The UK is now running the fastest vaccination programme in the world

We have got a lot of things wrong but thanks to our scientists we are now leading on the way out of this

Matt Hancock's Commons statement to MPs

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, is making a statement to MPs about Covid.

He says today marks 12 weeks since Margaret Keenan became the first person in the world to receive a clinically approved vaccine.

He says the UK is now running the fastest vaccination programme in the world.

He says the halving time for hospital admissions (ie, the amount of time it takes for them to go down by half) is 18 days.

Among the over-80s it is falling every 12 days, he says.

Hancock says two more pieces of research show the impact the vaccination programme is having.

I think the UK contribution to covax is a really good start to helping other countries, as is the pledge to share out our surplus.

Pootle40 · 02/03/2021 18:30

@Haffiana

UK have fully vaccinated approx 1.2% of the population.

Israel have fully vaccinated 40% of the population.

There are many other countries that have fully vaccinated a greater percentage than the UK.

Depends how much that really matters looking at the impact of one dose.....
TooManyPlatesInMotion · 02/03/2021 18:33

The vaccine roll out is fab. Bravo to all those behind it.

Cloudbeeb · 02/03/2021 18:36

@Haffiana

The fact they secured an uninterrupted supply of the Pfizer vaccine in return for them sending the company anonymised data on the rollout? Other factors have come into play, and it was some political brilliance (albeit could have proven to have been a huge risk) that secured it, but I wouldn't say it was directly comparable because of that.

Yes, and the UK also purchased a huge supply - 300 doses or somesuch overkill. So what? You seem to be saying that they cheated in some way. It isn't bloody football teams. The fact is that thanks to their government and their vaccine programme they have vaccinated a far greater proportion of their population than the UK in a shorter time, as have the UAE also.

Many poorer countries have no vaccine and haven't vaccinated anyone at all. How do we compare them to the UK? What does that say about the political brilliance of the UK?

Calm down. I didn't say they cheated as it's not a fucking competition, and I never commented on the pOlItIcAl BrIlLiAnCe of the UK. Just that their roll out was different to anywhere else globally.
VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2021 18:37

One of my friends her paid job is organising the volunteer roster at the local centre. Lots of people volunteering their time, multiple shifts.

She’s nervous though that as lockdown is lifted people might have better things to do. She’s already seeing people not wanting to commit for April onwards.

Please if you can offer some shifts do so.

notrub · 02/03/2021 18:40

It's a brilliant British success but please remember a few things.

  1. The vaccine is thanks to our scientists.

  2. The roll-out is a HUGE success - that's down to the government acting as enablers rather than outsourcing it like they did with T&T.

So in short, well done Boris and co - on THIS occasion you struck gold. It makes up somewhat for the previous ballsups. But please don't make any more ballsups, like rushing the exit from lockdown, else all this good work will go to waste.

Finally, I detest all this vaccine nationalism going on. The UK have implemented a good program, but also we've been fortunate enough to have a massive pharmaceutical sector already in place, and have one of the first vaccines produced locally. Let's simply be grateful for that.

I might be able to. Is there a central place to sign up @VivaLeBeaver?

You clearly have an agenda @Haffiana . Just because the government have fucked up a lot of things, doesn’t mean that everything is fucked up. Israel is clearly a different case, as other posters have said but you have dismissed. I’m also not sure we can compare ourselves to the Falklands. And the focus on first vaccinations is increasingly being acknowledged as the right approach. Sometimes political dogma blinds one to the reality which is not always black and white.

peak2021 · 02/03/2021 19:09

So the one thing where the contract is not given to Tory donors and most of all the one thing where scientific advice has been followed to the letter is the one success story in the UK response to the pandemic. Not only something to celebrate but something to remember when there is the inevitable inquiry at some point in the future.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/03/2021 19:09

Yes- brilliant effort. The need to be negative about something that has gone v well is irritating. Nice to have a few moments of happiness.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 02/03/2021 19:12

WTF another one of these threads OP? How many now???

tigger1001 · 02/03/2021 19:15

The government have got lots of things wrong in their dealing with the pandemic but I can certainly be happy with the vaccination programme.

