My dd (12) has covid toe!

She had no symptoms of Covid, ever. Not even a cold since last winter. It's affecting three toes at the moment, she says they're very painful, doesn't want to wear shoes. Not sure how we're going to cope on Monday!

Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it last? How did you treat it? GP just suggested paracetamol.

How do you know it's Covid toe?

HelenDrinkwater · 06/03/2021 12:15

GP diagnosed it. He's seen three children (8-13) in the past week with almost identical presenting toes. I assumed the first one was a corn, despite her not wearing shoes for what seems like months, so I put a corn plaster on it. Then another toe became red and swollen so I contacted the GP. Now she has three.

My husband has had it (them!) for 10 months now since covid! At the time he had a bad cold then the toes came on after that. He has them on both feet and has tried everything he can think of but nothing seems to help. They get hot / painful / swollen and purple / red in colour. They make running etc impossible for him now. I can sympathise with your daughter. GP has offered some cream but it hasn’t helped. They just say they don’t know what covid toe is so there’s no cure (yet)

With genuine due respect to the Dr, I’d suggest you take her to see a podiatrist on the off chance it’s a misdiagnosis. It could be some other affliction of the foot, and if so it might be more treatable.

HelenDrinkwater · 06/03/2021 12:30

I hear what you're saying @user143677433 but the coincidences are too great and it seems like it really is a thing...

has she had a covid test

DownWhichOfLate · 06/03/2021 12:34

If she’s got Covid she won’t be at school on Monday so no need to worry about shoes!

icantthinkofanamehelp · 06/03/2021 12:35

If she's got covid why are you thinking of sending her Monday

JeannieTheZebra · 06/03/2021 12:39

“Covid toe” isn’t acute, infectious covid so she should be able to go to school. It’s more like “long covid”; for some people the inflamed toes are lasting for months. It’s another weird long term symptom of a disease we don’t really understand yet.

HelenDrinkwater · 06/03/2021 12:39

Covid toe isn't Covid. She doesn't have Covid. Negative test on Wednesday.

She needs a covid test to rule out of she is positive or not still. She has one of they lesser know symptoms. She needs to isolate until the results come in as does your household. Might be worth the rest of the household getting tested too. Lateral flow tests seem to be readily available now.

Trumplosttheelection · 06/03/2021 12:41

Covid toe follows covid infection. A negative test is not an absolute. You need to test at the right point or you can miss it, also depends on the sample taken and the skill of the tester. I would isolate ten days from first toe symptom tbh

homesickinscotland · 06/03/2021 12:41

Are you sure it's not just chilblains?

nordica · 06/03/2021 12:47

I've had something like this on and off for about a year now and I do wonder if it's covid related or just chilblains. I never had chilblains before though, this started early 2020. Never had typical covid symptoms but had a few days of strange symptoms and feeling quite ill just before Xmas 2019. I'm in London so I guess it's possible I had a mild case of covid.

Otherwise I guess just treat like chilblains. Mine do improve after a week or so but they keep coming back. I haven't spoken to a doctor about it.

HSHorror · 06/03/2021 12:57

Chilblains are from heating up quickly from being cold.
So could have come on after being out in the snow.
I also had worse after wearing socks in bed.

Abraxan · 06/03/2021 13:02

I assume they don't do an antibodies test to see if she is likely to have had covid.

I guess it's like people can be diagnosed with long covid without having had a positive test previously.

Retrievemysanity · 06/03/2021 13:03

My friend’s son had this recently. The doctor said it could be chilblains or covid toe. I think he was given some antibiotic cream. They looked bad for a good 3-4 weeks and he complained about shoes hurting him too.

HelenDrinkwater · 06/03/2021 13:20

No, no antibody test. And no opportunity for chilblains to develop. She hasn't been outside for weeks! And doesn't wear socks in bed. Bonkers! I think I may have had covid in March last year. She hasn't had any symptoms at all.

Covid toe and chilblains look identical and all it takes to get chilblains can be walking on a cold floor.

Petrarkanian · 06/03/2021 13:23

My friends daughter has this. GP reckons its from Covid in December.
It's moved to her fingers now.

OverTheRubicon · 06/03/2021 13:23

Exactly.

You know neither of those things are required for chilblains, right?

icantthinkofanamehelp · 06/03/2021 13:28

Why hasn't she been outside for weeks ?
That's not good for her at all

Don't take her to see a podiatrist If she has Covid!!!. Blooming hell . At least wait until the quarantine period is over first or until you have a negative test Have you done a test op? She shouldn't be in school next week until you have a negative test back if your GP thinks it is Covid

Maybe also ask the school if someone could drop one of the lateral tests at your home ..explain why and see if it positive
