Covid vaccination and breastfeeding?

Anyone had it? Not had it? Reasoning?

I've been offered but I'm still in two minds since it wouldn't give my LO any immunity.

Had it. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) says there is no known risk, which is about as explicit as advice gets for bfing women, and I’ve been offered because I’m vulnerable - my DC will not be helped by me potentially being hospitalised with COVID.

PraiseBee · 27/02/2021 22:25

I'm breastfeeding and intend on having it when offered.

user643289 · 27/02/2021 22:26

I have.

Literally just got the vaccines 2 days ago and I'm breastfeeding. I was told by the nurse who asked the on call GP that although there are no proven side effects with breastfeeding after getting the vaccine and no evidence yet to suggest it can be passed through the milk she stated that the covid vaccines had not been tested on breastfeeding women therefore they don't really know but so far there's no evidence to suggest anything bad. Just to be on the safe side I didnt breastfeed for about 15hrs after getting it.

SpamIAm · 27/02/2021 22:36

I've chosen not to get it. I'm not particularly at risk (no underlying health conditions) so I didn't feel it was worth the unknown risk. Logically I know it's probably fine, but logic goes out of the window a bit sometimes.

Following this thread with interest. Breastfeeding my 5 mo and don't know what to do.

I expect I will probably just get it but I am worried about it if it hasn't be tested on breastfeeding women!

Keha · 27/02/2021 22:41

I have had it, read the evidence and the theoretical risk seems smaller than the risk of me getting covid and getting ill. Plus I want us all out of this asap. I work in social care, but am personally low risk and any face to face work I do can be done with social distancing so I feel quite safe, but was still very happy to have the vaccine.

EnglishRain · 27/02/2021 22:45

I declined as my personal risk isn't currently great. In a key worker but on maternity leave so not very at risk. There is research being done now on women who are bf so I'm waiting for that to come out, hopefully it will be soon.

justthinkingitover · 27/02/2021 22:53

@lana135 15 hours ? Did you manage that ? Sounds a completely random time.

I don't think I'll be offered for a few more month yet, despite having asthma, but will still be bf and will take the jab.

somersetsinger · 27/02/2021 23:34

I've had it a few weeks ago. I read (when the vaccine first came out) that breastfeeding women were advised not to get the vaccination.

The staff checked and explained that advice changes pretty quickly due to the large number of people getting the jab. Anyway, current guidelines say it is fine.

Further info: I had the Pfizer one. I'm feeding a toddler so I'm not the only food source. I've taken a fairly liberal approach to what goes into my body when breastfeeding e.g. wine, antihistamines, gin, antibiotics, beer.

whataballbag · 27/02/2021 23:41

I'm still feeding my toddler and had the vaccine on Tuesday

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 28/02/2021 00:44

There's good reason to believe that antibodies may well be passed on through breastmilk after the vaccine - study ongoing (see link below):
www.kpbs.org/news/2021/feb/10/covid-19-vaccine-beneficial-breastfed-babies/
Having seen Covid severely affect my low risk, fit 40-y-o DH I'm not taking any chances - due to have vaccine next weekend and can't wait. Am feeding my son (17 months but still feeds very regularly).

lana135 · 28/02/2021 19:16

I was gonna go at least 24hrs. Had the vaccine at 12pm then didn't breastfeed and uses formula until my son woke up at 3am. He doesnt really go to sleep well with a bottle so I guess I caved.
