphasis placed on fever and cough - in the young, these are quite rare.

You could have covid, but could equally well be a cold.

YukoandHiro · 08/03/2021 13:25

Get tested

PatsyStone39 · 08/03/2021 13:26

My son has a runny nose and cough but was very well in himself - eating, playing etc.

I only had a glassy sore throat for a few hours. I thought i had escaped my DS "cold" and ten days later woke feeling like my lungs had collapsed and ended up in hospital. I don't think there's much rhyme or reason to covid symptoms. Everyone seems to present so differently. It's hard to tell what's just a cold and what's the virus. Neither of us had a fever and I never had a cough.

I hope you're feeling better soon and that it's not CV!

GreenSlide · 08/03/2021 13:29

@PatsyStone39 blimey!! That's worrying. My throat feels shredded. Everything crossed it's just a cold - I have a few factors putting me in the CV category so have been hoping to swerve it!

Try not to worry. My story is quite rare. And i'm still here to tell the tale. ;) The chances are, if you do have it, that you'll breeze through it like you would any virus. Yeah, it's horrible to feel so ill, but rest up, and try to take your mind off it. Paracetamol and water was all my hospital consultant recommended. I was told to stay away from Ibuprofen, though i'm not sure if they are still advising folk this as I was ill last March.

MrsBennetsnerves · 08/03/2021 16:50

Sore throat and occasional shivery feelings were my first symptoms. I developed a fever plus a few other symptoms a couple of days later.

YukoandHiro · 09/03/2021 03:26

Have you taken a test OP?

okokok000 · 09/03/2021 04:07

I'd get tested OP. I started with a sore throat which got worse and slightly runny nose on 2 Feb. A few days later a little cough started so I booked a test.

4 days later things rapidly deteriorated and my high temperature started. I tested positive and am still ill.

If you do test positive, and I sincerely hope you do not, buy a pulse oximeter. I had one pre-covid anyway, but it has been invaluable and really helped with remote consults that have taken place over the past few weeks.

@YukoandHiro

Have you taken a test OP?
Yeah! Says in my OP I was tested yesterday. Results come back and it's negative Grin just a cold. thanks everyone!

So I've now lost my taste and smell and the infection seems to have moved into my chest, I'm getting a bit of a chesty cough and sore chest. I know this can happen with an ordinary cold but I'm starting to worry that I'm going about with my negative test result and unwittingly passing covid on? Not that I've been to many places but I did nip into Tesco yesterday. Is this even possible with a negative test result or am I being completely paranoid? Should I test again? Can I?

I’d call 119 and ask for advice re testing

MissSmiley · 10/03/2021 04:55

@GreenSlide I tested negative twice in the week before my positive

MissSmiley · 10/03/2021 04:57

@GreenSlide has your sense of smell gone completely (smell something really strong like essential oils to test) or just reduced because you're bunged up?

Worrywobbles · 10/03/2021 06:56

I would test again. Several of my colleagues had a negative test and a few days later a positive.

yearinyearout · 10/03/2021 07:06

Yes I would test again especially after the loss of taste and smell

Porcupineintherough · 10/03/2021 07:48

Test again. You wouldn't be the first person to get a negative swiftly followed by a positive.

GreenSlide · 10/03/2021 10:57

I've just stuck my nose in a tub of vicks to try this Grin and I could smell it so it's not gone completely. So maybe just cause I'm stuffy. My chest is a bit sore but that's not unusual with the cold either. I'm staying in just in case and I'll maybe test again tomorrow.

I’d test again too. Hope you feel better soon.
