Holiday booked for June...abroad

mamatocaptainchaos · 03/03/2021 13:02

What is the likelihood of this going ahead? Does anyone know? It's not a country which is on the red list or whatever it is called!

Two weeks away which I booked before all this happened! All paid off... unsure if we should pay to move it for next year or go ahead and risk it!

About 50:50. Depends where you are going. Even if travel ban is lifted there no guarantee U.K. citizens will be allowed in to wherever you are going, and still likely a 14 day quarantine on return, vaccination or not.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/03/2021 13:08

I put off an August break abroad until next year, but that’s because I don’t like uncertainty, and I knew UK breaks would be selling out.

Aposterhasnoname · 03/03/2021 13:10

I’m in the same boat, not sure what to do. I’m hoping they’ll be more clarity on the 12th of April, but if not then I think we’ll move it anyway, and if it turns out we can go abroad in June, book something last minute.

Delatron · 03/03/2021 13:14

Depends where I think.

There is talk of international travel from May 17th but that depends on quarantine situation here and other countries.

I think Spain and Greece are in talks with us at the moment for green corridors or vaccine passports. There are a few months for this to pan out. I agree it’s about 50:50. Depends whether you also want the risk of things changing whilst you’re out there.

MissCalamity · 03/03/2021 13:18

I've also got a holiday to Spain booked on the 2nd June (moved from last year)
I think it's just a case of waiting and seeing what happens, it would be nice to get away but you don't know how bad it will be abroad and if you have to quarantine.

I think we will probably get our money back rather than moving it again & then book when everything is "normal"

Swishswish26 · 03/03/2021 13:21

Will your travel company postpone it until next year for free? If not, hopefully they will refund you if it doesn’t go ahead. We are hoping to go abroad end of August but will book last minute if we are allowed but put the money towards next years if we’re not. Don’t want to spend thousands on a U.K. holiday. We spent the same on a week all inclusive in Greece last year as it would have cost for a week in a Haven caravan in Cornwall.

Smoothsoul · 03/03/2021 13:25

I have a holiday booked to Turkey for June 14th. It was moved from last year. I still owe a bit of a balance. I’m in an awful situation where they Weill ask me for the remainder of the month eg in April. If I pay it and the holiday goes ahead I can’t afford to go as not working/furloughed we can’t save up the spending money as well as pay the balance and I don’t want to take the risk of travelling anyway. If I don’t pay the balance they will cancel and I’ll loose 2k.
If I move it to next year I will need to pay even more money as both my children will be over 16 and i will need to pay adults prices that I wouldn’t have if we had went in 2020.
First choice have me over a barrel. I just want my money back that I’ve paid so far.

TheABC · 03/03/2021 13:26

It's very much "wait and see". Even if the UK Government flings open the travel doors in May, an uptick in cases in your country of choice could scupper everything.

On the bright side, popular holiday destinations such as Spain or Greece will want the tourists back as they contribute an enormous amount of business to the coastal regions. So, I can see vaccine corridors or some kind of reciprocal agreement being reached. If nothing else, the politicians would really like to holiday abroad too!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2021 13:27

I think it’s looking too soon.

FoonySpucker · 03/03/2021 13:28

Also worth being aware of what restrictions may be in place where you are going. The rest of the world isn't merrily carrying on as normal with no restrictions.

I am in France. We have a 6pm curfew, all bars and restaurants have been shut since the end of October and masks are compulsory everywhere outside i.e. from the moment you set foot outside your car in the supermarket ca rpark.

The curfew was supposed to prevent the need for another lockdown, but daily infection rates remain very high and there are rumblings that we may be heading for another one. Some areas with stubbornly high infection rates are already subject to enhanced measures.

Vaccinations are getting done, but nothing like as quickly as the UK have managed. The French are not the most pro-vaccine society so I would imagine that the proportion of residents vaccinated won't be high.

Kitkat151 · 03/03/2021 13:28

Depends what your expectation of the holiday is.....if you ok with , and prepared for, potentially needing a vaccine passport, PCR tests before you travel there and back, wearing masks in your holiday destination, social distancing in your holiday destination , extensive queuing in airports, quarantining or self isolating on return, mask wearing on flights......then do it.....if you wouldn’t be happy with this then move....it wouldn’t be for me.....but lots of people would be happy to go ahead on this basis.....depends what your outlook is

REPOSTED DUE TO AUTOCORRECTS;

I have a holiday booked to Turkey for June 14th. £3,500 for a beautiful hotel on the beach all inclusive for 2 adults and children who wee approaching 16 when I’d booked thinking it was a treat as maybe a last family holiday as teens may want to go with friends in future years. I had to move it from last year to this year. I still owe a bit of a balance (1.5k). I’m in an awful situation where they, first choice, will ask me for the remainder of the balance in April. If I pay it and the holiday goes ahead I can’t afford to go as not working/furloughed we can’t save up the spending money as well as pay the balance and I don’t want to take the risk of travelling anyway.

