Vaccines and the future

So, is the idea that 70 million people in the UK will have to be vaccinated each year for the foreseeable? That will be a faff.

Hmm better than the alternative surely

MRex · 23/02/2021 13:25

Considerably less faff than closing large parts of the economy. More enjoyable as a process than staying away from family and friends too.

CheeseJalapenoBread · 23/02/2021 13:40

Not really a faff once the infrastructure is in place.

Anothermuddywalk · 23/02/2021 13:53

I would imagine it will become like the flu vaccine - the elderly and vulnerable will be vaccinated via the NHS, and everyone else have the option to pay for it if they want it.

Racoonworld · 23/02/2021 13:56

Much better and cheaper then lockdowns. Hopefully in a few years it will be more like the flu jab program but for now it’s fine

Downriver · 23/02/2021 14:16

I am not arguing about whether or not it is better or not than lockdowns. Gawd people are defensive. But that is a huge biomedical programme and it seems it is not just elderly and vulnerable who will need to keep taking it. Quite an undertaking. I just wonder what infrastructure will develop to administer it.

I think this question was put to the scientists in the briefing before last and I think, it will just be the old/vulnerable like the flu jab. The mass vaccination now is to also help cut transmission but going forward the entire population won't have to be vaccinated every year.

doireallyneedaname · 23/02/2021 14:27

@LivinLaVidaLoki They said that was one of the possibilities. I certainly hope it doesn’t become a reality.

Infrastructure:

This is more recent in the same:

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 23/02/2021 16:16

The infrastructure is already partly there for flu vaccines, so it’s massive, but not outrageously so. I would think some of the vaccines at least will be supplied in easier to use presentations eventually.

MRex · 23/02/2021 16:19

Imperial were working on a powder version that could be sniffed I think, that would be great for distribution as anyone could pick it up in a pharmacy or post them and use it at home.

SeldomFollowedIt · 23/02/2021 16:31

It might not be required every year depending on how long immunity lasts. Could be every three.
Considerably less faff than what society is currently going through.

Good news for my sister as she’s loved being a vaccination nurse.
