Anyone young(ish) and healthy but been invited to book vaccination?

Just wondering why it might be - I am assuming it's to do with local population demographics.

Dh (51) had his last week. Assumed it may have been his gp playing it safe as he was in hospital recently with acute pancreatitis which ended up trapping his bowel. He's fine now again, but just thought he might be more vulnerable than a fit, health younger person.

Anyway, I'm 42, no health concerns at all and am absolutely delighted but totally bemused to have been called by the gp to have mine. I'm booked for Weds.

We live on the commuter belt in Eastern England and the local population is predomimantly younger families, so could they simply have done all the more deserving cases first? I'm finding quite a lot of vaccine envy when I talk about it to people, a lot of "how come?" and "did you get asked to book?" like I've found a way of cheating the system! I feel like I have to justify myself and have now decided to just keep quiet and day nothing. I do understand the vaccine envy when those more deserving are still waiting, but just wondered if anyone knows why people like me are being called already when officially they've only just extended to 56+.

I dont get why you or anyone else needs to be telling everyone they are having the vaccine..I am 28 and had mine last week..no one knows apart from who I live with because I havent mentioned it, why would I? same as people posting on social media "just had my vaccine #soblessed' I dont understand it.

But in regards to your first question, no idea why you've been offered it. Maybe they've just started on the over 40s in your area ?

I should imagine for the same reason anyone shares any good news with friends and family (not "everyone") @Kittykat93

Not me but judging by previous threads on this question loads of people have.

The extension to 56 doesn't mean that no centre in the country is already below that age, it just means that group can now choose to book themselves if they want to.

Did you have any conditions at all in childhood? This happened to me recently, almost 40 and healthy but used to have a condition as a child that no longer effects me. I think some gp's flag up anything on your record even if it's from a very long time ago. I didn't question it, had my jab on Friday and feel fortunate.

It’s a mass vaccination programme. Some people are going to get called early. Just keep quiet about it if it’s bothering other people.

A couple of my friends in their 30s and 40s have. I have mixed feelings about people posting it on FB if I'm honest. Happy for them and understand it's not anything they did to jump the queue or anything like that. Can't help feeling envious thinking they'll get to feel safer and I'm probably having to wait many more weeks for mine though, especially as I'm going to have to start using public transport in London again from mid April.

Kittykat93 · 07/03/2021 13:00

I dont understand the envy though...I've had my vaccination and I'm in my 20s but that's because I have a serious medical condition..not really something to be envious of just because I've had the vaccine before someone who's 50 for example. Everyone wants the vaccine obviously, but to feel jealous of people who have had it before them is just strange.

DinosaurDiana · 07/03/2021 13:05

I suppose it depends upon what sort of person you are.
To me, jumping up and down on social media looks like bragging. To younger people who post everything, it’s just normal to them.

I know someone whose son is 16, with mild-moderare asthma (no hospital admissions) and they were vaccinated a couple of weeks ago. That seems odd to me? Is childhood asthma
or mild/moderate asthma now on the list of conditions?

nordica · 07/03/2021 13:40

Kittykat the envy is not about the clinically vulnerable getting theirs, of course they should come first. But then a healthy friend in their 30s posts about not even knowing why they've been invited, it's hard not to feel like it's a bit of a lottery and they've got the lucky ticket.
