WFH if you can - training New staff

A and B both start new jobs during Covid (now). Both can wfh. A is asked to go into office on their first day and then asks to go in more often as is learning a lot and being trained. Social distancing takes place and A uses public transport to come in which is empty. Only their boss comes in at the same time.

B doesn’t have the option to do this but is furious at A for going in when they haven’t been able to meet their team in person and see anyone. B thinks that A is incredibly selfish for doing this and should be wfh.

A thinks that they are being sensible and don’t want to push back at their new company early on. Who is right?

I thought the whole point of the thread was that they had the same employers!
This is just a non issue
They should let each other be
Of course different employers will allow different things
Strange thread

MuddleMoo · 03/03/2021 10:18

That's why I asked, it wasn't clear from your first post. B needs to get over it they have different employers and sound jealous.

UmteenthUser · 03/03/2021 10:53

Different employers, different rules. Maybe this should have been in the OP

Womencanlift · 03/03/2021 11:02

Massive drip feed there. Different companies have different set ups. Different people have different requirements.

B needs to grow up and if they don’t like their job that’s their issue not A’s

BrimFullOfAsher · 03/03/2021 11:43

OK, how is this even a thread/question??

Different employers FFS, how is that even remotely comparable? Next we'll hear that it's not even a similar type of company and are in totally different sectors 🤦‍♂️

Which one are you OP? Surely not B? B wouldn't post this surely?

OrangeBananaFish · 03/03/2021 11:52

I'm going to be A next week except I will be driving in. Office based, but going into the office. Then again as I have school children I am going to be taking LFT regularly (as will DS and DD1 at their secondary school) also the office has a temp check upon entry.

I think B sounds jealous and petty TBH. B hates working from home and resents that they haven't had F2F training.

Sleepingdogs12 · 03/03/2021 20:48

This has turned into a different scenario from originally described. Sounds like B is fed up and made a throw away comment of 'don't tell me about it ' to a friend they know well expecting the friend to have some empathy for their circumstances but not expecting friend to be hurt or upset (or post on social media about it)

Both really, so many outbreaks in workplaces you shouldn't really be going in if you don't need to. New employees want to in order to show willing but shouldn't really be allowed if they can WFH. I've done a new job for a year and not gone in once but our employer is very strict. Some people like going in to boost their self importance, it's tedious and dangerous.

@Hellebored - get off your high horse. Some jobs require face to face training. I organise training for new starters as part of my job & some need to come & some don’t. We are covid safe, 90% of the office WFH so new starters coming in are not putting anyone at major risk. They meet the trainer & one member of their team (& me as their manager if it’s my day to be in). Once they’ve been trained, they can WFH. Those who can be trained remotely are. However, if any new starter is struggling or asks for face to face help, we will accommodate. It’s hard learning a new job at home, let alone not meeting anyone & having that rapport for support.

We’ve had no cases in our office since June 2020 so clearly, we are doing everything we can to mitigate risk & it’s working. & we are in Yorkshire where cases have been high all year.
