This time last year...

Is anyone else thinking back to this time last year when things were still (relatively) normal?

According to my Facebook memories, a year ago I was at an art exhibition, in an indoor space with possbly hundreds of other people, none of us wearing masks or socially distancing.

A week or so later I travelled into London on train/tube (again, no mask wearing) for a work meeting, then met a friend for lunch where we hugged each other hello and goodbye.

Looking back it seems crazy to have been able to have done all those things when we were only a few weeks away from school closures and national lockdown.

What were you doing this time last year?

We had a weekend break in London end of February and I was half worried as to whether we should go but we went and had a lovely time... went to Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly and I distinctly remember how rammed with people the pavements were when we left. Naively that felt comforting, if others were out and about and not worried, why should we be?
Also remember the situation rapidly deteriorating at the start of March, a boy in my DDs class having an awful cough after being in Italy at half term and me wondering if I should complain to the school for not sending him home. Also teaching my DCs that they must turn off light switches with their knuckles rather than their fingertips and to do door handles with their elbows. Strange and scary times.

I remember going to church - which was packed- and the priest mentioned that some parishioners had asked him if 'this virus' would mean church closures. I remember thinking that would never happen. A week or so later, we had Parents Evening at work and there was a tiny bottle of sanitiser which a Y6 child was squirting into random hands as parents entered the packed school hall. Happy days.

I was at the theatre where I presume I caught covid, got really unwell a week later and still have some problems now. It was a great show though Grin

Not long returned from an amazing holiday in Edinburgh

We had a case locally in the early days. The press had descended, social media going mad. Places closed for deep clean and people in full Hazmat suits. It seemed so rare and such a big reaction, I just couldn't imagine lots of people getting it. I was very blade and naieve tbh.

My fb says I was at home with my 3 kids in half term, loving being at home and the fact they just want to play and don't need to go anywhere or do anything! I literally spent all of half term alone with them and loved it.

I was heavily pregnant and working in a hospital (non-clinical). I had been ill since since the end of Jan when I was completely wiped out and couldn’t get out of bed for a week and I had a high temp and cough. I then spent the whole of Feb dragging myself into work feeling like I had been run over by a truck and my temp kept spiking. It was very much BAU in the hospital. There had been a covid pod set up in A&E but only the people working in A&E had PPE. The week before when I got back from holiday my colleague told me that there was covid patients in the hospital. I was still regularly allowed into clinical areas and there was no PPE or hand santizer. I was regularly having meeting with my clinical colleagues in small unventilated meeting rooms. I was still using the same toilets as clinical staff and the public and still queueing in the restaurant to get food with no social distance AFAIK. The week after I went out for a meal with friends and it was packed. I was looking forward to staying my mat leave at the end of March and visiting family and getting my hair cut before baby arrived!

I do remember a friend who is a nurse in a private hospital asking if she could wear a mask and being told no as it would make people feel ill at ease!

Celebrating my daughters birthday. We had friends and family over and then drove off to a beautiful castle hotel for a few days.
We cancelled an activity because of the stuff we were reading in the news and heard handgel and the like was sold out at home so decided to stop off at the nearest town high street only to witness panic buyers.

Today we celebrated her 4th birthday and I've not been able to stop thinking about the year gone. Can't believe this has happened....

We went out for a family meal for my dad's 70th. We're so lucky to get it in before everything kicked off. I remember being anxious about being around my aunt and uncle who had just come back from Asia in case they might have come in contact with this weird 'foreign' illness.....

bonbonours · 01/03/2021 09:29

Also I was worrying about my daughter's French exchange trip (due on 10th March) being postponed. Little did I know that not only that but a million other trips and events would be cancelled

Dollywilde · 01/03/2021 09:34

One of my directors at work had decided to go for a piss up in Italy for a long weekend. I was 4 months pregnant and trying to summon the courage to tell work I didn’t want to come in if he was going to be there Sad

I was packing for Tenerife
I think we flew on the 4 th
Apart from worrying a bit in case the flight was cancelled I was excited as usual to be escaping the cold.

On a bum note, we were evacuated from there after two weeks instead of our usual three but I’m absolutely so thrilled we went and would go back today in a heart beat.

Should’ve been going on Friday but flight was cancelled

It was the last time I saw my BIL and a good friend alive :(

Hobbesmanc · 01/03/2021 12:30

We were setting up a Covid mutual Aid group - and had our first meeting in Costa with no social distancing and lots of fist bumps and joking around. A week later we had a couple of dozen volunteers around our house to organise the leaflet drop. It seems very strange now. The big thing was hand sanitiser which was like gold dust for a while.

We had planned to meet in the pub after the leafleting but that was cancelled and a few days later we were in lockdown. Seems like a different world

flappityflippers1 · 01/03/2021 12:36

A friend and I had a weekend away drinking cocktails and eating amazing food. I took my little boy to the aquarium and we met up with friends for a lovely country walk (all around this time last year according to google photos!)

I also held the third event for my new business which was insanely popular with amazing reviews. It was poised to absolutely fly, but relies on being able to see lots of people in a short space of time, so COVID killed it dead. I’ve now closed it down and am back (happily) working for my old company (and lucky to be able to have a job!!)

EvilPea · 01/03/2021 12:42

I was at an event someone else has mentioned upthread Grin
Talked to a lot of people, and a large amount had either just come back from Italy or had come in from europe for it.

TheDrsDocMartens · 01/03/2021 12:48

I was aware of Covid coming and wondering about ds birthday party.
We were prepped and I bought masks etc.
My work had already stopped as clients were isolating.
We went ahead with ds party but looking back it was pretty safe anyway, very airy and sanitised before eating etc.
Just after that kids started dropping out of school ill. Dd2s friends parents are doctors and she was under orders to come home if friend stopped coming in.
