Self catering to see family?

Nextyearwillbefun · 03/03/2021 22:06

We havent seen our families for a long time. Some over a year. So after 12th April self catering opens but not hotels. Am I right to think we can travel to see them 4 hours away and stay in self catering and see them outside ? Theres no mixing indoors yet right? All had vaccinations. Just really want to see my parents even if cant stay with them. They want us to go stay. DH says we shouldn't bother and just wait until may/june half term....

Yes. From 12 April you can stay overnight in self-contained accommodation and two households can mix outside (or up to 6 people from any number of households).

Yes, we've booked an airbnb near my partners parents. I'm also going to stay in the airbnb my parents have, above their garage. Can then see them in their garden.

Thanks, I know it will still be rubbish as not in houses etc but to just go for a walk/see them in garden would be great!

Yes you can do that :)

happytoday73 · 04/03/2021 07:10

Don't forget that only the first date of the road map is set in stone... The others are the earliest dates they will open up.. So it might be 12th April but it could be later....

rookiemere · 04/03/2021 07:20

Oh I thought it included hotels. Does that mean Premier Inns won't be open?

BrianWankum · 04/03/2021 07:23

Yes, I did this last summer. Have annoyingly booked the 'wrong' week off work during the Easter holidays, or I'd be straight back to see them on 12/4!

Scarby9 · 04/03/2021 07:25

Book now!

My brother and wife (5.5 hours away) are doing this the last weekend of April in order to see our parents.

They looked for cottages for 2 in the area after the Roadmap was announced. 30 were available. By the time they booked on Tuesday, there were only 9 left.

Praying for decent weather since the meet-ups will obviously still be outside.

Scarby9 · 04/03/2021 07:28

Oh, and also obviously, praying the roadmap goes to plan so the visit can happen.

We also have an apartment with the same company which is now on its sixth rebooked date (Christmas 2021...).

HolmeH · 04/03/2021 08:39

We are doing this but have booked 26th April in case of any delays 🙈 couple weeks buffer! You can go into gardens up to 6 or two households of any size, so we’ll be setting up camp! & hopefully going to some nice local parks & the beach! Probably rain all week 😬😂

Yes we are taking our caravan to a site fairly near DS and will meet him for days out in April

I think it does include hotels. When the "self contained only" thing was around last year, it did include hotels like Premier Inn as long as the breakfast room was closed.

My daughter works in a Premier Inn and they are accepting 'normal' bookings from 12th April onwards, whereas up til now they have been open for business guests only. (Although they aren't allowed to ask if it is a business stay when people check in!).

rookiemere · 04/03/2021 11:22

Oh phew @LucilleTheVampireBat I checked for proper self catering but anything decent was long gone.

Hotels don’t open until 17th May at the earliest
LucilleTheVampireBat · 04/03/2021 11:36

Yes, you are right, I have just checked the website.

They definitely aren't asking people to confirm the purpose of the stay though.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 04/03/2021 11:37

rookiemere I'm wrong, unfortunately.

At the risk of the usual pile-on, nobody is checking the purpose of the stay so personally I would just book anyway.

This applies to England, might be different in Scotland or Wales.
