Pregnant/breastfeeding women and the vaccine

Hey - just wondering, our any expectant mothers and those breastfeeding planning on getting the vaccine? I'm due in June and still breastfeeding my daughter. I'm thinking I'd rather wait for the moment but have felt some pressure from family and friends to just get vaccinated. What are your thoughts?

I have posted today about my own dilemma

I’ve decided to have it and have an appointment this week (group 6) bf my 8 month old.

But not sure which to have!! As drs said to me they have both ‘in stock’ so can essentially choose...

I'm going to follow government advice, which at the moment is to not get vaccinated if you're pregnant unless you're also CEV - in which case you should discuss with your gp/consultant as in this case the benefit could outweigh the risk (there might also be different advice for HCPs, I'm not sure).

If govt advice changes and says it's ok to have it then I'll take it.

Not recommended if pregnant unless a hcp, front line staff or you have an underlying condition which makes you more vulnerable, simply because not yet tested in pregnancy. I'm in the same position, but have been invited due to moderate high blood pressure and weight. They didn't realise I was pregnant and said now need permission from consultant/gp before they would vaccinate me. Need to check if consultant thinks I'm high enough risk to approve in pregnancy.

In some parts of the world they are only allowing breastfeeding mothers to get vaccinated if the child they are breastfeeding is over 6 months old.

I’m due in June and intending to breastfeed. I want to get the vaccine ASAP as still hold hopes for our summer holiday abroad end August- but again this depends if countries require vaccine passport, if they’d let me in on the first vaccine only or if the 12 week gap between doses might get reduced by then!

SacreBleeeurgh · 22/02/2021 16:28

I am breastfeeding and will be vaccinated at the earliest possible opportunity!

I'm breastfeeding a toddler, so I'll get vaccinated. If I were pregnant then I'd probably wait until a couple of weeks post birth.

JustFrigginNameChange · 22/02/2021 16:31

I breastfeed and have had my vaccine. My daughter had green poos for a couple of weeks after, but she also had her meningitis jab the day before I had my covid one so I can't say for sure what caused it. Otherwise she was and is still fine.

JessicaPeach · 22/02/2021 18:47

I'm breastfeeding and had the vaccine 3w pp. no problems.

Buttercupcup · 22/02/2021 18:51

I’m breastfeeding my 6 month old and had the vaccine 3 weeks ago. I’m due back at work in April as a nurse so had it through occupational health who provided a leaflet about having it while breastfeeding which I’m sure will be available online I think it was RCOG.

MRex · 22/02/2021 18:54

@JustFrigginNameChange - did you take any probiotics? DS's poo went a startling green when I took some.

EgonSpengler2020 · 22/02/2021 18:57

I'm breastfeeding a toddler and I'm a paramedic. It came up in discussion in a&e recently (staff generally enquiring on if everyone had had their second vaccines yet). The staff in the room (doctors and nurses) were in agreement to wait until finishing breastfeeding as no evidence available to say either way if it is safe or not.

Obviously if I had risk factors that made me more vulnerable the decision might be different on balance, and I'm also keeping an eye on the data for new variants in case that changes the balance of risk/benefit to me.

The guidance, in regards to breastfeeding, is to access risk/benefit of the vaccine at an individual level, not in relation to the wider population benefits or benefit of service users for example in the case of hcp and social carers.

I'm also due in June and breastfeeding my older child. I will get the vaccine as soon as it is offered (which I don't expect will be until after the birth)

User0ne · 22/02/2021 19:17

Dc3 is due any day now, I'll be ebf as I did with the other 2. I'll absolutely be having the vaccine as soon as I'm offered it.

I was offered it through work and decided not to as although it's unlikely to cause problems in unborn babies no one knows for sure yet.

midnight90 · 22/02/2021 19:27

I'm trying for a baby later in the year (September time) and I'm worried about having the vaccine and then getting pregnant and not having the second one. I actually want the vaccine but don't want to put my plans on hold. But looks like I'll have to.
I'm confused about the whole thing tbh. I'm probably one of the ones who is at the VERY bottom of this list of when you get the invite so it maybe some time till I get mine who knows 😞

Sunshinegirl82 · 22/02/2021 19:36

I'm breastfeeding my toddler and will have the vaccine as soon as I'm offered it. I have to say that in my experience not all doctors and nurses are particularly knowledgeable about breastfeeding and I've found places like The Breastfeeding Network to often be a better source of information.
