Double glazing salesmen allowed?

So had some double glazing salesmen just call, for one of the big well known companies. No mask. Surely in a lockdown this isn’t essential? Technically it’s construction and allowed, but going and standing by hundred of people’s doors a day?

People need to earn a living. I really can’t blame companies for trying to keep their business operating so they have a functioning company when we come out of this. It would be polite and good practice for salespeople to wear a mask when they knock at the door, but they aren’t legally required outside.

Jo99996 · 25/02/2021 17:11

I agree, its work and they are outside. No issue (other than door to door sales being annoying)

BirdHedge · 25/02/2021 17:42

But there’s a difference between tradesmen building your conservatory and salesmen soliciting for business when my local outdoor garden centre isn’t allowed to open for business nor my local cook shop etc.
It’s isn’t work that needs to be done out the home by trying to solicit business this way. Build them, come and quite if called but not door to door under a lock down.

Honestly - do you think this salesperson posed a risk? Can they do their job from home? Has their business and income probably massively sufferered through lockdown? Is Spring the main time people invest in home improvements.

I think you should maybe have some empathy. I dont think there's a rule broken here?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 25/02/2021 17:54

Just don't answer the door. You didn't ask them to come.

OverTheRainbow88 · 25/02/2021 18:02

If you can’t work from home you go to work... that’s what they are doing.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2021 18:17

Surely a sales person should be able to advertise via flyers etc, work by phone or set up zoom or similar meetings?

I don't think a business model which depends on doorstepping or in-person pressure selling is in any way essential.Hmm

The person who comes to measure up and the fitters, of course, are a different matter.

BirdHedge · 25/02/2021 19:18

@ErrolTheDragon exactly. They can come and sell/send samples and measure up and build. Doorstepping is not essential and they were less than 2m talking their way down the entire street with no masks.

When a salesman knocks on the door, he doesn't know who is the other side. Could be someone ECV, someone nervous or someone who doesn't give a toss and gets far too close to them. For all concerned I'd want a mask or visor worn if close to the doorstep. Have to wear one all day myself inside, you get used to it.

poppycat10 · 25/02/2021 20:53

It's not ok, no. They should not be calling round to peoples' houses during a pandemic, ludicrous behaviour. I suppose they've decided that the shielded have been vaccinated and they can start annoying people again.

AfternoonToffee · 25/02/2021 21:12

We had someone knock as soon as lockdown one ended.Hmm

I did have some windows replaced last week but I approached them.

peak2021 · 25/02/2021 21:16

Send them away very quickly. Phone in hand (they might think you will call the police) and give them a minute to leave your front garden.
