Okay, so many people on my Facebook are travelling way out of their area for walks. I thought you still had to stay local, is that correct? I'm thinking that maybe it's because so many people are fed up with the rules.

The guidance days "local", the law doesn't say anything about distance.

I follow the law, though I've not been more than half an hour's drive away. I don't know anyone local and walking on my own all the time has been doing my head in.

There is law, and there's government guidance.

The guidance says stay local to your village, town, etc.

The law has no limits to where you can travel for exercise, which is why the police keep having to drop fines. Apparently they've forgotten that they are there to enforce the law, and not to enforce a polite request from government.

Local is subjective really isn't it? My idea of local and your idea of local can be 2 completely different things.

We're pretty much over run here with people coming from out of the immediate area (but still local, as in from the nearest town), so I travelled 5miles.or so to somewhere in another county to run, where there were less people (its literally 1min for me to go over county boundary by car). Next week I'm going to jump on a train to a close town to run back, it's further away than I went today, but still within the same district let alone county.

My council have specified stay in your area of the city and have apparently fined someone for driving 5 miles within the city. However people on Facebook seem to be driving up to 40mins to country parks etc. I’ve stayed very local but now I’m a bit gutted I’ve not gone further afield to walk with friends or have a change of scene as I feel like I’ve been a bit of a mug.

I've got a couple of days off work in a couple of weeks and I'm planning to drive for about half an hour to go for a walk just to see something different. It's not against the law and I it'll give my car a run out as well.

"Stay local" is guidance, not law. If the government wanted us to stay within 5 miles of home, they needed to pass a law stating that we much stay within 5 miles of home. They have not done this, so people who choose to travel 40 minutes to a country park are well within their rights to do that. I think it is sensible that the govt have not made it law, because "local" is different for different people. Some live within a mile of many supermarkets, others have to travel 10 miles to get to their nearest.

Depends what you define as local. We travel up to 30 minutes to huge country parks that are ticketed. They know our postcode isn’t immediately local but we’ve never been turned away 🤷🏼‍♀️ These places are still in my local council area therefore I deem it local. I live in a medium sized, rural village. My young kids are bored & fed up. They enjoy the change of scenery, it’s extremely limited numbers into the country parks & we don’t go near anyone in them really. I’d say there’s more risk at the local village park which is always heaving..

I did see a Facebook post from Bourton On The Water today saying the village was ‘still closed’ which made me laugh. You can’t close a village, there is no law on what is local in England. Driving 5/10 minute to wander along the river isn’t going to hurt anyone 🥴

We've been staying local and not travelling by car anywhere to walk but we will be from next weekend as we are losing the plot.

MirandaWest · 28/02/2021 15:58

Dh and I drove about 10 miles to go to a national trust place a fortnight ago. Apart from that I have run or walked from the house. I realised yesterday that once it’s Ok to travel a bit further there’s a walk I really want to do. Also want to see the sea again Smile

unchienandalusia · 28/02/2021 17:44

My local area which is an anob is overrun at the weekends with Londoners. London is about an hour away. They walk around on their phones inappropriately dressed asking for directions. I overheard a chap saying to his wife and kids "oooh we're definitely in the country now". It's driving us locals crazy as we can't do our usual walks at the weekend.
