Couldn't see another thread on this.

Please delete if there's one already.

News article just popped up on my phone.

They are going to do it by age

40-49
30-39
18-29

I think there's going to be some backlash about this from key workers

Can't copy the link sorry but Google will probably bring it up

I think this is fairest really. The roll out is going so quickly no one will have that long to wait. I wonder if they will extend down to 16 year olds after over 18’s done.

Finfintytint · 26/02/2021 11:46

Makes sense. Teachers and Police Officers will fall into those age categories anyway.

huggzy · 26/02/2021 11:47

I can see why they're saying it's quicker and easier this way, but that doesn't help key workers and is likely to create even more resentment.

SunsetGirl · 26/02/2021 11:47

The teachers are just as susceptible by age as the parents the kids bring the virus home to.

The parents are more likely to be in their 30s and 40s.

user88899 · 26/02/2021 11:48

Doesn't really make sense for a 24 year old teacher to be prioritised over 49 year old whatever that job, age groups seems the fairest, safest option.

Lululu22 · 26/02/2021 11:49

I saw this but would like to know what’s happened to the 50-59 age bracket. I have probably missed something really obvious but saw that some areas are calling 60-69’s now but no mention of 50s. Does anyone know?

DarceyDashwood · 26/02/2021 11:51

50-59 age bracket is the final group in the first priority roll-out so will be done before the second lot of age groups just announced.

rainbowfairydust · 26/02/2021 11:51

The 50 to 59s will still be after the 60s... They are talking about after the vulnerable, it will be in age order groups

soresore · 26/02/2021 11:51

@Lululu22 I think it's just planning ahead, they are still working through those ages in most areas.

Lululu22 · 26/02/2021 11:55

Ah okay thanks all. Knew it would be blindingly obvious! And thank goodness for that ... the sooner the better.

Quartz2208 · 26/02/2021 11:56

I think given the issues with how much harder Group 6 is as compared with the others it makes sense.

I think getting the 40-49 years old done in one go is gets the majority of the keyworkers you need to do (the risk does drop significantly under 40) and far quicker than trying to do it based on other criteria.

Wingedharpy · 26/02/2021 11:56

The quicker it can be done, the better for everyone.
Doing it by age is the simplest and quickest method.

Benhew · 26/02/2021 11:57

I think it is the fairest way, vaccination by occupation never sat right with me as where do you stop and there is so much potential for discrimination to be called. Hopefully they can just move down the groups quickly now.

LikeaSnowflake · 26/02/2021 12:01

I’m a teacher, 35 and this is fine by me. I wouldn’t consider myself more at risk in particular than any other jobs and it seems age is the biggest risk factor. I’d rather people were protected on this basis and then you are covering parents and families at home too. What’s the point in covering me if a child in class takes it home to their older parent who is more at risk? All vulnerable teachers should have been vaccinated in group 4 and 6 by that point.

DareIask · 26/02/2021 12:02

Totally agree with this.

Age has always been the biggest argument for everything. The young that argue they want to live their lives and ignore the whole thing, the old that need protecting...

Far simpler to just get on with age groups...

Theforest · 26/02/2021 12:02

Pleased to see this. Makes sense to roll out continuing with age as the older you are, the more risk of serious illness or death.

Jobs would be hard/impossible to identify from medical records. The more the general public vaccinated, less risk for key workers as a whole. If we are all to be vaccinated by July, this is positive for all.

Circumlocutious · 26/02/2021 12:04

I can’t get too worked up about this. The more people vaccinated, the more the reduction in transmission, the better off we all are. Age is by far the most efficient method for this.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/02/2021 12:06

Sensible decision

ComDummings · 26/02/2021 12:07

It’s the quickest and fairest way I think

bathsh3ba · 26/02/2021 12:08

I think it makes sense, it's just too complicated to do it by job. They can't even organise the clinically vulnerable group 6 other than through GP surgeries. (I have a feeling I may get called nationally by age for mine, at 38, before I get called by the GP for by being in group 6!).

Eccle80 · 26/02/2021 12:09

I think overall this is the right approach, from looking at what has happened with group 6, there would have been lots of arguments about which occupations were in or out and how they were defined. Hopefully going by age alone means they can push on really quickly using the mass vaccination centres rather than being bogged down in who is eligible.

ComDummings · 26/02/2021 12:10

Same for me too!
unmarkedbythat · 26/02/2021 12:12

It makes sense if only because any attempt to prioritise the rest of the vaccines by profession would cause delay.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/02/2021 12:13

Makes sense really. How can they choose what occupations to vaccinate first... The Keyworker list is extensive. Obviously not all of those are public facing.. but is a teacher more at risk than a prison officer... Or is a bus driver at more risk than a checkout assistant in Waitrose... A food factory worker or a post man... It's too complex.
