Vaccine booked for tomorrow but worried I’ll be turned away (and look like a twat!)

I booked via 119 as my GP has me coded as a carer for ASD DD.

I don’t claim carers allowance but I’m technically eligible for it . I don’t claim it as I claim PIP and that was a fight in itself to get so it’s not worth the hassle of claiming CA.

I plan on taking DD proof of higher rate DLA as proof but this is in my husbands name as he dealt with the claim . Will this be a problem?

I can take proof that I live at the same address as DD and I’ll also take proof of my PIP / my condition which puts me in group 6 anyway .

How likely are they to accept me and jab me?

The vaccinators in our hub don’t ask for proof of anything. If you have an appointment you are deemed to be there because you are eligible.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/02/2021 19:32

I was worried that I’d be turned away today. I was surprised to be included in group 6. No questions asked about why I was there- just essential health questions.
Jabbed and sent on my way (to sit and wait for 15 minutes!).

OcelotPanda · 25/02/2021 19:33

I know a number of carers who've had it now and none have been asked for any sort of proof. Once you're there they just want to jab you and get on to the next person.

Sounds promising . It’s a big hub I’m going to . Is everyone distanced out ? Will there be a queue ?

I volunteer at a hub. If you have a booking reference you will get the vaccine.
We ask people to wait in their cars until 10 mins before their appointment so queues don’t tend to be long and we have a snake type queue so everyone is spread out. All chairs in the observation area are cleaned as they are vacated, everyone has to sanitise their hands on entry so it’s all as safe as it can be for everyone involved.

I’m a carer to my son who also has ASD, severe learning difficulties and is non verbal and I got my vaccination today as his carer and didn’t need to provide any proof as a carer either, also I don’t claim carers allowance either as I’m over the threshold for income.

I’m still waiting for my son to get his appointment for the vaccine, rang the doctors today to see if he is on the gp learning disabilities register and he said no Hmm I had also rung 119 previously and they said he’s not due yet, doctor going to look into it so hopefully it will get sorted.

I must admit I find this hard to fathom. It's accepted that you are a carer but the person you care for isn't vulnerable. Surely if they weren't vulnerable you wouldn't be a carer?

I have been yet so my answer is based only on what I read and hear but I'd say it depends, I've read reports that some places aren't brilliant at the social distance, others are

If you dont mind saying where you are going I bet someone else will have already been there and can tell you for sure, totally understandable if you don't want to

marthastew · 25/02/2021 19:47

I'm also a carer that does not claim CA and I was jabbed today. No paper work needed or questions asked.

Doireallyneedaname · 25/02/2021 19:47

I was only recently added to the shielding list and I also thought I’d get turned away. They didn’t ask for any proof of ID, just checked my name was on the list and that was it.

LucyMaxwellDM · 25/02/2021 19:47

I have absolutely no proof that I’m an unpaid carer. It happened by accident after Christmas to a gentleman I’d only known a month. I would never have thought of registering myself as a carer until I happened to register him as a new patient at my doctors surgery this week as his previous one wasn’t fit for purpose. My GP ma de me an appointment immediately and I’m off for my vaccine tomorrow. They have also arranged a home visit to give to the person I care for as he is housebound.

pinkearedcow · 25/02/2021 19:58

@FlashBackBacon I just wanted to say that claiming Carer's Allowance is nowhere near the hassle of claiming PIP. All you have to do is confirm you under the earnings threshold and provide the details of the person you care for. It's all online,no big forms, no interviews. Please claim if you are entitled.

Ieatmypeaswithhoney · 25/02/2021 20:02

I wasn't asked anything other than my name... literally in, name, jab, out.

CryMeAnAquifer · 25/02/2021 20:06

I have been lurking on these threads for a while as I’m a carer for my CEV dad.

Sorry for jumping in but I’m a bit lost really - I recently contacted my GP to be coded as an unpaid carer (had no idea about this until reading about it on here). A few days later I called 119 and they told me if I didn’t have proof of CA (I don’t claim it) I am not yet eligible for a vaccine.

What do I need to do please? Thank you!

Grenola · 25/02/2021 20:32

I had mine today as a carer, I do claim. Carers allowance. I got there Ns got questioned why I was there and that I needed proof. Had nothing. Eventually I remembered I had an email about shielding and just showed that. I'm sure evidence of having a child that has dla will. Be fine x

FlashBackBacon · 25/02/2021 20:38

I’m less nervous now thank you all Flowers

@pinkearedcow thanks for the link. The issue is more that PIP assessors and decision makers take a dim view of you claiming CA if claiming PIP . It is allowed but they use it as evidence to contradict your claim to disability Hmm

Update: I got my vaccine!

They did ask me for my NHS ID which was slightly confusing but I just explained I was an unpaid carer. They seemed to be asking everyone for various information.

I did have to show proof but DLA and proof I lived with DC was enough .

Sorry to highjack this thread. Is anyone who is caring for an ASD child eligible for the jab at this point? Our son has ASD but we do not receive any DLA or any other benefit. He also doesn't have an EHCP. Would be interesting to know.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 26/02/2021 22:48

@FlashBackBacon. Excellent. 💐

Cloudyrainsham · 26/02/2021 22:53

I went yesterday, I’m a carer for my son. They didn’t ask for any proof.

As for carers allowance, if your daughter is on high rate DLA and you care for her 38 hours per week and you didn’t earn over the threshold you’re eligible. It’s easy, you apply online, it’s not like applying for PIP.
