What are the rules for students wanting to go between house share and family home?

Ds wants to go to his house share this weekend and come back in four weeks when it stops for Easter
All his lectures are online, he doesn’t ‘need’ to be at his uni accommodation
He says he needs a break for his mental health, he wants space. I think there are two others at the house share as they’re doing practical courses
I can’t find anything online about what the rules are!
Does anyone know? Thank you

I don't think he gets the choice to flit between places anymore than the rest of us.

Dayafterday · 27/02/2021 11:15

I thought that wasn’t allowed.

What did he do for Christmas? There was guidance for that to allow students to go home home safely.

skeggycaggy · 27/02/2021 11:15

Students can’t move between houses anymore than the rest of the population can.

It is not allowed. I am a student my uni has been clear about who can remain in the town. They would take a very dim view of students moving between home and student accommodation.

Bumbl · 27/02/2021 11:25

If it is for mental health reasons, or for students who can't work at home, then it is allowed.

Stirmecrazy · 27/02/2021 11:37

I think it is pretty tough for students. I will need to look into this as my DD is at Uni doing a practical degree and has been since January . She has already had the Covid vaccine as degree is medical based so had assumed she would be allowed home for Easter with some lateral flow tests performed if needed. If not this will be further evidence of a year of students completely screwed by Covid
Personally I would let my DS go with the proviso he self isolates for 7/10 days whatever the requirement is now. It’s not like he is nipping up there for a weekend jolly.

MatHancockLovesMyTits · 27/02/2021 11:39

Some courses are starting SOME face to face teaching from 8th March. If this includes his course then I think he'd be allowed to return or surely he'd miss out.
If not then I think he's supposed to stay home.

Springingintospring · 27/02/2021 11:40

It may not be technically allowed but I think he should do it anyway. It's been very tough for students. As long as its he's going for a few weeks or months rather than constantly flitting to and fro, and he takes extra precautions like a bit of self isolation or a test then I'd say it's fine.

Mine both went back after Christmas Their choice
Both seem to be enjoying it ,although neither are 1st years
It’s not really a matter for parents to allow or disallow, they are adults

Realitea · 27/02/2021 11:51

Thanks everyone, I’m with you all on this, i just wanted to find some stuff I could send him (as I’m at work at the moment) to show him it’s definitely not allowed. I took a screenshot of all your replies which I hope will make him see sense
Thanks for the link @skeggycaggy

A few of my DCs fellow students have stayed home, mainly the ones who weren’t enjoying Ini ,but lots have gone back
My DC see their Uni towns as their homes

HarrietOh · 27/02/2021 11:56

I live in a University city and they don’t have many of the courses on the list as eligible. Majority of students are back in the private houses, so I think most places are just ignoring those rules anyway. Can’t blame them really, if they’re spending money on the rent anyway and being in a shared house with friends is probably more fun!

Jouets · 27/02/2021 11:59

If he's paying for rent and gets tested before travel, I'd let him.

Racoonworld · 27/02/2021 12:04

It’s not allowed. Everyone’s fed up, everyone wants a break. It’s no different for students than everyone else.

Boph · 27/02/2021 12:08

Lots of students went back immediately after Christmas before the lockdown.
I agree it's not allowed but I would let him go.

DareIask · 27/02/2021 12:13

Some of these comments are unbelievable.

I'm fed up and would like to go to my second home.

I'm not.

Abraxan · 27/02/2021 12:15

18y Dd went back after Christmas, as did all 7 of the flat she is bubbled with (her flat is empty except her as no one else returned after October half term.)
She came home for Christmas after two negative tests and returned after Christmas, also following a negative pcr test.

She will do the same at Easter.

Abraxan · 27/02/2021 12:19

Dd was technically eligible due to her course, though after the first week in January it all moved online again anyway.

As she is with 7 other friends her age she is having a much nicer time than if she was at home for all this time with just me and her dad, who are working full time.

We will be letting her come home for Easter (also her birthday) though, under the same system as Christmas. So tests before she comes home and on her return.

I'm cv but had my first vaccine. I'm back at work in a week's time so, as like autumn, I'm more of a risk to her than she is to me.

Seeline · 27/02/2021 12:19

He can 'move house' but can't then come back again for Easter. If he is in private rental, uni can't stop that. Some have been quite strict over halls accommodation.

user1487194234 · 27/02/2021 12:20

Mine went back before the post New Year lockdown
They both are in shared flats for which they (well me !) are paying hundreds of pounds a month
So they are at their normal place of residence, they can’t come back here , they understood that when they went back
They are adults and made their own decisions

SansaSnark · 27/02/2021 12:31

I think the rules basically are that he can move once, but he can't then come back for Easter and then go back again for the summer term under the current rules.

Realistically, it's unlikely he'll get stopped, though.

I don't think you can stop him going and you'd have to be quite hard hearted to stop him going back.

Ginisatonic · 27/02/2021 12:33

I’d say he can move house. Same as anyone else can at the moment. But I’d say he can’t come home at Easter as that isn’t allowed. If he really is having mental health issues he should be ok with that.

LightandAiry · 27/02/2021 12:38

My ds went back to university 2 weeks ago; he was allowed to do so as working at home was increasingly difficult with no desk. The government is yey to issue guidelines for Easter but I imagine it will ne similar to Christmas amd they have a test before goimg home. I doubt they will be made to stay at university.

LightandAiry · 27/02/2021 12:39

Excuse the typos!

cantkeepawayforever · 27/02/2021 14:39

Exactly. DS has gone back (his course should re-start face to face from the 8th) but we now won't see him unless and until free movement resumes - so not for Easter, for example.
