AIBU to think I my get COVID twice

windywally · 07/03/2021 19:57

I had COVID 6 months ago and as a HCA I have to start weekly testing tomorrow, for some bizarre reason I am so stressed if I test positive, I have looked on line and I believe it is rare then others tell me it is common , has anyone been positive twice after 90 days

May get

Tbh you may well get it again as it’s a different strain going round now. I know five people (two families) with confirmed covid twice more than 6 months apart.

windywally · 07/03/2021 20:04

That's interesting, I didn't think about different strains

I work in a GP surgery and, while it is possible to get it twice, no-one I know of has

username892737473763636352 · 07/03/2021 20:19

Oh OP... everyone on Mumsnet has had covid at least twice and knows many people who have too. The same people who got covid even though they didn't leave their house.

Baileysforchristmas · 07/03/2021 20:26

Yes someone on here had it 3 times 😂 I think it’s possible but it’s rare, it’s funny how many people have had it twice, well I or most people I know haven’t even had it once.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 07/03/2021 20:28

That’s because most people who think they’ve had it twice I suspect were self-diagnosing the first time round. I know so many people who think they had it in 2019, long before it was even a thing. They wouldn’t have a clue if it was Covid or not!

findingschools4myboys · 07/03/2021 20:34

I have only heard of one person who thinks they had it twice out of over 100 people. (Not everyone I know personally)
I asked my gp too and he said he hasn’t seen any patients with it confirmed twice.
Not saying it can’t happen but seems to be rare. (I had chicken pox twice!)
My opinion is that if it was a common occurrence the government and mainstream media would be shouting it from the rooftops in order to make us more scared so we all follow the rules.

FlyingBurrito · 07/03/2021 20:34

Is an HCA something medical? if so I'm quite surprised that you aren't aware of the different variants and that while possible to get it twice it's not very likely.

I am smiling at @username892737473763636352 and @Baileysforchristmas , they are right everyone on MN and their family had covid in mid 2019 akthough strangely the variant that no reputable medical authority has been able to detect

username892737473763636352 · 07/03/2021 20:35

@OldScrappyAndHungry yes I know these people as well !

sunnydaleslayer · 07/03/2021 20:36

I was convinced I had it in April last year when routine testing wasn't available. I then tested positive in January 2021. Now less convinced I had it in April. It's very rare and the symptoms were different.

I think in a lot cases of people having it 'twice' I have found that most of them were not actually tested twice and just assumed before testing was widely available lax

username892737473763636352 · 07/03/2021 20:36

@findingschools4myboys it does seem rare and even in medical literature it's rare. But not on Mumsnet. On Mumsnet it's really common!

stayathomer · 07/03/2021 20:40

I had it last year and when I had it they'd found the first person to get it twice in china. I believe there's been a very small amount of cases, as in tiny

stayathomer · 07/03/2021 20:41

And sorry, I mean worldwide

HairyFloppins · 07/03/2021 20:41

Loads on mumsnet have. Knowing my luck I will get it again probably a different strain.

pestoplease · 07/03/2021 20:44

Haven't you had a vaccine? You'd be really unlucky to have had C19, had the vax then test positive.

LaMariposa · 07/03/2021 20:47

I had pneumonia and was very ill in March/April last year. With something unlike anything I’d had previously. I then tested positive for Covid at the end of October, with identical but milder symptoms. No pneumonia that time thankfully.
Coming up a year on I am nearly back to full health, still fatigued and occasionally breathless. I am dreading schools reopening and the prospect of having it again.

windywally · 07/03/2021 20:52

I start as a HCA tomorrow, so no I am not very knowledgeable I am aware of different variants however I still assumed after looking on line that having it twice is uncommon.
I am sure I will be gaining lots of knowledge over the coming weeks

OP posts:
windywally · 07/03/2021 20:53

Also I believe I will be having my vaccine this week

I have been told by medical staff at the hospital I have been attending that many of them have had it twice, and they were tested first time around as they were frontline nhs. I think the new variant increased the reinfection rate based on what they were saying. Maybe they are lying or mistaken, but I can’t see why they would be either really.

I suspect I have had it since I lost my sense of smell and nearly a year on it hasn’t recovered, even though it was pretty much my only symptom. But I have been advised by medics that even though it likely was Covid I shouldn’t assume I have any immunity. That isn’t the same as saying that people who have had it before won’t have some lingering immunity, just that we can’t assume it right now.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 09/03/2021 12:36

@Inkpaperstars I wouldn’t be surprised if NHS staff had been infected twice but for the general population it’s vanishingly unlikely. I’m
More thinking of people who had the flu or bad cold in November 2019 and have convinced themselves they had Covid Hmm.

I had the flu in 2018 with an awful cough - maybe that was Covid too Grin.

Inkpaperstars · 09/03/2021 14:57

Yes @OldScrappyAndHungry I know what you mean. It is of concern to me right now because I am nearly 36 weeks pregnant and they have suggested I get the vaccine now because I am regarded as vulnerable. I am in two minds as to whether to wait till after delivery so if I knew whether I had any lingering immunity it might help me decide, but I don’t think I am going to be able to predict that.

veryhungryhippo · 09/03/2021 15:24

Ok I'm gonna pop up like a twit and say yes I've had it twice. Both times confirmed with a positive test, about 9 months apart. Just getting over the second lot. I do go out but not for work. Probably caught it through the kids and my partner who works emergency services. Had it fairly mildly both times. Second time I had slightly different symptoms and lost my sense of smell which didn't happen first time so maybe the second infection was a variant. I don't know why people would be surprised at catching it twice though, there are other viruses that you can catch more than once aren't there? Like flu and colds? Is this not gonna be the same kind of thing where we just have to manage with it?