I remember reading threads on here saying if we got a vaccine it would take at least 2 years before everyone was offered one. Thanks to the hardworking scientists and the way the vaccine has been rolled out we are looking to have most vaccinated in the next few months. It's amazing

Dongdingdong · 02/03/2021 19:23

This page contains a chart with actual rates per 100 people and the number of days that a country has been vaccinating. The 'fastest' is Israel, by a wide margin.

edition.cnn.com/interactive/2021/health/global-covid-vaccinations/index.html

@Haffiana thanks for the link - I haven’t seen that before, but it’s great to see yet more evidence of what a fantastically good job the UK is doing with our vaccine rollout.

You are joking, right? I point out that another country has vaccinated more of its population than the UK, and I have a political agenda? WTF are you on about?
FamilyOfAliens · 02/03/2021 20:13

We have thrashed every other country

Cringe

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 20:22

In actual fact, Gibralter has "won" because they've done 100% of the population. Israel second, Seychelles third, UAE 4th and the Falkland Islands 5th for 1st doses given. Which shows what nonsense this is as this is first doses given per 100 people and also massively depends on the size of the country as to how fast the actual rate is or how impressive it is.

In actual terms, the US has given out the absolute highest number of first doses, not measured as a % of the population, followed by China, then us, then India, then Turkey, the Brazil, then Israel.

ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations

So UK, Israel and UAE have done well, punching above their weight. But the US and China have by far issues the most doses, with the UK third.

Baileysforchristmas · 02/03/2021 20:24

@MythicalBiologicalFennel you don’t have to read my threads if they upset you so much 😊

Places who have more than 20% of population vaccinated with first dose as of last posting:

Gibraltar 109.25
Israel 94.88
Seychelles 80.78
United Arab Emirates 60.95
Falkland Islands 49.73
Wales 32.65
Cayman Islands 32.12
England 31.65
United Kingdom 31.07
Scotland 30.94
Guernsey 29.90
Northern Ireland 29.50
Jersey 29.00
Bermuda 27.42
Isle of Man 25.87
United States 22.99
Maldives 21.67
Serbia 21.11

The data is fascinating - especially how the US are accelerating after a slow start. I think it's great - the more people and places vaccinated the better for everyone.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/03/2021 20:39

It is impressive and credit where its due, people are quick to criticise but can't admit when something has actually been done well
My 83 year old uncle in canada with several healtg conditions has not been done either and has no idea when he will so is going to have to stay at home for a fair bit longer and he is quite upset

Bluethrough · 02/03/2021 20:39

These "ballsups" have led to 121k and counting, deaths, one of the highest per capita in the world.

So no, its not Well Done Boris.

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 20:42

Countries that have given over a million doses:

England 17.81 million
India 14.30 million
Turkey 8.77 million

United Arab Emirates 6.03 million
Russia 5.24 million
France 4.56 million
Italy 4.35 million
Spain 3.83 million
Morocco 3.60 million
Chile 3.49 million
Poland 3.38 million

Mexico 2.53 million
Canada 1.95 million
Scotland 1.69 million
Romania 1.52 million
Serbia 1.44 million
Argentina 1.05 million
Wales 1.03 million

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/03/2021 20:42

Unfortunately, those who think UK vaccination rates means that the world will open up again are wrong.
Until everyone is vaccinated we are all still at risk.
Its fascinating, really. Unlike malaria or other diseases in the developing world covid knows no borders.
Until the West starts helping the developing world the variants will continue and potentially get more serious.
That's sort of how viruses work.

Yes your right so I guess you have heard of covax and how much the uk donated
They have been a bit slow getting vaccinations but seems they have started now.
Also uk has said it will donate some spare jabs when possible , again this is something we are quite pro active on and aware

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 20:45

Israel IS winning on how much of the population is fully protected 92 doses) though - to those that see it as a competition

Israel 39.7%
Gibraltar 39.5%
Seychelles 23.9%
United Arab Emirates 22.1%
Cayman Islands 11.8%

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 20:45

2 doses

HolmeH · 02/03/2021 20:48

Good god, who cares?! We are doing really bloody well. Let’s just enjoy the success & the freedom it’ll hopefully give us!
