Hi all

We are all booked for a holidays in July to a non red list country. I am all confused about testing rules and quarantine. It is aimed that all restrictions will be lifted by 21 June. Does this mean masks and travel testing and quarantine will also be done with.

I got cheap fully refundable tickets, so I am not very worried about losing money but should I be getting ready for cancellation or excited for the trip?

I know no one knows for sure but what are ur best guesses.

@digitaldays In our case this was a trip booked a year ago for an event. We had to move it from last year to this year. I think many people are in a similar situations where holidays have been postponed and moved forwards...and may be moved forwards again. It’s happening with UK holidays as well as overseas holidays.

I probably wouldn’t be booking an overseas holiday now if what I was wanting was a week on a beach but when it is an event / holiday that has been postponed from last year and money is tied up in it, or people want to see their family who live abroad I can totally understand why people are keen to fly.

Can you not just wait a bit longer until the situation is clearer?

I'm not waiting any longer than we have to, when the borders are open, I'm out of here, done my bit!

Thirtyrock39 · 05/03/2021 08:48

I'm fed up with it all already. It was so stressful last year as they kept changing the dates when flights would resume . We ended up pushing our Greek holiday to this year in about June- at that point the holiday was still technically going ahead but we decided it was to risky and we're worried about it not being like 'normal' - there were rumours about them limiting numbers of the beach/ pool etc - and in the end our flights would've been cancelled anyway but I hated not being able to plan and not knowing and by then all uk holiday accommodation was pretty much booked up . I don't feel particularly great about going abroad this year tbh but rest of family desperate to go

@digitaldays

I can't believe so many people contemplating foreign travel just now! There are so many unknowns and uncertainties at present. I am very positive about the vaccines, it was the foreign travel, mainly from European ski resorts that brought Covid to our shores last year, and the unscientific lifting of travel restrictions last summer that contributed heavily to the second wave. Why book just now? That feels irresponsible. Can you not just wait a bit longer until the situation is clearer?
For some of us it’s not a priority to go to the pub or get out hair done. In fact going abroad might be more secured that going to the pub around the corner with 6 friends.

Bored of these mantra of “those that travel are irresponsible ones”.

EasterIssland · 05/03/2021 08:53

@bevelino some countries won’t require anything below and age (I.e Spain doesn’t ask for pcr below 6 years ) and some countries will ask for a pcr of the child

Who has mentioned pub or hair?

But foreign travel has been hugely by far the main cause of the virus travelling. The Kent variant is now prolific in many countries, as is the South African variant, and the Brazil one too. In the case of the Brazil variant being detected in Scotland recently, they have still not been able to trace at least 30 travellers that were on the same flight. Shambles!
People are looking for loopholes to avoid quarantine as well.

New Zealand has the right idea. They stopped foreign travel a year ago. Result? 26 deaths in the entire duration of the pandemic to date.

Uk? 124K and counting. Sorry but it is very clear to me that travelling spreads the virus.

The vaccination programme is very successful and I predict better days ahead, but to prioritise foreign travel for leisure purposes until we get more clarity is simply selfish.

I too have a holiday that I had booked for last year that I had changed to this year. I am waiting patiently for the travel company to cancel this. I have no desire to travel abroad this year ( I've had both my vaccines as well, so technically might be a safer bet).

That's your choice, I personally will be on a plane as soon as allowed, vaccine or not. Plenty of people's livelihoods in this country and abroad rest on the international tourism industry restarting, just because you aren't comfortable doing something doesn't mean we should force everyone to feel the same way.

This. Please stop blaming those that will travel safely ... we might take more care in not bringing a virus to this country than the way many people behave inside the country.

Ps. Iceland has never closed their borders 29 deaths.
Usa close their borders 533k deaths.

JackRussellJacket · 05/03/2021 10:50

@Thirtyrock39 I feel your pain. The uncertainty is difficult to cope with.

I have worked throughout this pandemic. Have followed the rules throughout. I don’t think it is selfish to want a holiday or city break somewhere if borders are opened. Not as if I’m planning to travel the world. It’s merely a city break for a weekend! I’ll be following the rules wherever I go too.

I guess that means that all of your family are in the UK then?

Not all travel is for holidays.

I would like to see my children and grandchildren - it's been over a year. My OH would like to see his mum. Again, it's been over a year.

As soon as it is feasible I will be on a plane.

user88899 · 05/03/2021 13:58

Travelling spreads the virus.

Captain Obvious with the mic drop. If only we had an international vaccine effort with extremely promising data in front of us. Oh wait.

EasterIssland · 05/03/2021 13:59

@alliswellnow

Travelling spreads the virus.
Going to the pub spreads the virus Going to the cafe spreads the virus Going to the school spreads the virus Going to the work spreads the virus Meeting with friends spreads the virus Meeting with family spreads the virus Christmas spreads the virus Going to the hospital spreads the virus Going to the supermarket spreads the virus Going in public transport spreads the virus Celebrating bbq spreads the virus Celebrating birthdays spreads the virus Not following the rules spreads the virus

I've seen all the above in the last year... and yet the only thing that spreads the virus is traveling? I'll be on a plane to see my family who I've not seen for over a year as soon as I can. you can stay in the UK in the meantime.

Not sure which is the point of coming to a thread where there is people that want to travel just to tell them how irresponsible they're.
