Brazilian Strain, can we help?

Ineke · 01/03/2021 16:00

One out of the six cases of the people with the Brazilian strain of the virus cannot be traced, due to errors in their contact details. Can Mumsnetters help find this person? Surely someone would know if a friend or relative had returned from Brazil, (via a no direct route admittedly), just before hotel quarantine, so would it be acceptable to inform Track and Trace and nip this in the bud. Could save lives, could save the effectiveness of the current vaccines.

Wtf OP, take a step back and calm down. Can mumsnetters find this person!? What nonsense.

Doireallyneedaname · 01/03/2021 16:08

@Julbukk How on earth is it nonsense?

rainbowunicorn · 01/03/2021 16:37

The thing is OP there are likely to be many more cases of this varient than the 6 that they have identified in the UK. The only reason that we know about these ones those tests were checked through genome sequencing. We only do this with a percentage of the tests so a much higher percentage will not ever be traced to one strain.

I think we shoud keep it in persective. There's a lot of should, could, might, perhaps and may type language being used in any reports about it so i really don't think we need gto be panicking.

There will also be thousands of strains / varients circulating that you will never hear about.

Julbukk · 01/03/2021 16:38

Find this ‘missing’ person won’t nip this in the bud. Apparently their test was processed 14/2 so they’ll no longer be in their infectious period. Whilst it would be nice to find them to perform advanced contact tracing its really not going to nip it in the bud, not at all.

And wtf would ‘mumsnetters’ have a clue, that’s overestimating the reach of the site somewhat.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 01/03/2021 16:45

Perhaps the errors were deliberate because they don't want to be traced Hmm I wonder how many more have come in via the back door.

Doireallyneedaname · 01/03/2021 16:45

@Julbukk I don’t think it’s underestimating it at all.

119 million users on here, apparently.

Stranger things have happened online.

Ineke · 01/03/2021 16:47

No, ,you are all right ofcourse, it was wishful thinking, but pointless I suppose. Hard to believe that this whole pandemic began with just one person. The spread of it is mind blowing, if only goodwill could be spread as easily!

They didn't fill the card in. It's highly unlikely they'll come forward if it means risking prison imo.

Ineke · 01/03/2021 16:52

@Doireallyneedaname but thank you for having faith. Sometimes the Internet can influence major changes, so thank you for your positive comments.

What card did they not fill in? And where were they tested?

They aren't risking prison for incorrectly filling in a PCR test form, don't be daft.

OP - calm the fuck down, it's being followed up as much as needed, the last thing anyone needs is idiots harassing random Spaniards on the off chance that they're Brazilian.

notimagain · 01/03/2021 17:09

It's highly unlikely they'll come forward if it means risking prison imo.

Given it finally seems to been made clear that all the individuals that travelled from Brazil and who are involved in this arrived in the UK before the introduction of the red list and also that according to the vaccines Minister those same indviduals “have been isolating correctly" why is anybody suggesting prison?

peak2021 · 01/03/2021 17:09

I don't think MN can help or should be asked to, but I wish Mr Johnson would stop lying about the lack of border controls.

It isn't 100% certain this person came from Brazil, or even came from overseas... It is most likely that at least they came from overseas because we only see 5 other cases, but although most other countries aren't yet aware of a Brazil variant issue there could be other spread.
notimagain · 01/03/2021 17:19

...Am I being thick, because I finally thought I'd got my head around this but I'm beginning to wonder?

  1. Pre the introduction of the red list/managed quarantine some people arrive in UK from Brazil via Paris/Zurich.
  2. All have correct paperwork.
  3. All isolate at home correctly (see point 1.)
  4. Somebody , possibly a contact of one of the travellers get's a PCR kit (?post) submits sample, posts it off but forgets to fill in form with contact details.
  5. That person's sample tests positive for the Brazilian variant.
  6. That's the individual the high profile personhunt is about.

Is that it or am I missing by a mile?

MRex · 01/03/2021 17:21

That's all correct, except that because we don't know who the "somebody" is, it's a bit speculative about whether they were on that flight. Perhaps it's being assumed because of dates; they would have needed a negative test to fly from anywhere.

notimagain · 01/03/2021 17:23

@MRex

I thank you....I think I've got in now.

nordica · 01/03/2021 18:05

Listening to the press conference just now with Hancock etc. it sounded like PHE thinks this person may have had a test through the surge testing that's been going on in specific areas recently i.e. had a knock on the door and been handed a test that way. That means they may not have been in Brazil at all I guess? And may not have been symptomatic which would explain why they didn't do anything when their test results never came back due to the information form not being filled in.

MRex · 01/03/2021 19:28

@nordica - I couldn't watch it, but that would explain the 4 postcodes. Perhaps it also increases the likelihood that they are somehow linked to the other two cases rather than the flight...

GetOffYourHighHorse · 02/03/2021 08:56

I bet there's loads of fraud with form filling in. Imo ID should be provided with a completed form and if it's a home test the kit will have been sent to the address so even with incorrect or no details on the form they'd have the dispatch address.

All this attention on the news, as if this one case needs finding. He/she will represent thousands of returning 'essential travellers' who don't want to share their details i reckon.

notimagain · 02/03/2021 09:03

He/she will represent thousands of returning 'essential travellers' who don't want to share their details i reckon.

That's a heck of a leap........if the individual didn't want to "share their details" and stay below the radar then why even bother returning a sample?

isthismylifenow · 02/03/2021 09:07

I don't live in the UK, but this morning I heard about this on the international news segment on our local radio station. I was a bit taken aback when the newsreader announced, "The United Kingdom is conducting a manhunt for an unidentified person who tested positive for the Brazilian variant".

We don't hear too much about your news, so this seemed a little dramatic.

Circumlocutious · 02/03/2021 09:15

Panicking and trying to catch the Brazilian strain through close monitoring of travellers from Brazil is pointless. The Brazilian strain has already been detected Italy, Spain, France and the US., which means it's only a matter of time before there's community transmission in the UK.

It's literally like we've learnt nothing from last year about how viruses spread.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 02/03/2021 09:33

It's just about containment isn’t it, which is a good idea as the vaccine may not be as effective against the Manaus variant. Why, in this day of technology can't people just be traced via passports. Everyone entering the country is logged so surely a database with test status included shouldn't be too hard.

King Canute and all that.