Lweji · 03/03/2021 13:31

You booked it February of 2020?

I wouldn't have booked or book any holidays more than a week in advance anywhere, let alone abroad, for a while. And I would only book anything if numbers of cases were consistently low.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 03/03/2021 13:32

I'm unlucky enough to have a "once in a lifetime" holiday due to depart on 17th May. Already changed from October 2020... it is giving me massive anxiety.

If I'd stood firm I would have received a refund when it didn't go ahead in October but I panicked and rescheduled. I really just want my money back now but I can change the dates up until 19th April so I'm just praying there's some definite answers from the global travel thing on 12th April and I'll make the decision then. Worse case scenario I'll reschedule again for 2022 but I'd much rather just have the money and rebook again at short notice if needs be.

Puddymuddle · 03/03/2021 13:33

We’ve also got June booked OP. France. I’m leaving it till nearer the time when we will know more. My travel company will let me swap to next year right up to 7 days before. I’m happy to wear masks and take a test each end and socially distance. The sticking point for me will be quarantine at either end. This will force us to cancel.
So I’m holding onto the booking in case we can go, know that realistically there is a strong chance of it being cancelled and for this reason the kids don’t know about it yet.

zafferana · 03/03/2021 13:35

If it's all inclusive why do you need lots of spending money @Smoothsoul? I don't do that sort of holiday, but I thought the whole point was that you don't need spending money, because it's all inclusive and so paid up front?

Smoothsoul · 03/03/2021 13:41

@zafferana
not really but just for shopping, and new clothes etc for going. Plus I don’t feel it’s sensible or safe to travel. My opinion I know others will go but I’d rather not.

Smoothsoul · 03/03/2021 13:43

@zafferana. And the additional costs of tests 4 x £100osh to go and come back plus possible quarantine (unpaid leave) from work. None of us will have had our jabs yet I don’t think.

zafferana · 03/03/2021 13:44

@Smoothsoul ah okay. Yeah, it's a difficult situation, to be sure. I think a lot of people have lost a lot of money through holidays that they just didn't want to go on any more, but couldn't find a way to a cancel and get their money back.

Kitkat151 · 03/03/2021 14:03

I would love to go to France this year.....too nervous to book anything tho because the levels remain high in France and can’t see their curfews being lifted anytime soon....I wouldn’t mind mask wearing or testing or social distancing but wouldn’t want to be confined to my accommodation after a certain time....hope it all works out for you.
IcedPurple · 03/03/2021 14:03

A lot can change in 3 months but June is a bit soon.

And even if you're able to go, would you be happy to spend your holiday with restrictions? Depending on the place - it's a pity you didn't say where you're going - that could mean masks outdoors, limited dining opportunities, maybe some attractions closed etc.

I definitely understand the need to have something to look forward to, but if it were me, I think I'd leave it a few months later when there's a better chance of being able to enjoy your holiday in full.

Scarlettpixie · 03/03/2021 14:04

We have a trip to spain booked in August which was moved from last year. I am now wondering whether to move it again to next year or to cancel and loose the deposit. The flight times aren’t as good in 2022! We have paid in full but should get the difference back if we cancel.

Not sure that we want to go this year (we were planning to go to theme parks, water parks and Barcelona all of which will either be closed, restricted or busy).

I hate all the uncertainty.

DavidsSchitt · 03/03/2021 14:10

@Smoothsoul so change it to next year.

What will the price difference be? When will you have to pay them any more money?

SlipperyLizard · 03/03/2021 14:18

We’ve got two weeks in Spain booked for the first two weeks of June. It is our last chance to go away for two weeks then (I’m not a sun lover so August would be too hot), but I really don’t know whether it will go ahead or what the experience will be like. I’m going to see how things look over the next few weeks - absolute worst case we lose the cost of the flights (c £700), if we can’t rearrange and need to cancel.

I hate the uncertainty!
