University students - ? Home for Easter

I’m a bit confused about the guidance initially read it as ‘Stay at Home’ rule ceases on 29th March and thought ‘Great - that’s DD home for Easter’ but then seems to say that we can only meet outdoors. Hmm
I’m dying to see my children has anyone seen anything about university students and holidays?

No one? Sad
I guess as the vast majority of university students are at home doing on-line lectures the ones who have to be on campus don’t matter? Hmm
DD is a second year student nurse currently on placement on a paediatric oncology ward, finishing the week before Easter where she has a few weeks of on line lectures starting her next placement. She’s off over Easter and I’m dying to get her home but as an HCP and a student HCP we don’t want to break any COVID rules.

Mine are at university for similar reasons and I've been wondering about it too.

From what I can see they have to stay put for now. But I might be wrong.

Helenluvsrob · 25/02/2021 20:45

Mine hasn’t gone back. Paying for her her here and there is great 🧐
She’s desperate to be back though. Last year and all that.

The way I read it is the date is 17th May which is depressing.

My sister is in her final year and came home for a few weeks at Christmas but went back in mid Jan. There was no way she was staying at our parents- She left the majority of her stuff, textbooks and all her housemates were back.

She's been back for one week since (she needed it mentally) and I'm sure she'll come home at Easter whatever the ruies are, as are all her friends. It's cruel to make students stay in one place imo. She takes tests everytime she travels anyway.

My neice and friends children haven't gone back but before Christmas they were saying many of their peers were going home every weekend.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 25/02/2021 21:51

Is there anyone from university sector who can clarify what the ones who were allowed back are able to do for Easter?

Mine had to go back due to specific science degree but she has been there a long time now.

Wilkolampshade · 25/02/2021 21:59

Mine go back and forth 'normally' at the beginning and end of terms. Take tests as necessary. Not legal but no practical alternative. 🤷‍♀️

Jouets · 25/02/2021 22:11

Re: the legal side, if they're moving back for Easter opposed to just a visit, I'm sure that will be allowed. My sister was allowed (confirmed by the uni) to travel home even after her area was in Tier 4, and this was when cases were sky high. I can't imagine students won't be allowed home for April.

NameChangedToAnswer · 25/02/2021 22:16

Mine went back to campus after Christmas. It was against guidance but was not illegal. The uni itself said the campus was open if for whatever reason you couldn't study effectively from home. DS says three quarters of his flat of 8 are back and probably about 1/2 the campus overall. He may be slightly exaggerating but I think a substantial proportion of students may well have moved back to uni.
Anyway as far as Easter is concerned, he'll be coming back home to us. The uni are offering regular LFT tests which will reduce the risk. Sorry but he's had a bit of a rubbish first year at uni and he's not staying there on his own- all his flatmates are going back home for Easter.
As far as next term is concerned, as the plan is to open self catering holiday accommodation from 12th of April, good luck at keeping students from accommodation they have paid for.

Boulshired · 25/02/2021 22:39

DS1 should be coming back for work, not even sure what the rules are for that. He is in a shared house they are all planning to return to the homes and are planning to arrange tests.

Thanks. That's very helpful.

DS is going back to uni next week after being here since sept. He will be coming home for Easter if he wants to. They have regular testing on campus so he can test before he comes back and will test before he returns (we aren't a high risk to him as we all WFH, and he is going to live in a house with two others)

Alwaysfrank · 26/02/2021 13:56

Mine is coming home, legal or not. He's going to do a course necessary for summer work all being well, and also to spend his 21st birthday at home.
