Should the young be vaccinated ?

I just read an article about 20 somethings being offered the vaccine in some areas. There were a lot of comments from people about how ridiculous this was and that 20 year olds shouldn't be accepting the vaccine as they are likely to not be hugely affected by covid. The rationale was that they don't know the long term effects of the vaccine yet and that there was the possibility of developing an autoimmune disease which may not be so much of a concern for an elder person. People were saying why put yourself at such a risk etc when your risks from covid are small.
I'm late twenties and have been offered the vaccine but I also have a condition listed in group 6, typically I'd already booked it and it's tomorrow.
I'm now frantically researching everything trying to make the right decision. Does anyone here have a useful insight please?

Covid causes auto immune reactions in some people as does flu.
ive got muscle twitches which could be vitamins (b12/calcium/potassium etc) or could be ms or parkinsons. There was higher numbers of parkinsonism after the 1919 flu.
It certainly can affect your thyroid (thyroiditis) giullan barre or bells palsy have come on for some people.

I think as long as it's safe kids will have the vax
It is needed for herd immunity to slow spread.
It would cause chaos in schools on an ongoing basis too and unis.
It is damaging childrens hearts etc with myocarditis ? Even in asymtomatic

If any immune response to the spike protein cause autoimmunity then it would also happen with covid infection. Covid infection is also going to create immune responses to other parts of the virus too. As pp said covid can cause a host of other problems, even in young asymptomatic so I would say the vaccine is safer than covid.

I'm in my 20s and had the vaccine this week as I'm in group 6. I know my risk would still be relatively low due to my age but there's a reason group 6 conditions have been prioritised.

viixie · 24/02/2021 21:37

@asdfghjkjhgfd if you have the condition, would you still have it ?

@asdfghjkjhgfd sorry that was meant to say, if you didn't have the condition would you still take the vaccine?

I haven't been offered the vaccine but I'll be taking it when I do (30 years old). I trust the scientists who developed this vaccine more than I trust the opinions of random people with no medical knowledge.

Also the way I see it is, I'm not having the vaccine for myself, I'm having it to protect others around me who are vulnerable, so we can get herd immunity and get back to normal life.

Yes if I was offered it, I am also eligible for the vaccine due to being a frontline health worker and if I didn't have the health condition I would have got it that way instead.

Yes I am 29 and had it I work in healthcare
I have seen many young people with covid/long covid if you have the chance take it

People with a lot of knowledge have put considerable thought into who should be prioritised.

They’re not doing this for shits and giggles, there’s a lot at stake.

If you’re offered it, take it.

My take on it was to have it but took it easy for a couple of weeks after to give the immune system the chance to do its thing. Lots of sleep and healthy food.
