Ongoing chest pain

I'm not sure that this problem is coronavirus related or not but I was wondering if anyone with long-covid and ongoing chest pain could share how they've been feeling? I had a really bad sore throat last March lasting for weeks but was never tested for Covid-19. Ever since I've had discomfort in my chest but it's not constant (but occurs daily) and doesn't require any painkillers. It's like a pressure I guess in the sternum area. I've had loads of blood tests, unrelated abdominal CT scan, chest x-ray, ECG, heart CT scan and been referred for further tests. Has anyone had similar as a result of long-covid? None of the doctor's I've seen so far have mentioned it but now I'm wondering if I should bring it up as a possibility?

I had a bit of chest pain that came and went depending on how rested I was mainly.
Would you like to come and join the long running long covid support thread? People have different symptoms with long covid, as you are probably aware, and normally there is someone on there who will have had what someone else has had with long covid.

Yeah still have chest pain 11 months later along with breathlessness, fatigue, hoarse voice and sore throat etc. Have only had a ecg and chest xray, diagnosed with post covid syndrome and waiting to see a clinic (although I was never tested I had quite severe and classic symptoms)

I had a form of a coronavirus 3 years ago and ended up getting a condition called costochondritis which is a pain in the sternum area. Is the pain like aching, scratching, stinging or cramp as that’s what I have had. I was diagnosed at the doctor and hospital. I found out since that quite a few people have gotten costochondritis after covid too. I finally got rid of mine recently through chest stretches which a foam roller has really helped. Apparently it is to do with scarring from the virus which can cause you chest/back to become in a locked position. Most doctors have not heard of the condition. I hope you get it sorted.

I had covid 4 months ago. I have ongoing discomfort and aches in my chest at times, along with some other issues. I'm seeing the GP for other issues at the moment and it's in my notes a,onside other 'long covid' issues.

nrpnrp · 24/02/2021 13:01

Thanks everyone, it's the only 'symptom' I have now and whilst i've heard of 'chest pain' as a symptom of long-covid I wasn't sure whether discomfort rather than intense pain would fit into the category especially when no doctor has mentioned it. It's definitely not pleasant having multiple times a day though.

@Claire926 I guess it's somewhere between and tightness and pressure. The doctor didn't seem to think it was costochondritis but I might give some chest stretches a try or see a physio whilst I'm waiting for the other tests. Anything's worth a go!

I’ve had exactly this and also had an unknown virus in March. Touch wood the sternum pain is less of an issue now but still have flare ups and also an very stuffy in nose the majority of time. I was told it’s costo and have gone through most of the drug book since but I don’t think it is now.

justgivejack · 24/02/2021 13:22

Yes this sounds exactly like me - like a pressure on chest. I've had X-ray, bloods, ecg (which was abnormal but something unrelated), echo which was normal. I'm back at drs on Monday - I ended up in a&e as thought I was having a heart attack and they said a lot of patients are presenting with same issues after having covid

justgivejack · 24/02/2021 13:24

Should have added I only had really mild symptoms when I tested positive

Claire926 · 24/02/2021 13:50

@nrpnrp That’s great if you try the stretching. You can see how you get on. Best of luck getting it sorted.

I hope they are going to do an angiogram for you to check your ateries? Also, I get pain in my chest - inflammation in my crib cage - my sister gets it too. Its an autoimmune thing. This is what the NHS website says about it:
Costochondritis is the medical term for inflammation of the cartilage that joins your ribs to your breastbone (sternum). This area is known as the costochondral joint. Cartilage is tough but flexible connective tissue found throughout the body, including in the joints between bones.

Wingingit15 · 24/02/2021 14:39

Is anyone else really worried how their body would weather covid now ?!

Claire926 · 24/02/2021 15:06

P.S I forgot to mention I had tightness too where it is hard to breathe. Since I had my virus I take vitamin C, D and zinc everyday and touchwood I have not had a cold or flu in 3 years.

HSHorror · 24/02/2021 15:17

I also think costochondritis.
I also had a coat hanger pain in my back made worse with a raised voice.
It all gradually got better. But i had been taking a lot of vit d and c etc.

I've been told to be very careful for this reason - following Covid 4 mints ago my health is worst than before. I was already vulnerable and now more so.

Luckily I'm currently sat in the car awaiting my first vaccine in about 20 minutes time.

Claire926 · 24/02/2021 15:24

@HSHorror I had something like that and it felt like there was a bone in my throat!

I wasn't until you said it! I was back a few months ago.

I keep meaning to ask on MN how many people have had it twice. I dont personally know anyone who has.

Rightly or wrongly, I feel like I wont get it ever again. Not really sure why I feel like that. I feel I went through it, and am just about out the other side, and that is that. Finished.

Wingingit15 · 24/02/2021 16:15

There is a costo group on f b and a kiwi chiro called Steve August on there who gives helpful advice (also manufactures something called a backpod which some people seem to think is amazing, I don’t have it personally)

I had a CT coronary angiogram and the results of that were fine. Been referred for an Echo and stress test but my appointment for those are months. My vitamin levels are all good too but I guess I can take extras, I'm sure it won't do any harm!

Thanks for all the responses. They are slightly reassuring in a strange way!

Yes sounds similar, I felt the same when this first started but it's not quite as intense anymore. I hope the doctor has something helpful to say.

This is so odd - I've had exactly the same thing, though it's not pain exactly but a tight pressure feeling. It started last year, went away for ages and is back now. I don't really think it's related to covid as I haven't virus symptoms at any point, but it's still interesting to hear that lots of people are mysteriously presenting with this kind of thing. I thought it might be due to poor wfh posture, as it gets better once I leave my desk for the day. I wonder if costochondritis can present with only this dull tight chest feeling, rather than sharp pain?

Sunshinespacecadet · 24/02/2021 17:10

Yes, the same, unknown virus causing bilateral pneumonia in March. Still have chest pain daily and blocked nose
