Yet another variant. Cases falling at a much slower pace and rising in 1/5 of the country. Feel like I'm stuck in mud. This month was meant to be so special for me and my family but instead just more of the same. Feel devoid of hope.

Where are you reading this?

I never post in this topic, but felt compelled to after your post...
It is the last day of home schooling. Today is a good day.

Presumably this report -

www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/health-56284155

But mutations and variants are to be expected with this and other viruses. This one is not a 'variant of concern at present, but is a 'variant under investigation'.

The UK now has 8 variants on its watch list - 4 VUIs and 4 VOCs.

toomanyspiderplants · 05/03/2021 07:13

cases are falling, deaths are falling, hospital admissions falling, vacinations rising , spring is coming. what's not to hope for

How can I get on with my life when I can't go anywhere or see anyone?

We are on our way out of lockdown. We're all feeling this. It's not too long to wait.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 05/03/2021 07:29

@RosieLemonade you will just have to do what you can as outlined in the steps out of lockdown , just like everyone else.

I can understand your negativity but there will always be variants, forever .
The media has been terrible throughout this and best ignored.

ThornAmongstRoses · 05/03/2021 07:33

I really wish they would stop announcing every new variant - what are they hoping to achieve by it?

More scaring us into submission?

Variants will be here forever....we don’t need to know every time they find another one.

Agree with this!
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 05/03/2021 07:41

Agreed. It's just scare mongering. How many people would have their wisdom teeth out if the headlines screamed out YOU COULD DIE UNDER ANAESTHETIC. Because you could you know . It's on that form they get you to sign before a procedure. We all know the chances are tiny, and then you get those teeth pulled out

Sometimes you just need to turn a blind eye to scientists, it's their job to think of worst case scenarios, the media dont need to share everything

Yep - scaring in to submission I think. Or trying to - more people seem to be wise to it now.

If this experience makes the population more suspicious of what they read in the papers, that’ll be a good outcome.

Thimbleberries · 05/03/2021 07:55

I want to know when they find the variants with the E484K mutation, as that is the one that is most concerning regarding vaccines, and if it makes people take more care when one of those has been found, then I think that is good. I don't think they report many of the variations that are found, if they are rare or not thought to be significant. The latest one that is being investigated does have that mutation, and I suspect will end up being one 'of concern' - but hopefully not spreading. As long as we keep on top of those particular ones spreading, until we can get cases down low enough to trace people properly, we will then be able to unlock a bit until the point that the new boosters are ready. But the next couple of months I think are still a relatively dangerous time - if we are lucky, and all goes well with vaccines and none of the mutations with this variant end up spreading, great. Or if there are no new variants with mutations in the area targeted by vaccines, also great. But it is a risky time, and it wouldn't take all that much for it to go pear shaped. So I am happy with variants being reported if it helps people remember to be careful for a bit longer. If people understand what the variants are, and how some are more dangerous than others and how they might affect the vaccines, then they will be worried. A lot of people don't necessarily know how the vaccine works or what part of the virus is targeted, though, so the variants don't sound worrying.

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/03/2021 07:58

Wasn’t there an article where a scientist said we need to stop talking about variants? I’ll armit I didn’t read it as I just nodded at it and skimmed past, but I do think the variant concern is being covered by the booster they plan on giving yearly, so I wouldn’t get too hung up about that.

I am much more worried about climate change and the propensity of that fucking up my kids lives than I am this pandemic. That’s the thing that really stops me from sleeping at 3 am.

MarcelineMissouri · 05/03/2021 08:03

@justanotherneighinparadise yes, Professor Andrew Pollard from the Oxford vaccine group said it. I also think he’s absolutely right and I think the press need to stop jumping all over new variants.

Agree with this too. It's the nature of a virus to mutate. I honestly don't see any benefit to drip feed this frankly damaging information to the public.

OP on Monday we'll be starting to move forward. Then just five weeks later on 12th April most things will open up on some level. We really are on the home straight now.

Delatron · 05/03/2021 08:15

What this pandemic has shown is that what we read in the media is generally what the government wants us to hear.
We are being manipulated by the media daily. So either ignore it or take it with a pinch of salt.

I personally hunt down scientific papers, latest research and articles like the linked one above. I check vaccinations figures, hospital cases and admissions.

At the moment the government need us to comply with restrictions for more months when many have had enough (and can see how well the vaccination program is going). We can also see that in other countries households mixing is allowed yet we can’t see friends and family for months more. People are getting complacent so they will ramp up the fear message. Watch out for a very worrying mutant strain before the Easter holidays...

In my town (and many others) there’s currently less than 3 cases. Yes still this lockdown continues for months with all the damaging effects

lightand · 05/03/2021 08:25

When the roadmap came out, there were many threads of happy people. There were also some posters who said caution was needed.

Some people think there are always going to be variants[I started a thread on the subject].

Never lose hope though[I am a Christian, we are taught to never ever lose hope].

manicinsomniac · 05/03/2021 08:31

Really? I feel more hopeful than I have in a long time.

I'm not an avid news watcher at all but I do obsessively watch the Covid stats on the WHO page. Our numbers seem to be falling fast - by around 5000 a week although naturally that will stall and start to increase as we open up. And deaths are down and vaccinations are up. There's every reason to feel positive and hopeful. I'm sure the bad news and worries can be found too if you look for them but, right now, I'm trying not to.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/03/2021 08:43

There are variants with all viruses. The media just make it into something scary when it really isn't, it's normal.

toomanyspiderplants · 05/03/2021 09:23

It's perfectly possible for the virus to mutate into a milder form.

RoseWineTime · 05/03/2021 09:31

Cases are falling sharply still - the Imperial React study is out of date. The current vaccines deal with our current predominant strains and new booster shots are being developed which will be fast tracked through the approval process. I’m feeling very optimistic at the moment!
